Alright, I'm about to leave for another week in the glorious backcountry of Jellystone. Would anyone like a souvenir, possibly a bison patty, bear claw, human toe? Oh, I can get you a toe, trust me.

Best time of the year. Backcountry is deserted... well, except for the bears trying to add those critical pounds before hibernation. I'm jealous of your trip though, never really been down there. For some reason, I need bears, wolves, and lions around me.

yah ... maybe some cougars in the north party of zion but aside from that - there'll be now wildlife wrestling down there ... you can do backcountry trips in grand canyon but those other parks are pretty much all day hikes ...
and yeah ... best time of year to goto yellowstone ... should see lots of elk as well ...
But dont kill one, just if you happen onto a pair.
What about Boo Boo? Hasn't he been pissing people off right here in the pit? Comin' for you, Boo Boo!

Those things are so cool. Amazing how much bigger the boys are. Had a lady come visit us in our camp on the last trip to Yellowstone. She was very curious and sat in the rocks right above us, like 50 feet away, and watched us forever. There is a cool photo of her on my facebook dealy.

That was an animatronic bison. And you were at Bugaboo Creek.
mmmmmmm....bear claw
D-Man, those aren’t bison. Remind me to not let you be my wilderness guide. Here’s a bison… with a comb over.

I suspect the wife might not appreciate that. I am assuming she will be the one attacked as I can run a lot faster than her.

The first one is a hood ornament from a Dodge Ram, right?
And the second one is a partly-grown Chia Pet Cow?
wasn't that one of the bands stone and jeff were in back in the day?
At least Jeff from his Montana days.
1 hour and counting. You bears better start hiding!

Hahaha, bears are like children that way. Can't tell you how many times I have heard something while hiking and then turned around to find a griz right behind me on the trail doing exactly that. I'm always like, "I can still see you."

15 years ago today our little family was trucking around Yellowstone...
Flew from SLC in a tiny airplane a 13 seater, Daddy and the kids were scared
Stayed in a cool hotel with carved wooden bears, as big as the kids, and a hot tub.
Saw the beautiful Grand Tetons. I watched the sun rise as it
light the snow covered mountains from our cabin front porch.
Alone, sipping coffee, while Daddy took the little ones to look for deer.
Peaceful.
Ran into a Mother Moose, she was pissed, we skedaddled.
Saw Old Faithful and spent the night at the Inn, gorgeous history.
Saw many Buffalo but the first one was a huge surprise!
Had fun on the Stagecoach Adventure and Old West Cookout on JB's 40th b-day
the whole place sang him happy birthday!
Saw a herd of deer on someones front lawn in a small town!
Got lost in the woods, scary, worried about the bears but never saw any.
Had some good pizza at a little bar and played games and the jukebox
Stayed at the Yellowstone Lodge & Cabins on the lake. More beautiful history.
Smelled JB's cigar early one morning as we ventured further on down the road.... happy.
It was one of the best weeks of my life.
Safe travels Eyed, I envy you.
I hope you get some more stories to put up. And, maybe some pictures?
Have fun!
So, we walked southwest from Old Faithful all the way back to a Ranger Station in Eastern Idaho. Went 1-0-1 with my wildlife wrestling; the black bear ran off, the crafty rogue bison didn’t. Soaked in some of the most wondrous, unbelievable hot springs. If I hadn’t seen them with my own two eyes, I wouldn’t believe them possible. One was situated right at the base of a roaring waterfall; I felt like I was with the Goonies on some adventure. Standing up was like being on the bow of a ship during an intense storm with the howling wind and freezing mist and then you sit down into a crystal clear 105 degree pool looking almost straight up into the raging maelstrom of waterfall .
The other one was even crazier. Imagine a big, natural stream side pool, but on the bottom of this neck deep pool, right in the center, is a fissure in the earth leading down into the very depths of hell. From this chasm, superheated water bubbles up into the pool. You can stand right next to it the crack before it starts to get too hot and you can feel the earth shaking at your feet. And the one downstream from there was even better!
It’s a whole notha’ world in those geothermic basins. I half expected a dinosaur to walk by.
Justam, I hope to have pictures to share soon. Although I have to find ones where my wife has some clothes on. She tends to run around like a wild Indian princess out in the woods.

The one I vaguely mentioned, that is just downstream from the big pool (Mr. Bubbles) is exactly like that, except it seems most people don't even think it would be possible. It is in the middle of the stream right below a huge geothermic flow boiling out of this impossibly blue bubbling pool and it is a smaller pocket just big enough for two, but like you mentioned, there is one super hot flow flowing around one side of this boulder in the stream and a cold flow on the other. If you sit in the eddy, it is perfect, but move to either side and you will cook or freeze.

I "almost" made it up to Idaho Falls last weekend... my daughter was the varsity setter for her high school volleyball team at the big Bonneville/Hillcrest tourney. Her first BIG step. She is a sophomore and was pulled up because the senior setter had family matters to attend to.
I would have met you there for a signed copy of your book, but things just didnt align.
Up to Jackson Hole this weekend.
i think it was called the boiling river ...
anyhoo - how were the colours? ... i took this picture when i was there in 2003 in the tetons ...
Nice shot. The "colors" (you people with your extra "U's" ) were incredible. That Boiling River spot isn't a backcountry spot is it? Seems like I've seen that scene from the road, but maybe not. The last two days also featured some incredible views of the distant Tetons.
You should have been there when the bison snuck up on us. Christ almighty, he almost got hit with the bear spray. You wouldn't think an animal that big could pull a ninja move, but they can.
