Anyone else notice how awesome the drums are for that show? Wow!

I'm a huge Matt Cameron fan, but I think Abbruzzese is better.

Please dont crush me :D

Thats very true. Maybe its just the fact that I'm hearing the drums played a different way. But it seems like there's more going on, and the snare sounds different than Cameron's

Matt is pretty boring to my ears; give me a Dave A. show any day.

Matt's a great drummer, but Dave's got this great feel about him that's amazing. Even watching the MTV acoustic set blows me away

The first time i watched the MTV unplugged show my respect doubled for him. In my opinion he's PJ's best. No offence Matty
  • Dave A. for sure. His sound was so much fuller, and his intensity was incredible. I would say Matt is a better technical drummer as far musicianship goes.

They are both pretty technical. Dave has amazing cymbal work. The Orpheum show is a good example.

Dave played with great style, a bit of funk, and a LOT of contrast. Going from very tight hi-hat and slowly loosening it, then exploding. He also timed his cymbal hits to the guitar changes. Drums were perfectly intertwined with the guitars / Guitars were perfectly intertwined with the drums. It was very symbiotic.

Listen to Evenflow... a song we all know well. Listen to Dave play it and listen to how it is played by any other drummer. You could do this comparison for pretty much every song Dave played. There's a big difference to be noticed.

Depends on the song IMO, EG I much prefer RVM with Matt. Listen to the breakdown in RVM on the Orpheum show with Dave - he just kind of plays along repeating the same little pattern over and over.

It's also a matter of taste. To me Dave's cymbal use gets a bit tiresome in a live show.
  • Orpheum boot is great. Daves drumming is in your face, but IMO immortality just doesn't sound good live with him on drums

My girlfriend and I just received the deluxe box-set, and listened to the Orpheum Theater show Saturday night on vinyl. WOW!!!!!!!! :D

Back at that time, Pearl Jam was leaps and bounds above every band out there live on stage and in the studio, even over my favorite band, Soundgarden.

Without a doubt, Pearl Jam was at their best as a unit in the early 90s ('91 to' 94) with Dave Abbruzzese behind the drum-kit. Lots of PJ fans are kidding themselves if they believe otherwise; just listen to the following shows:

    Live at the Orpheum Theater
    The Drop at the Park
    The Fox Theater

    Explosive!!!!!

When you really look at the entire history of Pearl Jam, Dave A. brought out that special edge to their sound (Neil Peart-like) more effectively than the other great PJ drummers (Cameron, Krusen, Chamberlain, and Irons.)

We loved the the Orpheum show!!!!

Totally agree, Dave A is much more a detailed oriented type of drummer; a small symbol crash hear, a bass drum there. Some of the songs, particularly Even Flow, used to be played at their proper tempos, so maybe Dave had time to do things in between the next vocal line . . .
the Daughter from this show really illustrates his knack for throwing in different beats; to me Cameron is great, but he seems to gloss over things, to me his playing is more generic; he's got a great and forceful roll that he uses many times from verse to chorus (funny back in the early 90's drummers used to be criticized for that and having a big drum kit- post punk, so-called grunge thing) . . . but I grew up with Dave A. Thats the band I fell for . . .

Dave may have been good, but there were no small cymbal crashes "here and there". They were everywhere
