Not that anybody obviously cares what our little "alternative" paper here in Cincinnati, City Beat, has to say but...

Uke Gotta Be Kidding

Some artists are so beloved they could release an album of songs performed on ukulele and fans would still buy the shit out of it. That’s not hyperbole — Eddie Vedder is putting the theory to the test with the upcoming release of Ukulele Songs, a collection of originals and covers performed by Vedder on — you guessed it — a ukulele. Not to be outdone, Creed singer Scott Stapp rushed out an announcement for his upcoming solo effort, Cheap Plastic Recorder Songs.

Did they really have to throw a Scott Stapp joke in there? Are people still comparing these 2 bands to each other?

To be honest, I'm not all that thrilled about a Uke album either. I mean I'm sure some of the songs will be lovely, but let's face it, there is only so much sound you can get out of a uke, how different could the songs be?
Don't come closer or I'll have to go
  • opinions are like buttholes...everybody's got one. Anyone who writes about music or movies for a free paper is a d-bag. I wrote for those type of publications for years and I'm a huge douche.

Gotta admit, they've kind of got a point. It might well be a good album but its not going to be his best work now is it?

I'm sure if Scott Stapp released an album full of uke songs we'd slate it to hell but because its Ed no-one can dare say a bad word......

The idea of a uke album is kinda funny, and definitely provides fodder for jokes. It's certainly not for everyone.

That said, I'm personally excited for it. The single sounds great to me.

Now, if Ed puts out "Accordion Songs" or Mr. Gossard releases "Stone vs. Oboe", I might not be so excited.

I expect some people to talk trash about the album. My best friend who loves PJ says there is no way in hell he'll be buying it, it's just not his thing. Which is fine... to each their own. It just makes me sad that somebody got paid to make that Creed joke at the end.

do not underestimate how much sound you can make with a ukulele. i know it's only got 2 octaves, but then there's this-

Everybody has an opinion. The ukelele isn't the most dynamic instrument but there will be string accompaniment and probably keys on some of the tracks. Should sound good regardless of the ukelele being the lead instrument. If Ed wants to put out an album of uke songs, it's his choice. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

As far as the critic from Cinci, yeah he's probably a d-bag.
  • oh f whatever.

the bitchfork crowd is the most closed minded group of music listeners. they don't do their research, so they don't know that Eddie has been using a Uke for over 10 years on/at Pearl Jam (and non-Pearl Jam) albums/shows.

this angers me, not just as a Pearl Jam fan, but a fan of music.

That's funny, and pretty spot on! I think the truth of the "fans would still buy the shit out of it" part is what is bothering some of you.

    uhhh ... what the cuss?

who the cuss cares if he releases an album of him doing songs using his armpits!?? ... it'll be judged by everyone on its own merit ... heck ... zamfir must've sold 100,000 albums at least ...

i understand it's not everyone's cup of tea but why the need to shit on it?

I prefer "Can't Keep" with the uke, so I am 100% pro this album.

this is about the reaction i expected from the general public... a uke album from a punk rock guy honestly does read as a joke to anyone that doesn't know any PJ songs but the hits... don't take it personally

if the album compares to songs like "goodbye" and "soon forget" it should hopefully silence the haters

i'm looking forward to something mellow to fall asleep to or have a glass (bottle) of wine

  • Two Thoughts:

    1) If you're not interested, then don't buy it. Nobody is forcing you.
2)What he laments about EV and other artists that do similar things, I personally love. The fact that EV is doing this is not just a sign of success it is a sign of freedom to do what he wants to do. It's art, let them do what they will. For everybody it will be a hit or a miss. The best artists explore different styles throughout their career. The Beatles' Rubber Soul is different than Srgt Peppers. Ben Harper's Welcome to the Cruel World is a lot different than Lifeline. That's music, live with it!

Personally I am all for the album. And what type of reviewer reports negatively on an album he/she has yet to hear?

bottom line is some people get it, some people don't. i love the ukulele, and ed is one of my favorite musicians, so of course i am psyched for the new album. but, deserved or not, uke has a reputation as a bit of an underdog instrument, lesser than a guitar, but greater than, say, a kazoo. reputation aside, the soul in the sound of the instrument is astounding - it's so happy and a bit melancholy at the same time. if you can hear it, you get it. if you don't, maybe keep listening and you will.
ed seems to love playing his, and i think he plays quite well.

I am looking forward to the album but I can also see why some people don't think it will be the best thing since sliced bread. That said 'Can't Keep' is amazing with or without uke and I'm liking 'Your True' and 'Longing To Belong'

I wonder what if in '92 someone said to Ed "20 years down the line you'll be releasing an album full of uke songs" what his thoughts would have been :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

I agree. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I think it will sound beautiful if it sounds like previous Uke songs he's come out with. I know some people say they wouldn't see Ed's solos because they are not PJ and I couldn't agree more. I think I get something different from listening to PJ than I do listening to Ed by himself. There is a different vibe, PJ makes me feel one way and Ed's solo music makes me feel another. There's plenty of room for both. :D
