So, he is among the most hated and maligned artists in recent memory, yet a ton of buzz bands and influential bands right now like Sleigh Bells, and Neon Indian have expressed admiration at Phil's work.
I gotta say, ive always been a fan of In the Air Tonight, and the genesis song No Son Of Mine is pretty devasting.
Anyone a fan?

I don't know a whole lot of his catalog, but he has some great songs. Never really ever heard of people hating on phil collins. On this board maybe, but as far I know he is pretty well admired in the music industry and he is in the hall of fame with Genesis. I think he permanately retired though due to hearing loss. I think his hearing was bad enough to where he had to get hearing aids and he chose to retire after all the damage playing music did to his hearing.
some of my faves:
wish it would rain down
another day in paradise
I can't dance ( with Genesis)
I don't care anymore
Man on the corner
Against all odds
Brilliant songs in my opinion.PJ: 10/14/00 06/09/03 10/4/09 11/15/13 11/16/13 10/08/14

By whom, and what is their reasoning?0 -
He "retired" because he had major back surgery and it was suggested that he is no longer able to play the drums. He is now onto singing "oldies" which is unfortunate. I think he is an extremely talented drummer, writer and singer. Have listened to him for years and am a fan of Genesis as well.
I don't think he is hated by the music community. I would have to think the opposite. He hasn't ever done anything to warrant disrespect, and had a really long career that sold out stadiums... He has had success on broadway and written various songs for children movies.
Just because it isn't Pearl Jam's kind of music, doesn't make it bad. Just different.
I like him. "I knew all the rules, but the rules did not know me. Guaranteed."

south park has made fun of him, and as crazy as it sounds, south park really has alot of pull and power and oddly is usually finds the pulse of an issue.
additionally, phil collins himself has stated he views his work, or thinks people view his work as a joke. thats his own statement.0 -
additionally, how many friends do you have who say "i love phil collins stuff, and the genesis stuff"? How many bands other than the ones i listed, have said their sound is inspired by phil collins.
he;s influential no doubt, but thats what i mean when i say maligned.
in the air tonight isnt talked about in terms of its greatness. its talked about in terms of the em shoutout on stan, and is linked to the 1980's. people hate the 1980's.0 -
I'm sorry, I think 'In The Air Tonight' is one of the most overrated songs ever written. It doesn't go anywhere.Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V0

Just because he hasn't inspired anyone that you know of, doesn't mean he isn't any good. It's a different genre of music. I have many friends who like Phil Collins and Genesis. I have one who is an incredible drummer and grew up playing Phil Collins and Genesis. Don't judge him on "In the Air Tonight" and Genesis on "I Can't Dance". You should know by being a Pearl Jam fan that the best stuff are the ones that doesn't go mainstream on the radio.
And by the way, I love 80"s music...

I'm a PC fan and I love Genesis. His music hasn't been a major factor of late due to my changing musical tastes. In the 80's and early 90's I was all seeing him and Genesis Live I did however skip Genesis's last tour in that was all about the $$$.
Say didn't Phill Collins win an Academy Award for song he wrote for some movie.

I like Phil Collins. I play his greatest hits CD a lot. Then again I loved 80s music. I think the backlash against Phil Collins and even Genesis for that matter, stems mostly from the fact that they evolved from a well-respected prog rock band in the 70s to a radio-friendly pop band and then Phil as a solo artist of the 80s. A lot of people dismiss 80s music as fluff and without substance but as a child of the 80s, I sure as hell like it better than most of the crap that passes for pop music today.0

Phil Collins as a singer is okay, but anyone who knows anything about rock and roll knows he was a very good drummer, he not only played with Genesis, but as a session musician Brand X, Brian Eno, John Cale, Robert Fripp, he is/was a very good drummer.[img][/img]9/5/92, 11/20/93, 3/14,15/94, 9/16/95, 10/14,15/2000

The first solo album of Phil's is quite good. I own it, plus a bunch of Phil (and Peter) era Genesis."You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Alright, South Park's is the opinion of a bunch of comedy writers who may not like where his career has gone in terms of say, the covers album (they also seem to have the same problem with Rod Stewart). I personally moved away from his music when it became 90% ballad and Disney songs, but his '80's output was great and that includes Genesis' Invisible Touch. The '80s WERE pop music and has been the butt of the joke for a long time, but that's what a lot of people listened to and still do whether they admit it or not.musicismylife78 wrote:additionally, how many friends do you have who say "i love phil collins stuff, and the genesis stuff"? I have never had a friend or heard anyone say "I hate Phil Collins" and the fact that In The Air Tonight is referenced in a rap song and still used in movies and advertising nearly 30 years later should be enough to speak of it's greatness.
Phil Collins also stated in regard to their (Genesis') poor reviews over the years that they must be doing something right because they still sell.0 -
