It started off with just being blown away when the band first came out, the music was like nothing I had heard and it just sent me to a completely different place. Then I loved their stance and strength to stick to their principals and then the live shows kicked in...more recently I love that this band has introduced me to some fantastic friends and shown me that we truely are a community who care for each other.

    ;)
    I need a coffee!
  • Other than Phish I haven't seen or heard of a band that releases their full live shows (since 2000) & also put out their studio albums on vinyl. It's quite a unique thing to do. And I have been fortunate enough to be able see them live twice in WI playing pivotal shows in their career. And I still have the ticket stubs!

Their music helps me get through the hard times, makes the good times better and gives reason to believe that things down the road will be okay.

    Thansks!

While they not the best band on the planet, they are my favorite (just edging out Phish). Why....well it's hard to say, I've never thought of that before. Probably because of the emotion they put into every show/song, and Mike's distinctive guitar sound.
  • Ever since I heard Indifference live in 1993 I've been hooked. When you see this band live it's like nothing you've ever experienced before....even though you've seen them live before!

ALIVE (by Pearl Jam) just came on the radio again - just had to write something. They've really got me....saw them on tv the other day, too - first time I'm seeing them do a current live performance....and maybe my last til they decide I'm old enough to go to a show #@%&! I thought Nirvana was awesome but this band, they're something else. The sound - the drums, the guitar and that voice! It has all the angst, guts and in-yer-face energy I wish I could express. Their lyrics are so poetic but there's no bullshit. I think I'll leave GN'R for [my older sister] and have Pearl Jam all for me ☺ ☮

This was scribbled on a page in my high school art class sketch book. Before I left home for good 3 yrs ago, I was going thru my old things and found this. It's probably from early '92 - I was 14 & lived with my family in Wales. That year I faced a major change in my life that in retrospect affected my life in a negative way. Pearl Jam was something that held me together. The memories would be so much darker if not for the PJ soundtrack in their background. They put words in my mouth, my heart and my hands. Now that I'm 'all grown up', they're like my good old friends - the ones who know exactly what I've been thru, all my dark days and secret sufferings; the ones who care no matter what and can help me say/feel what I can't explain.

Plus, when I took my husband (who was my fiance at the time) to their show in Brisbane in 2006 - he cried at one point and left the show as if he'd been a fan all along. He's a musician and explained that he'd never seen a band exert so much energy and give their absolute all like that
if I keep holding out,.... will the light shine through?

This one is hard to explain. Their lyrics provided me with the words to explain how I was feeling when I was young and angsty and they helped me find meaning and rise above certain things. As the band has grown I feel like I've grown with them and they are still writing powerful music that is still so relevant in my life today.
  • PJ is everything to me. Can't even begin to start listing all of the reasons why! I can't imagine a world w/o them
Where she walks no flowers bloom...
  • Thanks for the great contest. To answer the question of why I like/love/listen to PJ, I thought that I would re-post something I posted last fall.

    Thank you.

I'm still coming down from the LA3 and SD shows. I keep listening to the LA3 boot and just reliving that amazing evening. The boys are so tight. The crowd at both shows were just amazing and it was great to be part of both experiences.

    I'm thankful that:

-I was able to take my wife to her first PJ show. It helps her understand my love of this band.
-My college roomate made it down for LA3. I've seen 90% of my PJ shows with him.
-I won the lottery @ LA3. 2nd row center. Get the hell out of here.... are you kidding me!
-Ed gave me his harmonica during Footsteps @LA3. I don't even know what to say. I just look at it every so often, smile and put it back with the rest of my PJ stuff. People ask me why I think that he gave it to me and I can't really give an answer. The best I can come up with, is during the song it felt like I was driving up Highway 1 in a convertible, somewhere south of Big Sur, Ed's got shotgun, 7000 of my closest friends are in the back seat, Footsteps comes on the radio and we are all signing our hearts out. That's the best I can do.
-I was able to take my neighbor to the SD show. Its been a long time since he has seen PJ and the show just blew his mind.
-I was able to see the band in an arena. There is nothing like it.
-I had a chance to sing Black with 10,000+ of my closest friends.

That's it. Just needed to get it off of my chest.

Thanks again and I can't wait until the next show.

Pearl Jam just started out as a band that I really liked in college. As life got more complicated and I had to learn to deal with things that I never though that I would, PJ became more than just a band. The music became a way to escape, a way to deal with a rough stretch in life.

