Yeah, according to many early blues artists, Led Zep ripped off all there songs, there was even a book written about how they ripped off so much music that they had to go back and change credits in their records. It's funny for them to accuse someone of ripping them off, especially when they are no longer relevant.

I think the general thought pattern behind both songs are similar...similar to a vast majority of material out there. They didnt make up rebirth and self rejuivenation...or longing and sorrow. Its a story....That Pearl Jam tells better in my subjective mind:)

hey seriously why wouldnt Ed draw off a song like Going To California...he probably identified with it like millions of others out there....and its a great song. I for one would love to see Ed sing it.

The vast majority if not all writters and singers etc...draw from the works of others, simply even just to learn.

McCready wrote it, and even said addressed the idea that G2C influenced him when writing G2F.

Agree, but Robert Plant looks really disturbing now and I he does circus music now, it's just sad, but I too break out a Zep record every so often and Zep will always be relevant, I just wish Plant would stop.

“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”

  • I don't think it's any secret that Going To California inspired, to some degree at least, the music to Given To Fly. It's not a ripoff, but a great tribute. Listen to The Who's 'I Can See For Miles' then Breakerfall back to back and you could start the same discussion. Musicians regularly pull from their influences.

Oh, and to answer the original question, YES I would love to see the full band do a Going To California cover (just PJ, not with Plant and company).

yeah, mike mentioned in an interview i have, its prolly disc 4 or 5 of the tv appearances dvd set...where mike said that gtc directly influenced... stone says something along the lines of " great now they can use this clip in court" and than went on to say, " i have only one thing to say ... MUDDY WATERS!"
it's largely due to eddie that i liked to jump off of things as a child...
  • Plant refuses to rest on his past and refuses to be a jukebox of old hits. Can't fault him for that. Some like and dislike the direcetions he's taken, he's doing this for his own interests.

As for Going to California, HOB was great. Encore #2, PJ comes out and dedicates Given to Fly to Robert Plant. Then, as GTF fades out, Plant and his band come on stage while PJ sits there like at a campfire and Plant does Going to California. Obviously all of this is sort of tongue in cheek. So you can read into this what you want. I read that GTF was inspired by GTC and a bunch of people got upset but the two bands (Plant and PJ) really don't give a crap and are sort of laughing at all the people who are getting upset.

Following GTC, they played Little Sister(Xmas single), Money, Fool in the Rain, and Thank you. For me personally, that was a pinnacle in "music". My two favorites on stage together doing that stuff.

Listen to "Heartbreaker" on Led Zeppelin II, and then the solo in "All or none" Boston 2003, night 3. So what?!?!? I think the HOB thing, the R&R HOF performances, Neil Young, Doors, Who... All of this constitutes the old timers recognising PJ as the ones to help carry the baton of rock.
Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river

Same can be said for the Stones. They have a lot of tunes that are that way. Same as Zeppelin. They loved those old blues guys.

^^^Alot of it had to do with lyric changes. Most of the stuff that was "stolen" isn't immediately recognizable, but when paired with the lyrics it puts it over the edge.

Hendrix, Clapton, ABB and really every other rock band did similar stuff musically with old blues numbers, they just credited or disguised it better.

They're influence is immense. If they release an album(live, greatest hits, whatever) today it's gonna be sittin somewhere close to the top of the charts. Outside of the Beatles nobody touches them.

They will be relevant as long as popular music exists. To say otherwise is pretty ignorant.

None of those band you mention are Led fuckin Zeppelin.

i hate led zep with a passion

and if led zep released another greatest hits album i highly doubt it will chart #1. go look at the number of greatest hits albums the who have put out and look at how poorly they sold. shit back in 06 their first new album in 24 years only peaked at number 9 in their own damn fucking country.
