wtf is up with his board? I've been posting here f some time now and I, must have been blind, I never noticed all of the racism/discrimination/idiocy!

sooo much talk about united palace and the neighborhood and will I get killed?

I think I'm just surprised that many can hear great music and lyrics and yet not listen.

How many of the people showing concerns of Washington Heights are saying "oh no! Domincans and Blacks! I'm going to die! Fuck the show!" and not, "I heard the area is bad. Is it an ok place to see a show?" It's a legit question. Always know your environment before going somewhere. They are just asking.

Just as bad as racism sometimes is constant usage of the race card.

Some people don't know the area asked a simple question. A simple response (as seen in dozens of threads over the past month) would suffice. The title of your thread is pretty harsh.

Sometimes perception equals reality and sometimes reality equals perception ... set them straight in a nice 10C way.

Seriously. I've lived in NYC for 28 years. It's a big city with the attendant crime issues. Some neighborhoods are safer than others. Washington Heights has become much safer over the past two decades, but it still has plenty of crime issues.

From the NY Times in 2004:
"Robberies and other crimes in the 33rd and 34th Precincts, which cover Inwood and Washington Heights, have risen over the last year as they have mostly fallen citywide. For example, in the 34th Precinct, which covers the upper tip of Manhattan, robberies are up 14 percent for the year, though they have fallen 8.2 percent throughout the city, according to police statistics.

Burglaries in that precinct have risen 19.8 percent this year, while they have fallen 8.3 percent across the city. But Mr. Kelly said that some important arrests had recently been made in the area, which he thought would improve the situation.

Unlike the situation in other parts of the city, where the local questions tend to center on narrow issues like overdevelopment (Staten Island) or a preponderance of pornography shops (Greenwich Village), crime is by far the most dominant issue that community groups in Upper Manhattan are concerned with, particularly after a young woman was found murdered in Inwood Hill Park. "We have been working over the past several weeks over the numerous public safety issues," Pamela Palanque North, the vice chairwoman of Community Board 12, said in an interview yesterday. "And the response from the mayor and the police commissioner last night showed almost a little bit of a disconnect."

These statistics from 2005 highlight the improvements made in the area, but still show that a disproportionate number of violent crimes in NYC occur in Upper Manhattan:
    http://nymag.com/news/articles/reasonstoloveny/2006/25624/

I don't think this was ever intended to be a referendum on Washington Heights, race or socio-economic issues. I think a number of people who are not familiar with the area were simply asking for information about their safety. Engaging them respectfully instead of browbeating them for having the audacity to ask about crime in an inner city neighborhood seems to be a more prudent and reasonable response.
Rise. Life is in motion. I'm stuck in line.

    hmm

    maybe

When I went to the chi shows in the middle of nowhere I didn't have those questions or concerns, and it really is in the middle of nowhere.

It is concerning that so many have the same narrow thinking about new places.

title is harsh? I don't think it is, I think it offers an opportunity for discussion.

Tomorrow's show is going to be GREAT. I went to LA1 at the Wiltern Theater and the Palace seems to be a similar venue with similar features including recent renovations. The recent artists who have played there will no doubt increase it's popularity. And it's so much more convenient to us NJ types (please don't start stereotying us, haha). I'm not any of the things you typed in your Title line so it's not fair to type it in the first place.

It's Sunday night at midnight on the day before I"M GOING TO SEE ED AGAIN ... and you write "Racism, Discrimination, Idiocy" .... I'll mail you on Tuesday with my review of the show ... assuming my car isn't stolen or I'm not shot. Is that the reaction you were digging for. Actually what was the purpose of your post in the first place ? You're dealing with a W-Heights transplant so be careful.

I don't think you'd call it arguing. I think it's me explaining that I know little about the area due to my infrequency of visiting the area, which has nothing to do with preconceived ideas.
