In my case, I bought the CD because I'm supporting Jeff like I have done with every other member of the band and their solo projects, Jeff's album is really good, ask me about Bayleaf and I will tell you that they are definitely NOT my cup of tea, and I also bought that CD to support Stone.

Yep - better than Bayleaf :D! Maybe not quite "amazing," but listenable.

BTW - how sweet is that view from Jeff's studio?

  • It's not harsh nor is it a comment on the music. I actually haven't heard it yet. It's more of a comment on the state of mind/obsession of people around here.

And Mrs_Vedder78, (who is clearly not married to anyone with the last name Vedder) the comment wasn't necessarily negative. I didn't bash the music in any way shape or from. I haven't heard it. :)

I know you weren't bashing the music, but you were making the assumption that we only like it because its Jeff and in my particular case that didn't prove true, I bought it because it was Jeff but i like it because its good.
I bought the Bayleaf CD because it was Stone but I really really don't like that CD at all. you were generalizing and that's what I was going for on my post.

(and yeah I'm not married to anyone with that name, they used to call me like that in High School as I was the ONLY girl that was into Pearl Jam in my entire class as hard as that may be to believe. ) :)

OMG! that was the first thing I pointed out to my husband when I took the booklet out... that is one heck of a view!

  • I wish Jeff sang on "Doubting Thomasina." Other than that, I like the album. It's pretty solid "B" territory, especially after the second listen.

  • Relapse is creepy, I like that.

Ummm, the rest of the album.... hmmmm. Ehhh. Yea.

Expecting a bit more considering his other songwriting credits.
I'm sure it'll grow on me a bit though. :)

    Really?

Bayleaf I instantly liked... Tone not near as much.

1st listen was not very kind to my ears. I'll give a few more chances, but to say this is better than Bayleaf...wow, I don't agree there.

I also think there is wayyyyyy too much PJ koolaid going around, amazing is not an adjective I think of after the first listen..in any way except it is amazing how much I don't like it.

I will refrain from final judgment until later, I have some death magnetic to listen to for now, now that is an AMAZING album

Man I wish this cd wasn't limited edition. I was moving when it went on sale and missed out. Seems crazy to me that Jeff wouldn't want more people to own his music.
  • The first run through of "tone" didn't really do much for me, but I'm not ready to write it off just yet. Some albums need to rattle around in your head for a bit before you "get it". Many times, the albums that sink in slow are the ones that stand the test of time. We'll see.

I have to admit, personal tastes aside, I'm shocked that there are people who dig "tone" more than "bayleaf", as I think "bayleaf" is a far more listener friendly. "Bayleaf" is one of my faves, and I have never really understood how so many people could slag it. Oh well, to each their own.

Tone is a solid effort but, I like Bayleaf better.

I'd give Tone a C+ B- range. Not to say it isn't a good album but, it's certainly not great, not by my standards anyway. There's 2 or 3 VERY good songs on it. I will forever wish that Doubting Thomasina was a Pearl Jam song, or on a Pearl Jam album I should say ;-).

Same here, ITW took a few spins for me to get into it. I think sometimes after start to learn the lyrics the songs start to grow on you more. I will say that it really has nothing to do with Jeff's musical ability, or songwriting, just needs to grow on me a little.

  • I am listening to it for the first time. I cannot comment yet since I am only a few songs in. I keep reminding myself it is Jeff singing. Not used to him in that role.
I also go a pick! I think it is funny that their is some douche bag trying to sell the same pick for $130 on ebay.

I love "Life of a Salesman"

How about that death growl on "Relapse"?

I really like it. I wouldn't go as far as "amazing" or "must have" - but definately a great addition to my collection. There are several good songs on there, and now that it's in my car, my kids and I are enjoying it quite a bit. Well worth $10-20 IMHO :)

Oh - and the "Sepletura" type super low growl in song four (relapse) cracks me up everytime I hear it :) That's the one thing I really could have done without! Cause I like the rest of the song!

  • I love the words to Doubting Thomasina. I tried to write the words from listening to it, but am not sure they are right. This reminded me of the days before the internet. when I would sit with my head up to the speaker to decipher Ed's lyrics...not nearly as hard with Jeff though : ) Please correct me if I got something wrong...or if you know the mystery word in the fifth verse.

    What are you waiting for
    Your doubts there all blessed
Whats left to prove to god and the atheist
    Waking up, it surrounds me
    Still your lips are pressed

Do you really believe it exists
Try to put present before you ask
It's a new day to forget
    everything that's been said

    What am I waking for
    sleep is my only request
That record still makes the sweetest sound
    It tells me were boundless

Yet I believe it can last
    putting motion before that's cast
    Is it strange
    Am I that naive
I want to wish for relief

I finally see you at last
Putting my ______ before I ask

But, angel every day that's past
    Leave nothing, leave something unsaid

So don't shut me out dear
    The rooster crows thrice
    So don't shut me out
    I want to be here

Don't shut me out, its clear
you don't want to be here
    oh no
    Don't shut me out
    No, don't shut me out

If I knew where it was I would take you there. There's much more than this
