Project #6 - Light Becomes Stars: Binaural Live

Shit, just come back from an intense headphone trip of Version 2. Intense, quite upsetting. Great music though.
I was going to say I didn't think the Rival worked well. Which one have we gone back to? Is Katowice the one from the rough draft?
You may not get too much sense out of me for a while, but it has been a pleasure to work with everybody on this, and I don't see how we could have made it better. We followed the same formula we did for other collections, and it worked really well. It's just quite upsetting reflecting on those times and hearing music with deep significance. I think we have done a very good job, but this project was never going to be 'easy listening'.
I will surf the forum for a bit now and try and cheer myself up a bit I think!Cancel my subscription to the Ressurection

Oddly enough, it's I got you that got me. Probably because I least expected this one to and now it's somehow linked to Breakerfal. I'm actually glad it stayed where it was on the track list and we didn't end with it.0 -

All I can say is that having listened to the latest version a number of times, in a number of different moods and frames of mind - I would say that there is some very substantial music and emotion in there - and I'm not sure we can improve on it, nor need to.
So it has my thumbs up!
I have got a hell of a lot from listening to all this music this week. Sad, tragic, inspiring, cathartic, angry, emotional, rocking, poignant - Pearl Jam!!Cancel my subscription to the Ressurection

That's the version that was added to the tracklist before it was changed to Prague's.
The final choice of this particular Light Years has been thought through, to fit with the overall mood of the compilation.
Discussion about this song earlier on in this thread :tremors wrote:Am listening right through to the working tracklist. It's very good, but I am not entirely satisfied with the current version of Light Years as it fits with the overall piece- for reasons that it would be hard for me to explain right now.tremors wrote:Before breakfast I have listened to the project so far, and when I got to Light Years I went on a bit of a detour and listened to a range of different versions from the Euro boots. I have found two alternative versions, both of which I find work better for me in the spirit of this collection when placed within it - and wanted to know your thoughts. They are quite different performances I would say - a 'strong' one, and a 'softer' one.
The strong one is Katowice, with a bit of talking before, which we might or might not include. Clear and powerful vocals.
The second, which I do prefer, and it gives me goosebumps listening back, is Prague - a softer quite mournful tone, which I also think fits with the tone of our Nothing as it seems, and made me reflect more on the theme of our collection, a beautifully subtle and moving performance.
Both of these I think work better than our current version of Light Years, which although it is a great and moving version sounds to me quite specific and 'personal', and has some extra lines added to the song, whereas the two versions I have highlighted here are very moving without any additions or extras which take the song into different places.
So I my personal preference from the ones I have listened to this morning would be Prague, but I would also think Katowice would work well for our collection, now that I have been able to listen to the larger piece. What do you think?myra wrote:The funny thing about this song is that, according to the show, it is totally different in mood and atmosphere. You've got 'rock-ish' light years, 'energetic' light years, even 'laid back' light years and 'softer', more intimate light years, like Prague's and Lisbon's. Katowice 2's is rather intense, all the opposite from Paris', where, as often, there's a slight lack of commitment.
This being said, I do agree that Prague's Light years works best and has the right mood for that compilation.tremors wrote:mocik wrote:tremors wrote:Also, are people happy with the Prague Light Years? That is an important one to have right, and I feel will be better if we are in accord with that decision.
I've listened to this version many times since you suggested it and I think it's great for this.
I agree that it is beautiful in its own way, without any additions.
That's great to know, thanks, especially since I think it was you who suggested the original one we had wasn't it? It's hard making decisions about this song, for many reasons. Out of the 7 or 8 versions I listened to I preferred Prague because it was quite soft, and clear, yet also quite intense, with a flawless vocal from Ed in lots of ways.0 -

Yep, Prague is good :myra wrote:I'm quite happy with the Manchester one we've got now.
I find Prague and Oslo maybe slightly more uplifting. For some reason, I find the London one even less cheerful.
But we try to avoid having the same show represented twice when we can and we had Light Years from Prague already, hence Oslo instead of Prague.
Quite hard to make choices sometimes .... those two versions you picked for Light Years and Timeless Melody were great indeed!
Hope you'll enjoy it anyway ...0 -

Light Becomes Stars: Binaural Live
http://dp-rearviewmirror.blogspot.com/2 ... aural.html
Looking at the Binaural tour of 2000, we wanted to do something in honour of the victims and survivors of the Roskilde tragedy. It was a difficult project to work on, not always easy listening or easy decisions to take, but working on this compilation was probably the most fulfilling project to date. We had excellent input, choices and contributions from a wide range of board members, and a constructive and supportive atmosphere to work in.
We had chosen to draw as much as possible from the European shows in 2000 and the official Euro bootlegs, and for the most part we used a different show for each song. We rounded off the collection following the format which has worked for other projects, taking some of the memorable covers and improvs from that part of the tour. The only exception was Parting Ways, which was not played in Europe, which we took from the last show of the 2000 tour in Seattle.
We hope you enjoy this collection. It can be quite demanding to listen to in places, but we are pleased with the job we have done, and the way forum members contributed so much, and I think we all agree that whilst there were many other song selections which could have been made from this part of the tour, the collection we have ended up with contains some truly outstanding music, and a lot of emotion. With love and peace to Pearl Jam fans everywhere.
