Yeah, I almost felt bad for The Who having to go on after them. Especially Roger, how is he supposed to compete with Ed's bone-chilling screams? I expected a lot from the guys, I know they take these tribute concerts for their idols very seriously (remember Masters of War from that Dylan tribute concert?). But that was just amazing. It's great that they've been playing LROM on tour for more than a year now, really ironed out any kinks.

I thought the Foo Fighters were the only other band who even approach PJ. Grohl's voice was definitely in bad shape (I wonder if he originally intended to sing Bargain, and they brought in the Supergrass guy at the last minute due to his voice problems). Bargain still rocked even if the guy messed up most of the lyrics in the verses. Their drummer is a fucking maniac.

absolutely loved those performances. I speak nothing of love for Love, Reign, O'er Me, but please people, let's not forget a little performance called MTV Unplugged. I fucking despise MTV now, but talk about a band seizing the moment and delivering spot on performance. Fuck the Alive, Evenflow, Jeremy, and Oceans videos, what really brought it all together was the unplugged performance. Done with rented equipment.

That was one of the best performances for sure. Real Me was absolutely bad ass. I couldn't figure out the audience though. I'm not a hugely outgoing screaming crazy man, but damn I think I've seen more energy out of a drawer full of socks than I did from the people that were in the audience. I don't know, maybe it's just the way the camera picked them up.

You are right. Damn that was killer.
They really just make most other bands look ameteur. I think that's why they had PJ go last of all the bands paying tribute. So other artists can watch and say "school is in session." Though I really enjoyed the Foo's. It was funny when Pete T thanked every band but Incubus.
Really,...the entire show was great. My favorite mtv/vh1 show in yearsssss

Btw.....McCready rocked those songs like I've never seen before. Rocked in every sense of the word.

I think this is a defining moment in the bands history. For the simple fact that they can still deliver this type of performance 17 years into their career and still blow every other band off the stage. It's unprecidented and aside from the band that they were paying tribute to last night...I can't think of any other band that has maintained and in Pearl Jam's case surpassed that level of performance this late into their career.

I've seen Pearl Jam many times (as I'm sure we all have) and I can honestly say that I've never seen a better vocal performance from Eddie Vedder than the performance of "Love Reign O'er Me". The man hit every note...and even a long time Who fan like myself can admitt that he may actually sing this song better than Roger ever could (bold statement...I know). But You've got to remember The Who scrapped this song from their live set for a long time and during Roger's prime (early to mid 70's) because of technical problems with the Quadrophenia tape loops and such, so their really isn't many instances where Who fans got to see Roger belt this out live in his prime like Eddie. The 1996 Quadrophenia tour was awesome and Roger delivered inspired performances but nothing like the Studio track or Eddie's treatment of the song.

Keep in mind that's just one fans opinion and it might not be shared by others and that's cool.

    Regardless....

It's one thing to cover The Who. But to tackle songs like "Love Reign O'er Me" and "The Real Me" is no small feat; especially with Roger and Pete in attendence. I give Pearl Jam a hell of alot of credit and respect for not only covering these songs, but also delivering a performance that is up their with the best performances of both songs by even The Who themselves.

Pearl Jam showed the world (or at least the VH1 demographic) why they should be considered as one of the all time greatest live bands.

That, my friends, is what committing to a song (or two songs, in this case,) looks like.

    I cried...of course.

I felt like I was watching my own children (I don't have any but I imagine this is what it would be like) at like a ballet recital or something....I felt exposed having all those people watch "my boys". I was actually nervous when they took the stage...I had to move from the couch to the floor cuz sitting still was not an option.

Then when they began, they were flawless, and amazing, and I was so proud!

Every time they do one of these shows -- I saw it when they opened for U2 in Hawaii also -- people start turning their heads and saying "Oh my god. Pearl Jam sounded great!"

They are heavily respected by their peers and "elders." When Roger Daltrey was thanking the other bands at the live show, he had a hard time remembering all the names. He was like "and to Pearl Jam...The Foo Fighters... to all of them..." They edited it out because he was emphasizing Pearl Jam and didn't mention all of them by name.

Anyway, it blows me away to think how big this band could be if they hadn't taken several steps back around 1994 and 1995. I'm glad they did though. We'd have another U2 on our hands. But we know.
