do you think the average music fan will get your saying, nope. that's what i mean when i say american's are simple minded music fans.

What you're implying is that Zeppelin is big in the states because they are simple, and I am asking you to identify how they are simple
    32 shows and counting...

why can't both Zeppelin AND the Who be relevant together?
i guess buddy holly is relevant cause every band copies him in someway.

    that's correct. It's music...no expiration dates.

cause they made straight up rock n roll that anyone can listen to and "get" right away. the average american music fan won't "get" a rock opera right away.

  • according to certain members of led zep, given to fly was a direct ripoff of going to california

i saw an interview with page and plant after given to fly was released as a single. the song was played for them and they were asked after listening to it if they thought it sounded like going to california. both of them kind of just said "nah, not really" and left it at that. then they showed mike and he didn't say he was heavily influenced by gtc, but he did say something along the lines of "when i wrote the music for gtf i had just listened to gtc" and he had a sly smile on his face.

  • I went to the mall and saw probably 10 people wearing Zeppelin 77 tour shirts. 30 years after they disbanded. Some Zeppelin song is on the air as I type this, on some rock station. And here, in this forum, people debating Zeppelin. Some of which may be born after Zep's breakup. All of the above attest to their relevance. Some don't like Zeppelin and I'm not asking people to like them. But like them or not, they are relevant and a major influence on other bands like PJ. Mike had Achilles Last Stand as one of his 10 fav solos. If there is some GTC in GTF, that's the influence. Or Audioslave's Conchise sounding a bit like Whole Lotta Love. And Zep mimicked or built upon their influences. And look at all that PJ influenced. It keeps happening and always will.

Agree, but Robert Plant looks really disturbing now and I he does circus music now, it's just sad, but I too break out a Zep record every so often and Zep will always be relevant, I just wish Plant would stop.

I think Robert is doing great, saw him with band of joy last month. Probably the best show I have witnessed this year (and I have seen 40+ shows) They even threw in some zep songs in the set (communication breakdown, rock and roll + a few more). They sounded great!

Was also fortunate enough to meet him backstage before the show.

You guys DO understand that music influences other music right? I mean...there are only so many melodies... notes...or chord progressions in the universe. GTF is no doubt (not the band) influenced by the vibe and melody of Going to California. Mike has even said as much.

Aside from that however...the chorus and the dynamics are completely different. The verse and the riff are somewhat close...but that's about it. Hey...in other breaking news...Yellow Ledbetter is a ripoff of Little Wing.

Bands have always credited other bands for influencing certain songs. FYI...Pearl Jam also "borrow" from The Bealtes...Neil Young and The Who.

easy, now. you're gonna bring out the people that will deny this vehemently, but insist that kenny wayne sheppard ripped off yellow ledbetter for one of his songs (can't remember the name of the tune, at the mo'.)
