That song was improv in 1996 Cascais, last night was the second time they "played" it. It was the biggest tribute the band could give us. I was there in Cascais nad again last night. It's this kind of things that PJ is the best band in the world!

It was the THIRD time...this song was also played in 2006 :D

So it's been over a week now, and I'm still at a loss for words about how great this show was to me. Let me begin at the beginning:

Arrived at the venue at around 4 pm, went to the only merch stand there was, which was pretty crowded already, but got the blue "drop" t-shirt anyway, which I think is pretty cool. Gomez were great (I missed most of their show in Berlin last year when they were opening for PJ and didn't know any of their stuff, but will definitely try to get into them a little more). After that, Dropkick Murphys' gig was a complete mess (I go to shows to enjoy the music and to rock out, not to beat people up, but to each their own I guess...), so I went to buy a beer and watch some of the live street art competition that was going on, which was interesting as well. Gogol Bordello were OK, although a bit repetitive, but I ended up in a decent spot roughly 20 rows back and a bit to the side, with a good enough view to the stage.

And then finally, at 11:10 pm, the intro music went on and the whole place went bonkers.

Release - I've never cared about the song too much, but hearing it open a show - this show - has earned it a spot in my Olymp forever. Never would have thought one single song could so immediately in the trance that I was in for the next 2 hours - just magic. I now think it should open each and every PJ show until the end of time. :) So as I said, I was into it right from the start.

Small Town - unusual this early in the set, but the crowd was really into it, singing at the top of their lungs (and, after 2 songs, my voice was ruined  ).

Animal - at last, the first rocker, I did my best to rock out a bit, but there was really no space to move or jump, so singing (despite the fucked up vocal chords) and fist pumping had to do.

Given to Fly - a staple, and rightfully so - crowd again was into it and very intense.

And then, my dream came true:

In Hiding - one of my 2 favorite PJ songs (for the second one, see below), and I was lucky enough to hear it at my 3rd show. Now my vocal chords are beyond rescue, and I'm probably the happiest motherfucker on earth. Crowd didn't seem to appreciate it as much as I did (less participation), but fuck 'em. After this, they could have played Bugs for 2 hours straight and it still would have been one of the best nights ever.

Unthought Known - my fav off Backspacer and top 5 on my overall list, and they follow In Hiding with this? The smile on my face now extended behind my ears.

Nothingman - I'm speechless. Sure, a quiet setlist (good thing though, the crowd was really packed so it was sensible of them to try to go easy on us), but the songs that they played, damn it!

Daughter - another crowd favorite apparently, good response on the Blitzkrieg Bop tag.

Even Flow - nothing much to say here except: Mike McFuckingCready is the man!

Just Breathe - another fav of mine off Backspacer and one that they played at every show this tour, so nothing unexpected here.

Wishlist - time to unwrap my vocal chords again, another one that I hadn't heard before, very nice.

Black - although I didn't meet the Greek freak, I knew he was a very happy man at that moment. Amazing song, and again great crowd interaction on the "doo doo doo" part.

Why Go - one of my fav rockers, so good choice to end the first set (although I would have preferred Porch, which I still haven't seen live - but I'm not gonna complain).

1st encore - the improv was really funny with Stone holding the lyric sheet and got the crowd (even more) fired up; PIL was decent enough though definitely not one of their best covers; Fixer was great as always; Wasted Reprise into Better Man (which was as amazing as usual) was a great choice.

Early in the show, after In Hiding, I was thinking "if they play the other one of my 2 favorite songs tonight, I'll go nuts", and then at the beginning of the 2nd encore, Ed says "this is not something we usually do, with Stone and Jeff switching instruments" (or something along those lines), and from that moment on I couldn't do anything else than repeatedly yell "Smile!!!" - people around me looked at me kinda funny, but I didn't give a shit. So:

Smile - a.k.a. the other one of my 2 favorites. And smile I did, big time, for the rest of the evening. :)

Once - another rocker, but after Smile I barely heard it...

Alive - crowd were singing it during the encore breaks, so it was pretty obvious that it would be played - great atmosphere on this one.

Yellow Ledbetter - the closer to all my PJ shows so far, and the feelings are always the same - a mixture of utter amazement at what has been witnessed and sadness that it's over.

In all, one of the best nights of my life that I will definitely never forget. Very, very hard to choose which one was better between this one and Berlin 2009 - but those 2 songs might just provide the edge to this one.

Anyways, thanks you PJ for a fabulous show, and I hope your announcement of it being the last for a while is not to be taken too seriously... :?

I'm not a surfer, but next time I make a 3-pointer I'll say: "This one's for Eddie."

    Rock on!

was a great gig, bit "short" unfortunately, but I guess it would be short even if they played five days in a row

  • Just a question that probably fits here. I went to see PJ in Noblesville Indiana. When they played Daughter, they said it rolled into Blitzkrieg Bop but I didn't hear it and I have the Bootleg and don't hear it. Is it that subtle (was it that subtle in Portugal) or did they simply not do it?

We came from Sweden to this festival and had an awesome time...if you saw the swedish flag to the right of the stage, that what us, and now the flag is hanging at O'Neill's pub in Cascais ;-)

I saw the pic of the crowd posted earlier and it was amazing...does anyone know where I can find more pictures from this evening?

The crowd was amazing, Pearl Jam even more and as I know listen to the bootleg I dream my way back to that magic evening...beautiful.

But I have to say that there might have been one person or two too many in that small area. Sometimes it got scary on the way from the show because of the HUGE amount of ppl walking away from the show. I'm glad nothing terrible happened again. Does anyone know how many ppl who actually were there?
