Anyone know when Mike's awesome site will be back up? I know it says "spring 2010", but it's mid-July now.

thanks

No problem. I got this from someone else that posted it a while back when they were working on the site.

  • Fantastic news. Any thoughts on how the webmaster of gtw can have the new page appear first when doing a google search?

Fantastic news. Any thoughts on how the webmaster of gtw can have the new page appear first when doing a google search?

This is the million dollar website question. If he could guarantee this, he'd be a millionaire over night.

Here is the 'geek in me' answer to that question.

Google is a very complex beast and the way it indexes and ranks sites is a closely guarded secret and it is also fine tuned regularly and also altered to stop those looking to unfairly influence its results. Many of us make a trade in 'search engine optimisation' when we develop websites. Sites are ranked differently by different search phrases. The site could easily be #1 for phrase "X" but no-where to be found for search "Y".

The popularity of your site - largely determined by the other sites that link to you and the relevance of these sites' content to the content on your site. The way and text used to create this link also plays a part as does the density of keywords and phrases in the text google finds on your site. The works in your domain subfolders are also relevant. For most websites, if you take the basic steps of SEO and have a quality site with a few other good sites linking to you, google will find the site and index is accordingly. Unless the search phrase is hugely competitive you should rank in the first couple of pages. However, for a competitive phrase like TABS, Pearl Jam, guitar tab, etc, there will be stiff competition for those high rankings.

The only way to guarantee a high spot in google is to purchase or big for the top spot for certain search phrases in the google advertising spots which can be exensive.

Ok, geek - over and out. :wtf:

Thanks so much for the detailed answer. I had to read it a few times over to get the gist of it, but it's starting to sink in. Complex stuff! I had no idea!

    Thanks again!
