Probably because he thinks he 'knows everything' or, because he sensed you were a 'well to do' kinda guy, and figured taking the long route will get him some extra $$$.

I haven't been sick, really sick, in years. But the two times I was really sick in the past 15 years it was pretty bad. (Once was norwalk virus and the other was influenza.)
