Florida Lawmaker Wants Teachers to Grade Parents

My mom spends hours upon hours creating her own worksheets, she goes to a coffee shop every morning before class for 2 or 3 hours to work on prep for her class ... she's so dedicated. :shock:redrock wrote:haffajappa wrote:
thats true too!redrock wrote:There are as many 'bad' or 'less than average' teachers as there are parents. As Jeanwah said, it's a two-way thing.
I have seen way too many teachers go into teaching for the wrong reasons (long holidays, etc.). That's what they see, thinking it will be a doddle once the first year is done (then you have all your lessons plans ready - though often they 'inherit' them from other teachers). Teaching, like nursing, is a vocation - not 'just' a job.
Needless to say lazy teachers were not tolerated throughout my brother and I's education.live pearl jam is best pearl jam0 -
I was wondering if anyone would see my point (thanks redrock
)
As a parent, I was pretty unhappy when, at my daughter's parent-teacher conference, her 2nd grade homeroom teacher tells me, amid all of the other teachers / therapists there (my daughter is special ed. mainstreamed with PT, OT and Speech therapy) that she doesn't really do much with my daughter and pretty much dismissed me, even though this woman teaches my daughter social studies and science. So I just want to bring to light that parents are not the only problem. Bad teachers are also the problem. How do I communicate with a teacher when she/he refuses to communicate with me?0 -
Whilste there are a number of committed teachers (haffajappa's mom, for example), there are just as many that are poor teachers. I've worked in schools for a good number of years (anywhere from SEN learning assistant, to teaching French to Office Manager) and it was a huge eye opener and I viewed all my daughter's teachers with a very critical eye...Jeanwah wrote:I was wondering if anyone would see my point (thanks redrock

You're right, there are many teachers out there that are fantastic. I think because the general concensus think that parents are mostly to blame, teachers who are not performing up to par isn't as obvious.0 -
What is the appeal to become a teacher these days?
Pay? Dealing with parents? Dealing with the bureaucracy of the school and the school system? Trying to tell students how important an education is while their students only care about Facebook and Jersey Shore?
Teachers should be paid double what they are, and they should be held to higher standards and held accountable for the performance of their students.
Our education system is failing and we do nothing about it except for point fingers while we should be looking in the mirror.0 -

As I said, teaching should be viewed as a vocation, like nursing, social care, etc. Not as a job with lots of vacation. A lot of student teachers/new teachers really don't know what hits them once they get in the classroom. Maybe it's a reflection on teacher training? I believe their expectations should be better managed and realistic. Naturally, each school, each class, each age group is different. Being a good teacher is difficult but can be very fulfilling.0 -
Summers off I think is a big draw.whygohome wrote:What is the appeal to become a teacher these days?

Also it seems like the easy back up plan if you don't know what you want to do in university (like me, its my back up plan... but I also have a part time teaching job to get thru university, so i do enjoy it)
I think this can be detrimental though, I certainly hear a lot of people who do it because they don't know what else to do... And I obviously can't blame them ... but if they ARE going to do it, they should at elast do the job right!live pearl jam is best pearl jam0 -

Education should be taken away from the government. The only people we should try to get even with...
...are those who've helped us.

I don't disagree, but what are you advocating? State Departments of Education?0
