Pearl jam were actually performing at MTV, when MTV still had "music" playing in their channel, unlike today!

I was 7 when this was happened, but for those who remember it, it must have been such a magical, amazing night!

From http://www.fivehorizons.com:

09/02/93 - MTV Video Music Awards: Universal Amphitheater, Universal City, CA [15m]
set: Animal, Rockin' in the Free World (w/ Neil Young)
notes: Pearl Jam wins four awards (out of five nominations) this night, including Video of the Year for 'Jeremy.' Ed says that without music, he might have ended up like Jeremy in the video (shooting himself). He jokes that the MTV's spaceman award "... looks like Bono." Neil Young's appearance is unannounced. Nearly every music artist interviewed after this awards show noted 'RitFW' as the highlight of this night

Saw them open for Neil at the Gorge 3 days after this. Eddie called someone out on stage and said not to be embarassed. "I was on the MTV Music Awards, Now that's fucking embarassing" was his quote. Theat was the show the Gorge fences came down and all hell broke loose. Good times...Good times.

My friend taped it and I watched it later. Great performance. I wish Mtv still played music, but I guess that'll never happen again.

That was before I was a fan... I had 'Ten'... but, didn't listen to it too much. I was a 'Nirvana' guy.
I remember MTV playing that broadcast almost every other hour every day for weeks.
    ...
I became a fan a couple of months later... in Indio, CA.

I know... I wanted to hear 'Evenflow' or 'Alive'. 'Rockin' In The Free World' was a treat... being a Neil Young fan and all.

I love how Mike smashes it at the end.

I can also remember being 13 and being impressed by Ed singing harmony.

I remember watching that performance on the MTV Video Music Awards, it was amazing. We were really spoiled back then with good music, and great performances. I remember laying on my bedroom floor watching that Pearl Jam's performance, I absolutely loved Rockin in the Free World with Neil Young.

15 Years ago, September 1993 I was starting the First Week of my Senior Year of High School. That was a f#ckin crazy year, I still wonder how I got through all the stuff I went through.

I was 18 and up at San Jose State for my freshman year. I remember watching the show in my neighbor's dorm room. I had just been to Universal City Walk (where the VMAs were) a month earlier with friends before I went up to SJSU, where Pearl Jam actually performed in late October that year. I had Ten on cassette, but I wasn't really into Pearl Jam until 1994 rolled around. If I had only tried, I could've seen Pearl Jam at SJSU, but I got to the box office a little late. A few dormmates actually went to that concert.
