What happened to "Breath" at MSG 2?

Finally listened to the boot after seeing this on the setlist relayers..

Some past performances have be real gems (the MSG 2 9/11/98 one is awesome)

but it seems they butchered this years performance!!..

Like they had never practiced it in a while..

(similar to when they brought "Alone" back during the 2004 tour... took many attempts to get the original "spark" back...finally nailed it in 2006)

but this 2010 version of "Breath" Ed forgot the lyrics (again (hello? use the teleprompter for these oldies buddy OK) , weak vocals overall and Mike's solo is only seconds long..
like they wanted to get it over ASAP..

very rare that the band squanders an oldie at MSG..

I really love this song but I suggest the band revisit this in a few practice sessions before bringing it out again!

Look how good they did with "Tremor Christ" and "Push Me Pull Me" in recent shows!

I think the shortness of the solo has to do with when they played it( not being an encore, or closing the main set) like rearviewmirror is shortened sometimes

I thought it was just fine, they played so many shows of coarse u can always play arm chair qb and look back at a better one

fuck that, they butchered it musically and eddie couldn;t even remember the words. good thing they followed it up with a stellar nothingman. again... MSG 2 2010... nothin' special.

I've heard dozens of versions of Breath over the last 5-6 years that were pretty bad (that's not to say there weren't good ones).

Ed constantly forgets the lyrics to that song and the rest of the band often seem to play it like they just want to get it out of the way.

I love Breath, but I'd almost rather not hear it live if there is only a small chance they'll ever play it close to how it should be.
  • It's the same story with some of Matt's songs. I freaked when they started "Evacuation" at Philly 2 and by the end of the song I wished they hadn't bothered. "Cropduster" from Philly 3 was just as bad. It's called "rehearsal"...they should give it a try sometimes.
  • with a band that changes the setlist up as much as they do to appease the fans that bitch too much about the same old songs, I think it might be hard to rehearse 150 songs to perfection for each tour. Be happy they play oddities for their so-called fans.

Wasn't that in 05? Either way, I thought they owned it at the gorge in 05

    Wow.

Not sure i have this straight, but i'll check anyway. We have a show (the final one before a european tour, on which the band have to leave their own country and families), where on one song, they screw up. A band that have been consistently giving and giving in terms of the quality of music, the sheer variety of releases, and bonuses for members. A band that have inspired a generation of music lovers, to listen, appreciate and create, not just in terms of music, but in life itself. A band willing to say: "Yes i will work over the 4th July Holiday on another continent", again separated from loved ones. A band who choose to make available for those who want it, recordings of each live show, not afraid to present themselves "warts n' all", to fans and the general public. I have seen Pearl Jam eight times in Europe now, and was extremely fortunate to meet Mike, Ed, and Matt in Belfast, Ireland a month ago. That was my chance, not to get photos or tell them i loved them but, Ed shook my hand, and I simply thanked him for everything over the last 20 years.

But even if i had not that opportunity, I would not be griping about how one song sounded shit. Back in 2000 in Dublin, half the band played 3 bars of the first chorus of Alive and the others played 4. Total mess, and you know what? It was funny. They just cracked a smile and kept going. Mistakes happen. I think its why Chuck Berry was a pioneer of guitar distortion!!!

At the end of the day, those of you lucky enough to be at MSG 2, were treated to 34 tracks of the band, way more than most shows. To judge, listening to a CD playback of a show afterwards, is like making love to a woman, and later going over anything that wasn't 100% and criticising. Am i objective when it comes to Pearl Jam? You know what, probably not. But remember, this all aint gonna last forever.

    Peace

I agree. It shows they are human and are capable of mistakes and are there to have fun just like the fans. Why shouldn't they enjoy themselves too?

I agree with some, but not all. Totally respect your opinion.

I am not mad that they make mistakes at shows at all. I find it funny and more "real" and that helps to make the band more accessible for me. However, I do get tired of people on here defending the band as if they are absolutely perfect and are the "end all be all" for everything including life, love and religion. The above post is an example of that (IMO).

While I am sure that being on the road that often away from friends etc. would get old, but you make it sound like someone has a gun to their head forcing them to endure some sort of torturous pain. Fact is, they LOVE what they do, no matter how much fans bitch. They are living an absolute dream.

So, the original post is harsh IMO because, while a great band and great music, it's only Rock and Roll! And the above post is waaaayyy to "Beatlemania".

Concerts don't need to be perfect. The sound is never good, and it is difficult to make out lyrics. Concerts are for the moment. They always sound better live and then not as good when you get the boot. We've got too many boots.
