The Listening - Lights.. A little poppy, but the tunes themselves are good.

    sinead o connor...

i think she's really good... i once saw this live performance of hers quite a while back, with interviews of her, and in that particular performance she was singing these old Irish tunes... inlcuding this one killer song, which also features in Gangs of New York, but of which i don't know the name... lyrics go somethin like "when we got to Yankee land, they put guns into our hands... said st patty won't you go and fight for lincoln" ... rocker stuff..

annie lennox, cyndi lauper, tracy chapman and wife of ritchie blackmore of deep purple... she's done some kickass stuff with him... the cranberries too... among others

Going to second the NEKO CASE suggestion. Seriously, she's amazing.

I had a similar realization about 2 years ago that I had practically no female singers in my collection. PJ Harvey has definitely become a favorite of mine.

Amy Winehouse - Back In Black is amazing no matter how screwed up she is
Bjork - like a female Thom Yorke
Cat Power - Cat came first, but if you like Amy Winehouse check her out too.
    Fiona Apple
    Garbage
    Lamb - industrial/electronic
PORTISHEAD - another favorite of mine. all 3 albums of theirs are worth having
Sneaker Pimps - becoming X (only this album as they changed lead singers for future albums to a guy)
Theresa Andersson - new and somewhat unknown.. she is an amazingly talented loop artist.. watch

Saw her on SNL Saturday night. Didn't care for it but checked her out on iTunes last night when I was bored. She's got an interesting sound and I like her voice. I ended up downloading one of her songs and will probably download a couple more.

Out of curiousity was she live when you saw her saturday night on SNL?

Anyway I gotta go, I think I hear the jerk store calling...

Uh...I think so. She was there and performed on stage twice. I'm not sure if it's actually live, or if it's taped? If it's live it's probably at least a few seconds slow. I didn't really know what to think of her. I think she sounds better on the tracks than she does live though. Then again, not everyone sounds great on SNL, so it might not have been her fault.

    That is all you need.

Her past two albums are my favorites but they are all great.

Seriously lock this thread up until you go out and get some Neko Case.

    This.

I'm late to this thread but this pretty much sums it up.

I notice I don't have a lot of female singers on my iPod. I want to get more but I don't know what. Any suggestions? If so, what songs?

I just ran though this thread and I think I may be the only person who truly hates The Dead Weather :) .

Anyhoo, female singers- band & solo:

Beth Hart...actually Beth Muthafucking Hart. GO THERE!

Nico Vega- band w/ female lead. Powerful stuff. See Nico Vega @ The El Rey.

    The Yeah Yeah Yeahs

    Florence & the Machine

    Spinnerette

Nikka Costa- funk/rock/soul sister that can wail like a banshee

Paula Cole- from "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?" fame but there's so much more to her than that. Stunning live.

Check out the LA band (from Greece) called Barb Wire Dolls. Their EP, Punk The Fussies, is about $6 on iTunes.
