How to get someone into Pearl Jam

Hello fellow Jammers,
I need your advice.

So my boyfriend of over a year is very opposite of me. We have very little in common except we both love the ocean.

One major thing that we did/do not agree on is music-- he loves country music, I have learned to like it and tried hard to overcome my dislike of country, and found it is no so bad.

In turn, I hoped he would embrace my music as well, no dice, we watched touring fans and did not like it at all other than the few songs he already knows (betterman, daughter). But the more harder songs he can't stand.
I want him to like it at least a little so he can enjoy a show in the future.
Any suggestions?

I've given up on trying. If they like it they like it, if they don't I couldn't care less.

I find taking the unenlightened to a show being the best thing..it's great seeing them leave with their eyes wide and their heads blown away :)
..or making a carefully constructed mix cd in the mean time :)
  • Pretty tough to sustain a relationship for a long period of time without a few things in common. My wife doesn't like PJ, but we have many other things in common. My wife likes country and I will never enjoy it.

I'm pretty sure Willie, Hank, A lot of Uncle Neil, Cash and Waylon could be added to that list.

Yup...I remember when I got my wife to leave the country (music, that is). I started her with new Floyd (Division Bell), and knew she liked a Zep tune or two so played her more mellow stuff from them. Sprinkled in some mellow Pearl Jam, then eventually popped in Metallica S&M...she really appreciated the strings, and tolerated the rock. Gradually I'd introduce more up-tempo and harder stuff, to the point now she loves the Rearview Mirror Greatest Hits discs. Says some days she's feeling like the "upside" and other days it's a "downside" day.

Moral: don't rely solely on PJ music to get your point across. If he likes Betterman and Daughter, throw in some Jack Johnson and other accoustic stuff on shuffle for a while. Go slow and enjoy the ride!

i've found that taste in music is pretty fixed in people... and the changes that do happen, happen organically... at least when you're being sincere (not counting the bands everyone "likes" in high school)

don't push too hard... maybe if PJ is the soundtrack to some fond memories in your relationship then eventually he'll come around... making him watch DVDs and go to shows though is not the way to do it... I can only imagine if someone tried to do the same with me and nickleback

and if it's really a point of contention then find someone new... music is honestly a big enough part of my life to be a dealbreaker... hopefully you're not stubborn enough to feel the same :)

I like that thank you! He like some other songs that I made him a mix cd from-

Well he made me watch a Jimmy Buffet dvd, so i was returning the favor lol. and he agreed a long time ago to go to a show, I just want him to know some of the music to enjoy it. He knows it is such a big part of my life so he is trying, I just wish he would like my music a bit more (not just pj) he like detests anything that is not slow.

You could always make him a mix of some of their best/most accessible stuff. Get him to give it a legitimate chance. If he doesn't like it then there is not much you can do.

I'd probably burn him a mix along these lines:

    1. Corduroy
    2. Given to Fly
    3. In My Tree
    4. I Got ID
    5. In Hiding
    6. Nothing As It Seems
    7. Even Flow
    8. Light Years
    9. Unthought Known
    10. Small Town
    11. Immortality
    12. Black
    13. Wasted Reprise
    14. Do the Evolution
    15. Porch
    16. Alive
    17. Yellow Ledbetter

If he can't bring himself to like a mix like that, then i'd suggest you give up trying to convert him and just dump his ass!

My wife was never a baseball fan...she hasn't totally embraced it, but she does tolerate it. She is fine with going to a few games every season. I am happy with that.

There is always a middle ground. He may not become a huge fan, but hopefully he will be happy to go to shows with you...it isn't as if you are asking him to change religions, or become a vegan.

I would say make him a mix tape of some softer/acoustic material from each album. Then ease him into the harder stuff, with a greatest hits comp.

But if he's not convinced that PJ is the greatest band from watching their live performances, then he might be too far gone.

Most country music fans are in a different world as far as (good) music is concerned, their brains are wired from birth to enjoy a lesser form of music and entertainment. I would give him a few more days and if it doesn't take, get rid of him and start fresh!

Personally I think the type of music a person listens to says a lot about their character and value as a person and I don't think too highly of Country music fans!

Since he likes country more than PJ (gulp) :) i would make him a cd with some of PJ's 'country' style songs. He loves the ocean though so that should help, let's throw on some of Pj's 'surf' style songs too.

    Oceans
    Soon Forget
    Big Wave
    Drifting
    Off He Goes
    Daughter
    Amongst the Waves
    Betterman
    Thumbing My Way
    Given to Fly
    Walking the Cow
    Small Town (Acoustic)
    Wishlist
    I Won't Back Down
    25 Minutes to Go
    Crazy Mary

Maybe he would enjoy watching the Iconoclasts episode with Eddie Vedder and Laird Hamilton. Talks a lot about how the ocean and surfing influence Ed and the bands music.

I like that idea a lot, I played him crazy mary once and he liked it because it told a story and country music does that.
