being an influence in today's music landscape doesn't mean you are relevant at all
i hate led zep with a passion
and if led zep released another greatest hits album i highly doubt it will chart #1. go look at the number of greatest hits albums the who have put out and look at how poorly they sold. shit back in 06 their first new album in 24 years only peaked at number 9 in their own damn fucking country.
I don't think The Who is as popular as Zeppelin, by a pretty fair margin. They're both obviously hugely popular, but I just don't think The Who has the stroke that Zeppelin does. Led Zeppelin could put any song from their entire catalog on a greatest hits collection. The Who put the same 20 or so on all of them. Part of that is the nature of some of their albums, part of it is they're just not as good from top to bottom. Page and Plant outcharted their newest studio album with Walking Into Clarksdale in the UK and Zep has always been more popular in the US than UK.
It's clear you're biased, so I'll just stick to facts.
20,000,000 ticket requests for 18,000 seats in 2007 (tickets were lottery only)not to mention McCartney, Grohl, ect. and all the celebs that had to be there. Seems like they are still relevant. And Dewie is right. Like when they put out When the west was won, thier whole catalog jumps up the charts. Anything they put out is gold.
You may not like them, much like Terry Collins, but they are relevant. Actually I' don't mind Terry Collins. Think he may be what they need as opposed to Manuel.

what facts have you shown other then your last part of your post. everything your saying is what if's.
Here's some facts
American music fans are to simple minded. that's why led zep are hugly popular here. The who are an acquired taste and are harder to get as say the rolling stones or the beatles or the led zep. The who were a mod singles band for most of their career. if it wasn't for kit lambert, the who woulda been a mod/blues uk bar band. Funny how it takes a guy on smack to realize the talent they had. The who release a greatest hits album what seems like every year cause it probably has to do with the record contract
Ron: I just don't feel like going out tonight

The sales numbers are facts. The Who aren't as popular no matter how you cut it.
You say they were a mod singles band for most of their career, yet they still have to put the same handful of songs on every greatest hits album.
You say Zep isn't relevant and you don't use any facts to back it up, you just say you hate them. I don't really have to back up my statements b/c it's completely stupid to say that Led Zeppelin isn't relevant and there's plenty of other people(music legends) that will back me up.
I'd like to know what the hell you think makes relevance? If not Zep, then who? It's what timeless music is about.

and again led zep out sell the who in america cause american's are to simple minded music fans. kiss is hugely popular in america and they flat out suck balls.
the who put out the same greatest hits album almost every year probably cause it's the record label doing. alota greatest hit's albums are just record contract fulfillment
being relevant to me means making music and touring and having a impact on the charts. by your accounts i guess the ramones are still relevant cause every punk band copied them or johnny cash is relevant cause every country artist copies him.
You woke up the resident Led Zeppelin fanboy, and I for once completely agree with him.
To say Led Zeppelin is irrelevant is pure ignorance. Do you know how many people cite Led Zeppelin as an influence, or how many up and coming guitarists wish they had Page's chops? Every kid that was in my high school, learning to play guitar or that was heavily into music was donning a Zeppelin shirt, or practicing Jimmy's riffs and that was only 5 years ago. As a matter of fact I am wearing my Icarus shirt right now.
Do you think Mike McCready or Dave Grohl would say Led Zeppelin are irrelevant? I think Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones coming up on stage to play a couple of songs with the Foo Fighters, shows how much they are on people's minds to this day. What about John Paul Jones playing with Dave Grohl and Josh Homme in Them Crooked Vultures? Certainly makes him relevant to me.
Led Zeppelin has nothing to prove to anybody, they don't need to tour, and flat out refuse to no matter how much money they would make. They said they were done when Bonzo died, and they for all intensive purposes have been. Excuse them for being the biggest band in the world for close to a decade and having the pride to step away from what made them ridiculously famous.

Go listen to Achilles Last Stand and tell me what about that is "simple" or even Good Times, Bad Times off of Led Zeppelin I, the first track on their first album and tell me what part of Bonzo's drumming is simple or what part of Jimmy's solo is simple
why can't both Zeppelin AND the Who be relevant together?
cause one band actually made new music and the other refuses to make new music. again having band's copy you doesn't make you relevant, it just means you were the first to do it. i guess buddy holly is relevant cause every band copies him in someway.

do you think the average music fan will get your saying, nope. that's what i mean when i say american's are simple minded music fans.

What you're implying is that Zeppelin is big in the states because they are simple, and I am asking you to identify how they are simple

cause they made straight up rock n roll that anyone can listen to and "get" right away. the average american music fan won't "get" a rock opera right away.

according to certain members of led zep, given to fly was a direct ripoff of going to california
i saw an interview with page and plant after given to fly was released as a single. the song was played for them and they were asked after listening to it if they thought it sounded like going to california. both of them kind of just said "nah, not really" and left it at that. then they showed mike and he didn't say he was heavily influenced by gtc, but he did say something along the lines of "when i wrote the music for gtf i had just listened to gtc" and he had a sly smile on his face.
I went to the mall and saw probably 10 people wearing Zeppelin 77 tour shirts. 30 years after they disbanded. Some Zeppelin song is on the air as I type this, on some rock station. And here, in this forum, people debating Zeppelin. Some of which may be born after Zep's breakup. All of the above attest to their relevance. Some don't like Zeppelin and I'm not asking people to like them. But like them or not, they are relevant and a major influence on other bands like PJ. Mike had Achilles Last Stand as one of his 10 fav solos. If there is some GTC in GTF, that's the influence. Or Audioslave's Conchise sounding a bit like Whole Lotta Love. And Zep mimicked or built upon their influences. And look at all that PJ influenced. It keeps happening and always will.
Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river
Agree, but Robert Plant looks really disturbing now and I he does circus music now, it's just sad, but I too break out a Zep record every so often and Zep will always be relevant, I just wish Plant would stop.
I think Robert is doing great, saw him with band of joy last month. Probably the best show I have witnessed this year (and I have seen 40+ shows) They even threw in some zep songs in the set (communication breakdown, rock and roll + a few more). They sounded great!
Was also fortunate enough to meet him backstage before the show.
You guys DO understand that music influences other music right? I mean...there are only so many melodies... notes...or chord progressions in the universe. GTF is no doubt (not the band) influenced by the vibe and melody of Going to California. Mike has even said as much.
Aside from that however...the chorus and the dynamics are completely different. The verse and the riff are somewhat close...but that's about it. Hey...in other breaking news...Yellow Ledbetter is a ripoff of Little Wing.
Bands have always credited other bands for influencing certain songs. FYI...Pearl Jam also "borrow" from The Bealtes...Neil Young and The Who.
"Had my eyes peeled both wide open, and I got a glimpse...of my innocense, got back my inner sence, baby got it...still got it"

easy, now. you're gonna bring out the people that will deny this vehemently, but insist that kenny wayne sheppard ripped off yellow ledbetter for one of his songs (can't remember the name of the tune, at the mo'.)

i respect the led zep greatly for what they did but for me they do nothing.
btw- i actually own how the west was won and it's probably the only led zep cd i'll ever own