The band's music has helped me deal with rough times. Their concerts have been some of the most fun nights that I have had with family and friends. It may sound cheesy, but even as an adult, the treasure hunt of hearing a new cover or original sing that I never heard before makes me feel like a little bit of a kid again.

Finally, as a fairly new member of the 10C, I am amazed at how much this band means to people. The 10C community is incredible. People are generous beyond belief - not just with sharing PJ goods, but also with supporting important causes and charities.

  • They know the words/thoughts that are in my head, but they write them in poetry and make it all seem like we are not alone in our experiences, whether painful, sorrowful or loving. Listening to them from the very beginning, I have grown up with them, with various songs resonately deeply at different crossroads in my life, and the music a pivotal bridge between myself and my spouse and my children. This band always brings their energy so full blown - we are so fortunate to feel it and know we are experiencing something genuine.

I don't mean to be all zen-like, but I kind of invented my own explanation for Pearl Jam and that is:

    PEARL JAM is PEARL JAM.

No matter what they do, what direction they go, there's never been anyone like them. Who could give us songs as different from one another as "Porch," "Present Tense," "Johnny Guitar" and "U" and have it all make sense under the same roof? There's nobody like them. They are a place of comfort for many of us.

i've never felt anything like i feel when i listen to pearl jam...especially at a live show.

i honestly don't know if there are ANY words to describe it.

it seems silly sometimes, i suppose, to feel that way about a BAND...but it's just so much more...
keep on rockin' in the free world.
  • Wow Dimitris, thank goodness there is no word limit on this! haha

PJ is everything that is good in music and the world. The love they show for each other and their fans, even still after more than 2 decades together, is mind blowing. Fighting for right and justice, shedding light on the wrongs and wrongdoers in the world, yet remaining just really nice people. But most of all, it's the music! The fucking music baby! when you heard ten for the first time it changed you, but then they just kept getting better: vs, vitalogy, yield, no code, yield: the best albums of the 90's! i never got to see them live until 2000 but after that first show, ive seen them 16 times in 9 countries and dont plan on stopping any time soon. ed's contact with the crowd, his genuine care and thanks for the people who turn up to see the guys and of course a couple bottles of wine and a double encore make pj easily the best live show there is. no flashy light shows or semi-naked dancers, just great track after great track played by a group of genius. Pearl Jam is ageless, the songs have been on repeat on my ipod for years and they dont get old. pearl jam is family. my love for ed got me to buy into the wild on dvd which i shared one evening when home with my mom. ever since she is a converted pj fan and is always listening to my pj bootlegs in the car, even though im rarely home. now we have this common love in our lives that makes us infintely closer. PJ started my love of vinyl records which was maybe one of the happiest times in both my father and father-in-laws lives. now we meet up to go record shopping a couple times a month. Aside from the music, of which there is no equal, the best part of pearl jam is the fans. Ive been fortunate enough to travel with fans around europe twice and see a number of shows in different cities in the states. PJ fans are literally the shit. i cant imagine travelling around a continent id never been to before with strangers ... unless they were pj fans and we were going to pj shows. 2006 & 2010 ... best times of my life thanks to you people. Jam on my friends, jam on!
Keep on Jammin' in the Free World!

    It's all about the music
  • I saw PJ for the first time after they exploded at Sunfest 1993. It was nuts. I honestly somewhat took it for granted, as I didn't think it would be a full 10 years (minus 2 months) until the next time I saw them live (and I'm not the bravest soul when it comes to mosh pits). The next time was in Fargo 2003. One of the few shows where Ed sang Arc. Like someone else said earlier, when he started singing it, it was almost like a religious experience, I welled up with tears. It was just ONE OF THOSE MOMENTS in your life that you won't ever forget. My wife saw my tears, and squeezed my hand as we listened to that angelic voice...........and then they exploded into Go and then DTE. The whole experience was unlike anything I had experienced before or since at any show. The flood of emotion I have felt with this band's music over the previous 12 years was overwhelming, like a rebirth of sorts. I could feel it through my entire body. I was so spent after the show emotionally and physically I could not go out with friends and celebrate. I had to stay in my hotel room.

This band exhausts me. In an after-really-good-sex kinda way.

There is nothing like Pearl Jam. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

  • Pearl Jam was the first band that I heard that said something that spoke to me. I was enthralled and I couldn't stop listening. Since then I've literally grown with the band. The music has always remarkably been the exact thing I needed to hear. The new albums always seem to speak to my life at that time. I listen to Pearl Jam because they express in music what is in me. I listen because I have to listen.
