oh okay. No the Parting Ways we have is beautiful, love it.
I was on pearljambootlegs.org and was listening to a Parting Ways that was apparently from a 1996 soundcheck? sounded great, don't know if it was actually in 1996 because I've seen errors in the dates and set lists before.
anyway back to the subject
Listening to some God's Dices right now
Both Poland and Cardiff have rough starts, especially Cardiff. Ed mixes up the first and second verses in the Poland version, forgets a bit of the third at the end. But there's more passion and commitment in that one than Cardiff I think.
London was more tighter in terms of the band and ed himself, there was passion. I liked it a lot.
Paris was good. I liked it, the start was good. Not as much drive in the vocals in some parts.
Germany - Liked this one a lot. Feels a bit more fast paced than the others.Last verse and chorus is killer. Love the ending.
Italy - I love this one because normally Ed's been mixing the second and third verses on all the others. On this one he gets it right, but then he must've thought he sung it wrong because we get a nice switch between verses and then a switch again. Love it. This one also has a more aggressive, stronger ending.
Austria - Like this one a lot too. Lyrics though mixed up are sung great, one of the few versions And the band sounds on point. Loved it by itself, will have to listen to it after Breakerfall to see if I like it better now.
Ahhh!
Thank you for that.
I'm sick of listening to God's dice, even though that's one of my favorite from this album.
I totally agree with what you stated. And that's how I ended up picking Salzburg. :? So, where do we go from here ?
I would go for either Germany or Salzburg.
Paris is alright. Ed gets the lyrics right (even though the verses are switched as usual - i don't know why he didn't just record them that way, since he seems so used to switching them ) But towards the end, it doesn't hold up to the Germany / Salzburg/ Italy IMO
they have much more aggressive, stronger endings. which would fit with Evacuation nicely since that starts off so strong.
So for me it's either Germany/Italy/Salzburg.
Oups, hadn't seen this post. Let me listen to Rock im Park again.

I have an unrelated "Parting Ways" story for all of you:
I fell in love with this song in Philadelphia. I got to hear Pearl Jam soundcheck this song at the Spectrum. It was amazing to hear it coming out beyond the open doors of the Spectrum the afternoon of the Philly 3 show. I just remember closing my eyes and listening to this song. It was a neat experience. I have had a huge love for this song ever since.
Thought that I would share that.

That sounds nice!! I can't remember if I actually heard it (foggy), but I think Pearl Jam soundchecked the La's 'There She Goes' before the London 2000 show, but then must have decided to go with Timeless Melody. However much I love Timeless Melody, I get goosebumps thinking about how well There She Goes would have gone down in London that night - everyone in Britain loves and knows that song (and it is probably one of the most perfect songs recorded imho) - the place would have been in pieces had they played that. .... sigh

Now that would be cool to hear PJ play. I was listening to the La's earlier today, cool band.

I got a PM from an occasional poster yesterday - I don't know if they intended to post into this thread, with a few suggestions for shows.
'No love for Berlin 2000 as yet, and I feel the band really hit their stride around this point of the tour and performances were really strong in Milan, Berlin and Oslo'
Thought I should pass it on.
EDIT: He / She also made some other sugeestions, but the moment has kind of passed. It's hard to know when to introduce new input

Have they, by any chance, made a suggestion about which Rival to use ?
I was thinking Stockholm, since both Stockholm and Milan are really good and we already have Milan in the mix.
Yet again, the Katowice 1 version we have now, although totally and clearly messed up, is twisted. I sort of like that. :?

No, that's what I was checking
Here's the message
'Can't work out how to reply to this post, haven't commented on any of these boards for years, but loving these mixes you're putting together.
No love for Berlin 2000 as yet, and I feel the band really hit their stride around this point of the tour and performances were really strong in Milan, Berlin and Oslo. So I'd say Of the Girl from Milan and Insignificance from Berlin.
The version of Thin air that's been selected, is it classical guitars or electric/ acoustic, because both were played across 2000 and I wonder which people would prefer!'
My brain was fried last night when I got the message, or I would have read it properly and said 'Press reply'!

Huhuh. And have you, by any chance, listened to any of those rivals to, like, decide which one we should put in the mix and if we need to change the one we've got ?
That's interesting comment on Thin Air though. I thought we were pretty much settled on the one we've got, but should we check it again ?

Yeah, both Stockholm and Milan are great, but I like Stockholm a little better.
Katowice 1 is cool as well. Maybe this version can stay? Are the lyrics that important?
Darkness comes in waves,... tell me, why invite it to stay?

I think we've got a great Thin Air from a great show (Milan) - so I personally wouldn't want to change that one.
My brain is becoming fried again - it's taken me this long to realise that you guys have *stuck* with Salzburg for God's Dice I have just gone and downloaded it again!!
RIght, coffee and cigarettes and then I will do my Rival homework, promise. I keep getting distracted!! Sorry

Well, the thing with the messed-up lyrics is that once you've noticed that they're not right, you can't help but hearing it. And that could be annoying. On the other hand, this version is ... special. So I don't know. I'd say it's a tie between orthodox rival from Stockholm, and twisted rival from Katowice 1.

I enjoyed that Rival the most I have ever enjoyed the song - and that's probably because I think it has the worst lyrics of any Pearl Jam song! eek

I've tried to be subtle or even, hum, subliminal there .... :? Geez, this makes me feel like I'm being bossy ... Or am I ?
Ok then, twisted messed up rival gets to stay I guess. It's the funniest it could possibly get anyway.

Overall the problem I am having is that I think this is by *far* the best rough draft we have had at this stage, and personally I am not sure if we need to change any of it.

We've made great progress.
We've settled on ..... Salzburg.
good stuff.
i listened to God's Dice about 20 times in a row, no kidding. Got carried away and started listening to other versions from the american 2000 tour. Love the song.
I didn't realise how much Eddie effs up the lyrics for it though love it still , but he seems to get the second and third verses always mixed up
Are we going to review Timeless Melody? I was listening to it today, wasn't familiar with it before to be honest. Really like it but I read somewhere (maybe tremors put it) that they've done it differently? I might have a listen, because there was something about it that just didn't scream last song to me. But I'll listen to it again
Rival - So it's out of Stockholm, Katowice and Milan? I'll have a listen to those now
Thin Air is perfect IMO, really really like it as it is.
Gosh, I actually love doing this Getting to listen to all these songs, love love love it
Thanks again guys
