Ants Marching and Crash are probably there 2 biggest hits. Night one they played ants marching.........night 2 was crash. Thats the only time the crowd was alive.

    Scott

Were you there for Two Step the 2nd night? Agreed the energy in the place overall both nights was lacking, but did Two Step was electric!

The most electric I have seen MSG was a DMB show......yes, I have seen PJ there many times and yes, I like PJ better, but objectively speaking I have never seen the MSG jump as much as it did on 12/21/02.

There is no comparison. I was there too, night 1. Got a free ticket as well. Good show but the crowd was weird. People around us actually asked us to sit down.

Yes I was there for that. That was the 2-3 times I said the crowd was very good. Thats the song that went on for about a half hour and at the ending the crowd woke up (except for the girl behind me was still out) but yes

  • They are just different. My history w. DMB goes back to the same point as PJ. DMB treated Boulder, CO w. A ton of respect on tour... Thus numerous small shows at the Fox Theater, Red Rocks, etc. As they blew up, the fan base continued to get younger and younger. Good for them, but you can definitely feel it at a show. It's like News Years Eve every time I go see them now... In a bad way. Too many rookies out there ruining an event for the rest.

That being said, just saw DMB in Camden after being dumped a ticket an hour before the show. I had set the bar low enough that I actually had a very good time. But I did take notice how many fans were indifferent toward the show. Highlights were dancing nannies --> warehouse... Was sweet. At the end of the day, the live performance is not even close to what u will see at a pj show.

Anyway, I will say this. They have as many "nerdy" fans as PJ who obsess about set lists, openers, tags, etc. I was kind of chuckling during the show as two "super fans" were discussing intros to some obscure track I have never heard of... I found it creepy. In the same way that many of the threads on this board are. Excluding this one of course!

    Just saying!

    2013- Brooklyn2, Philly1, Philly2, NOLA
  • ...I used to be a HUGE DMB fan. Mainly from '94 to 2000. I stopped listening to them after "before these crowded streets". I felt like I heard every song they would ever make. They started to all sound the same to me(much like Jack Johnson has become).

However, their new album is awesome. It's much more Rock N Roll. More aggressive.

In terms of the live experience, in terms of musicianship, both are awesome. I am a huge Matt fan, but Carter blows him away. Carter Beauford might be the greatest drummer in the history of the world. Maybe not the influence that a John Bohnam or a Keith Moon...but in terms of just drumming...no one holds a candle.

I do agree...the DMB live show is very much a high school/college crowd.

I love both bands, but it's two completely different atmospheres live. One of my friends, who I went to both Citi Field DMB and MSG PJ shows said it best: DMB can come out both nights and give you a 7. If PJ gives you a 7 the first night, you're gonna get a 13 on night 2.

    Two other things I noticed.
    1) PJ has way more songs where the crowd takes over. Why Go, Betterman, Small Town, etc. The only songs I noticed where the crowd took over from DMB was Jimi Thing and #41, which the crowd totally effed up at Citi.

    2) When DMB does their encore, I know it's only gonna be 2, maybe 3 songs and then the night is over. When PJ leaves the stage after the main set, I always say "ok, now the real show can begin" and I know there's at least one more hour of killer songs.

The two just can't compare live.

I have yet to see Pearl Jam at MSG, but I was at that 12.21.02 DMB show there and that was the most energy I've ever felt at a concert.

I've seen DMB 20+ times (only twice in the past 3 years) and I've only seen PJ once (Hartford 2010). It is tough to compare the two concert experiences seeing as they play such different music. They were two of the biggest touring acts in the 1990's, but I think that's where the comparisons end. The crowds at DMB are definitely a little younger/less mature than those at Pearl Jam, but any concert you go to there will be drunk idiots - you can't really pin that solely on DMB.

I will no doubt see more PJ shows than DMB from here on out; I was floored by that Hartford PJ show. DMB has definitely lost something since Leroi passed.
  • DMB has some fantastic players in Leroi's place, but who can possibly fill those shoes? I feel like their jazzy side is fading away every year.

agree 100%. While Jeff Coffin is probably technically the better sax player, he just doesn't fit into the DMB groove like 'Roi did. They'll never be the same.

Go see DMB at a music venue, not a stadium and then make a comparison. PJ doesnt play baseball stadiums, but if they did, you bet there would be many MANY fans that didnt know anything but the hits.

I've 'sat' 1st row for DMB and PJ this year... both are an amazing experience in their own way!
  • I've always enjoyed DMB, but I think it's one of those bands that a lot of "hip" college kids get into (for lack of a better way of putting it). Us Pearl Jam fans are awesome. I recently went to my first PJ show, after being a fan for many years. I was amazed to see how we all moved, danced, and singed along in unison in the right parts (just like a well choreographed number in a movie). Like when you're watching a movie and you think, "that would never happen," but in reality, it happens at PJ shows. It's like some weird spiritual connection between us. :D

Edit: The only band I've ever seen that comes close to putting on such an awesome show as PJ does is Foo Fighters, that was truly an awesome concert and I will go back to see them anytime they come near.
    Hearts and thoughts they fade....
    fade away...

I am at peace with my lust.....for Eddie.

Dave's Watchtower is 100000x better than PJs.

Seriously, it's almost painful to watch PJ play it after watching DMB's.

The 2008 versions were great. But Pearl Jam is playing it like Neil Young does. I saw on YouTube a clip from the VFC film and it showed them performing with Neil Young on that song.

Carter is a beast on drums for sure, but let's not get carried away...

There are about 100 drummers better; Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, just to name a few.

    agreed

i almost left msg2 08 during watchtower cause pj did it so horribly. closing with indifference made up for it.

  • Don't get me wrong, I am a big matt fan. But carter is just incredible. He can play any style and has the most amazing fills. I don't think I'm getting carried away at all.

I've been playing drums for well over 15 years now. Not that I am incredible or boasting. Just saying I have an understanding for the instrument

I agree. Just saw Fri and Sat at the Gorge this past weekend and was 100% satisfied- concerts (esp. Saturday down in the pavillion) were wicked!

Both bands are exceptional live- and different. It's my opinion that DMB are more polished in their craft and definitely cool guys with great tunes, but PJ's tunes do more for me though.

What I'll give DMB over PJ is the fact that they are accessible to their fans- they tour like no other. I hate waiting every 3-4 years before seeing PJ. With that said, I do understand why they need time away!

I've read a few posts on Carter's drumming and man, given that styles leave room for subjectivity... he is one of the best for sure. Kind of a Stewart Copeland with some beef.
