My friend was going to see Eddie last night. Since he was in Vegas, I gave him 5 Grand to gamble with. I told him I wanted it all to go on Black. Bastard! PhillyCrownOfThorns-11-2-12
I have forgotten how sad this song is. The melody conceals that, I dance a little, sing along, but when I really listen, it is heartbreaking. The saddest Pearl Jam song?
I never ever thought it sad, I adore the song. I always pictured an adult remembering, like we all do, the magic of Christmas through the eyes of a child. Fond memories, sleepless nights, anticipation, sitting on the stairs hoping to catch Santa, waiting for the sun to come up. A song about recapturing our innocence.
I love Christmastime and in my opinion this is the only true Christmas song PJ does so it gets doubly played at holiday time. It is beautiful. I wish they would do some traditional carols and put out a Christmas album.
To me the song is about a homeless person wishing an end to life so that he/she can avoid seing all the christmas spirit. Being homeless during christmas time is awful as this person is constantly reminded of all the things he/she doesnt have- a family, friends.. a home. No more lonely time than christmas time, as the person is remembering back at how much this time meant to him/her when younger.
Visualizing the image of this person in the middle of christmas joy paints a very sad picture i'd say.
There is always the story that this is a happy christmas song, but as eddie once said: 'i have never been too good at happy endings'.
A homeless person, tired and freezing, aware that there is nothing out there for them, cannot get a bit of human pity even at Christmas time. Painted against 'flowered winds' and Christmas magic the way kid sees it. Eddie writes heartbreaking lyrics.
I hail from WI homeless or otherwise we are freezing at Christmas It remains a positive song for me.
I think Eddie is quite good at happy endings now Bless his heart
