Florida Lawmaker Wants Teachers to Grade Parents
The grading system is based on three criteria that Stargel wrote in the legislation:

• A child should be at school on time, prepared to learn after a good night's sleep, and have eaten a meal.

• A child should have the homework done and prepared for examinations.

• There should be regular communication between the parent and teacher.

Is this a good idea or not? Now that I now live in Florida this is a passing grade I might have to deal with.

It's a good idea especially with the amount of useless parents out there. But I see 2 problems with it.

1- What happens if a parent is always getting bad grades?

    and

2- The parents who get bad grades most likely don't care about their childs education so they won't care and won't change.

I think it is a good idea for Teacher's job security. Teachers, especially in public schools seem to be unfairly treated since its their job to be the teacher/parent/cop/student social services/etc. yet they are not allowed to make any decisions or disipline anybody. So think grading will have a benifit the teacher.

Its also a sad sad realization that there are parents out there who don't want the best for their children and couldn't care less about their education/health/shelter. Sadly, grading these parents will do absolutely nothing. At my wifes school parents don't even show up for parent teach conferences to go over the progression of their child. Its doubtful they will even open up a letter addressed to them from the school. These parents don't even give their kids a bath or buy them school supplies, what make them think that once they start grading the parents that things will change???

yeah, point #2 is why it's a pointless idea.

The law makers are the ones who need to be graded, and not just every 4 years at the polls.

I like this idea... it's implement is probably more to do with not blaming teachers for kids with parents who don't give a crap, but on the other hand it does hold parents responsible which is something our society has drastically lost touch with. Shame should be used in many more ways to help "catch up" the uncaring, especially for normal things like school and basic ideals we hold in society.
    CONservative governMENt

Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a law-breaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. - Louis Brandeis

In theory it might hold them responsible, but in reality it doesn't because there are no consequences.

Students in the school where my wife teaches can call her a bitch to her face and nothing will happen as a result. The parents don't care. In fact, they just somehow make it sound like the teacher's fault tothe administartion so they don't have to do anything. There is zero accountability on their end. My wife had to talk me out of tracking down a home address just last week. Seriously...

It is so sad that we've come to this point. Some people just shouldnt fucking breed.

Seriously though.. regular communication between teacher and parent seems like a good idea, but i'm not sure how much extra time teachers will have for this if it really takes hold.

I like the idea of it too... I agree some parents can be pretty neglecting.
The going to bed at a decent time is a really good point as well... Lots of people let their kids go to bed at like midnight, 1 am sort of thing and no wonder the thing can't function or is cranky as hell

If this is to be a law, than they should make laws specifying that teachers MUST continue their education towards being a GOOD teacher, they should have to follow up with parents' communication, and they should take responsibility in really teaching our children, rather than just 'sliding' students by.

This can equally go BOTH WAYS, as I've encountered bad teachers who slide by with high pay because teachers' unions allow them tenure, which allows bad teachers to keep their jobs forever, and inevitably fail our children.

Most of my friends who teach at the middle school or high school levels say parents are the problem. How did this happen?

Sometimes some parent/parents will go to all lengths and still they end up getting punished. I know this kind of thing happens quite a bit especially when you want your child to enter a particular school for it's science and technology department etc. I considered moving to the district for such a high school for my daughter but changed my mind and entered her in a pre-med academy high school in Florida.

Mom jailed for enrolling kids in wrong school district

Take a look at what her child was facing in her district compared to the one she tampered with. I don't blame in a way, at least she was trying to get the oppurtunity for her child.
An Ohio mother is in jail after being convicted of tampering with records to enroll her children in a better school district.

Kelley Williams-Bolar, 40, of Akron, illegally registered her two daughters at her father's address in suburban Copley Township to get them into the Copley-Fairlawn school district rather than the urban Akron district, a jury decided.

The Akron City school district met only four of 26 standards on the latest Ohio Department of Education Report Card and had a 76% graduation rate. Copley-Fairlawn City Schools met 26 of 26 standards and had a 97.5% graduation rate.

Summit County Common Pleas Judge Patricia Cosgrove sentenced Williams-Bolar last week to five years in prison, but suspended all but 10 days. Williams-Bolar also must serve 80 hours of community service and will be on probation for three years.

The Rev. Lorenzo Glenn of Macedonia Baptist Church had asked the judge for leniency, saying he had known Williams-Bolar for more than 20 years, the Akron Beacon Journal newspaper reported.

"This is a serious matter," Glenn said, according to the paper, "but by all means, it was done to help her children."

Williams-Bolar told CNN affiliate WEWS-TV that she and her children considered her father's house one of their homes.

She had 12 police reports that her house had been broken in, so what am I supposed to do? Just leave them there?" Williams said to WJW-TV. "I mean, I can protect them better if they was with me."

Williams-Bolar, a single mother, works as a teacher's aide at a high school in Akron and is just 12 credits away from earning a teaching degree at the University of Akron, according to the Beacon Journal.

Her felony conviction will bar her from being licensed to teach in Ohio.

"My primary residence was both places. I stayed at both places," she said in an interview at the Summit County Jail.

Williams-Bolar's father, Edward Williams, told CNN affiliate WJW-TV that the children did live with him, so he believed the family was within the law.

He said his daughter's Akron neighborhood – where she lives in government-subsidized housing – isn't safe.

    This just sucks. :(

There are as many 'bad' or 'less than average' teachers as there are parents. As Jeanwah said, it's a two-way thing.

I have seen way too many teachers go into teaching for the wrong reasons (long holidays, etc.). That's what they see, thinking it will be a doddle once the first year is done (then you have all your lessons plans ready - though often they 'inherit' them from other teachers). Teaching, like nursing, is a vocation - not 'just' a job.
