Is PJ live better than The Mars Volta live??

I just came from The Mars Volta show and it was fucking amazing!! I've been a loyal Pearl Jam fan all of my life. I've seen them front row even a few times because I've been a fan club member since I was 12. Anyhow, I was deep in the crowd for TMV, but it was so intense it didn't matter. I kinda think that TMV is a better live band but feel like even suggesting an idea is heresy. Any of you seen TMV live? What do you think?

theyre different types of bands so its hard to compare. i can see people arguing that the guys in TMV have more talent but i think PJ puts on a better show. great setlists and interaction with the crowd put them ahead.

  • Well that doesn't count. If you saw them live I think you would be a fan....unless you're def. J/K :P

Anyone who has at least seen TMV live have an opinion?

ive seen TMV 3 times and they are fantastic. but songs can drag on for a while and PJ has more charisma onstage.

  • SVRD, I appreciate your open-minded and candid opinion. For the rest of you, I love PJ and all but do we really have to flat out say they are the best on album and live??!! That's a little ridiculous. They fucking rock, no doubt......but lets keep our ears open.

Saw Mars Volta Open for RHCP a couple Years ago....I really liked their albums before I saw the show so I was pretty excited about it. In all honesty...I didnt really care for TMV show. I would rather listen to the album. It just gets to be a bit much for me live. The are great musicians, and no doubt really good at what they do. But I'd take Pearl Jam any day of the week over TMV. Just my opinion though.

Please do! They are pretty progressive, so its kinda impossible to like them right off the bat, but listen to Amputechture or Bedlam a few times in a row and I challenge you to remove the disc from your CD player. I was a naysayer when they came out with Deloused for a while.....but now don't know how I managed without it.

I guess it wouldn't hurt to re-listen to them again. After all, I'm huge Mike Patton fan and Mr. Bungle was experimental/post-rock.

  • It's just different man. It's just not possible to say if either one is better or worse, it's just two different bands, two different styles of music. Nothing has to be better, it's just different.

Come on, isn't that a little too much to say?? I'm curious to hear your 2nd best studio and/or live band EVER.

Please don't get me wrong, PJ is my favorite band, but I think a blanket and highly subjective statement is a little much.

My second favorite bands usually change through the years.
For awhile Alice in Chains were my second favorite in the 90's.
Then Soul Coughing became a huge favorite in 2000(after they broke up already)

Then, fell in love with Faith No More around '05...(also disbanded about 7 years earlier)

Currently, my favorite band behind PJ is Radiohead!!! :D hopefully I'll see them in August

I've seen the Mars Volta 2x in the past year, I agree with what someone said before how they are "a bit much". They are GREAT live, just as PJ is GREAT live, but the difference between the two is that by the end of a Mars Volta show, I'm pretty ready for it to be over.

Anyone reading this, even if you don't like progressive stuff, PLEASE give the new Mars Volta album "The Bedlam in Goliath" a try...the whole album is one of the most cohesive, solid efforts I've heard in years. Tracks 1-5 must be played continuously, I'll leave it at that.

And another thing, pertaining to who was talking about the overall "blanket statement"...am I the only one who feels like I'm at church in these forums sometimes? You know how if you go to some churches and they're all like "our belief is the only and best belief, and anyone who believes anything else is wrong."

Same with some PJ fans. It's like OF COURSE they're the best LIVE band and OF COURSE they're the best STUDIO band and anyone who thinks otherwise is CRAZY. Well...
