Portions of a song left out live...

Dont' get me wrong...I LOVE PJ live. So those of you who are gonna jump on me and say "we should always appreciate PJ for what they give us", don't bother to reply. I am NOT COMPLAINING!!

There are some songs they play live that they omit certain aspects of the songs on the studio album. Not an entire verse or whatever, just certain "tracks" on the song and I wish they didn't do that live.

For example, on GTF, the album version has Stone playing an awesome octive lick on, I think the second verse when they kick back into the more "aggressive" part of the verse. That part adds so much to the studio version. He doesn't play that part every time live.

I also know that in the studio you have access to mutiple tracks and therefore can play more parts rather then only having access to 2-3 guitars live. But that part of the song, when not played, is a glaring ommission to me.

Are there any songs that you have noticed that that happens?

I think it happens all the time on lots of songs, for whatever reason .....they didn't have the right sound equipment to do it the way they wanted, Ed forgot the words (ahahahhahaaaa..yeah, that happens a lot, they just got jumbled up and decided to start to get it together again at a different verse, chorus, whatever. Or simply..they didn't feel like it that night. Or to just break it up a bit..you know...after all, it is a job.....the awsomest job in the world, yes, but still a job, and they've got to get good and tired of doing things the same way each and every time, right?
Personnaly, I have to say that I really enjoy hearing the different versions...and I get a kick out of a lot of the stuff they just plain old screw up on...its all part of loving to see your favorite guys live.
Enjoy it all...while you still can :)

  • i can't think of any off hand, but i can think of an add on they do...

for corduroy, the intro lick, they add a third interval live when on the studio they play just two...when they go back to the intro in the middle of the song (studio), they play the third interval...however live, it's the three interval version every time they play that lick

i prefer the live version, as i imagine most of us do...the use of the third interval allows the band to play faster which makes the song more punchy and aggressive...i love it one of my favorite live songs
  • I notice this on Whipping. The version on Vitalogy, and live versions from the 90's, has Mike (?) playing a high octave E on each beat, sort of staccato, and it sounds badass. Now they both just play the main progression live, and i think it takes a lot out of the song. Although it still is pretty badass.
    This is not for you...

they've fucked up GTF to the point i take a piss/beer break if it's played at a concert that i'm at and GTF is my fave pj song

OP summed it up pretty well as to why i hate GTF live
Ron: I just don't feel like going out tonight
    Sammi: Wanna just break up?

The mid-part of In My Tree.

With all the reverb and multiple voices and awkward chords it gives off a disoriented/discombobulated feel which doesn't translate live.

Mike never plays Neil's solo on I Got Shit. I'd love to hear the extended version of that sometime.

I remember the first leg or 2 of the 03 tour, Ed would fuck up the lyrics to Hail, Hail. He would throw the ..."it's egg rolling thick and heavy" part on the first verse and repeat it on the second. He must have threw on No Code on one of the breaks because when they came back for the last leg, it was all good again.
He who forgets will be destined to remember.

I'd like to hear the intro to 'Go'
    It's Evolution, Baby!
  • Its been many years since Ed included "the sky I scrape" line for In My Tree. That's one of the high points in that song for me.

On the sudio version they mess up the intro to Brain of J, but not live. I prefer the false start.

Well, you can't expect perfection...they have so many, bound to get confused once in a while. At least Matt didn't forget the words.

Has Ed ever sung Rearviewmirror correctly? I think I remember listening to boots from '93 and even then he always said the "Head at your feet, fool to your crown" part twice instead of the "I couldn't breathe, holdin' me down" that is part of the first verse.

It's not only rearviewmirror...he repeats a lot of the verses a second time around...OR...mixes up and sings the second verse first and then I think he realizes it later, and while trying to kind of correct it, just jumbles it up more....

I love it though, it adds that bit of reality, you know? Not overly rehearsed perfection like some bands do....and end up sounding exactly like their record....or they just generally suck...BUT NOT PJ...they keep it real, mistakes and all...and I look forward to those times....I get a giggle out of it...and sometimes Ed makes the funniest faces and gestures when he gets it wrong, and if you look at Jeff, he'll be rolling his eyes, and if Mike's not in mid-trance, he might come on over and nudge Ed a little too. Stone will just turn around, so it's hard to see whether or not he's actually reacting, or just plain turning around for a while. hehehheheeee

I actually look forward to the messing up parts.

You already know it's going to happen, so why not enjoy it, right?

After all, we're talking about this now precisely because those are the parts that we remember most 8-):D
