What albums helped and healed you during trying and dark times in your life?

I see art as having that effect on me and my own life, and i know im not alone. not all of us listen to music as mere background chatter, some of us muself included use it as a coping mechanism as important as any therapist or doctor or psychologist. We use the music to self medicate, to heal, to cry, to deal with emotions that we dont understand. Music has never let me down. its always been there for me. No matter how down i am, there is always a song that either will talk about how i feel and make me cry, or will do the opposite, and turn my mood around and make me happy again

Indeed. I wrote something similar about this in the art section of the forum a few weeks back - a thread titled 'Music, art & mental health'

Lots of albums have helped me a lot. These are the records I would say have helped me most in my life in this way, alongside ten, vs, vitalogy, no code, yield, riot act and backspacer !! ;)

    Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
Cast - All Change / Magic Hour
Bruce Springsteen - Darkness on the Edge of Town
    Radiohead - In Rainbows
    Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes
REM - Automatic for the People
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger, Superunknown, Down on the Upside
Neil Young - After the goldrush, Harvest
    Ian Brown - the Greatest
    Janis Joplin - Pearl
    The Duke Spirit - Neptune

There are probably quite a few more, but these are the ones that come to mind right now.

there are so many that have gotten me through bad times.

probably the most effective for me has been "baby i'm bored" by evan dando.

    a few others:
    Travis- the invisible band
    Oasis- the masterplan
u2- how to dismantle an atomic bomb
nada surf- lucky, the weight is a gift, and if i had a hi-fi
    better than ezra- friction, baby
superdrag- in the valley of dying stars
    green day- american idiot
kings of leon- because of the times, come around sundown
Sea Wolf- their first EP and their first full album
The Airborne Toxic Event- self titled
    Viet Nam- self titled
Coldplay- a rush of blood to the head, and parachutes
Rancid- the new one (forgot the title)\
bouncing souls- ghosts on the boardwalk
    juliana hatfield- gold stars
    metallica- master of puppets
bob dylan- pretty much any of his solo older acoustic stuff and blonde on blonde
templre of the dog- self titled
    The Darkness- Permission to land

man, so many albums have helped me....
notice i did not mention any pearl jam. they have gotten me through so much that it goes without saying. i would not be here on this board if that band did not mean something special to me. but with the current state of my life and the trauma i have recently experienced i have been unable to listen to pearl jam for any length of time for about 4 months now. i recently began to listen again when PJ radio went to satellite radio a couple of weeks ago. my fave boot of theirs has to be virginia beach in 2000, the first show after roskilde. the tone seems so guarded yet hopeful, which is how i get when i am in bad times. the daughter/it's ok tag and the way ed explained it literally saved my life at one point.

i will try to think of more and come back later...

Yes I too am overfamilar with Disintegration by the Cure, and Temple of the Dog! I also have had times when I can't listen to Pearl Jam. They are still with you though, even if you don't listen. A really really good album for dark times (though the guy can't sing very well) is by the English Band Embrace - debut album 'The Good Will Out' - really clear fragile, but hopeful lyrics - the kind of stuff that sinks in when nothing else can reach you.

There is a Verve line which is relevant to this thread:

Well I've never prayed, but tonight I'm on my knees
I need to hear some sounds that recognise the pain in me, yeah

I find music very theraputic for myself from my state of my mind on a given day to some physical issue I have to deal with on a long term basis(Chronic Pain). I spoke to one of my open minded Docs who told me since the Romans ruled the world medical people have long believed the connection between Music and heath & healing, so it is more than just a distraction for many I can attest.

mainly Neil Young & Crazy Horse Rust Never Sleeps & Neil Young & Crazy Horse Live Rust and Eric Clapton time Pieces & then Journeyman, as well as 38 Special not sure whay album. Thanks Uncle neil &EC :D
