You're just waiting to call someone selfish or heartless if they want to think outside the box of having the government dictate and control our post-work lives. The fact is, a discussion about saving for retirement has nothing to do with how selfish one is or how much they give to help others.
I do have a solution. It's working great for me. I should have a very large retirement fund at some point in my life. Do you know what I did? I've been putting 15% of my income toward retirement since the first day I was working after I left college.
I know that we can't turn off social security for everyone like a lightswitch, but instead of raising the retirement age continually, why don't we stop social security eligibility for everyone under a certain age like 30, 35, or even 40?
I think the problem is...
What are those 40 and under probably going to do with the funds they are currently paying into the Social Security system, if they get paid directly instead?
If you said, 'Spend it', you're probably right. So... what happens to them when they don't save it (as they should) for their retirement and reach the ages of 60, 65, 70? Should we just let them live inextreme poverty til they die for being foolish? Or maybe, they should become burdens to their kids or something. ...
I agree with you... I'm in pretty good shape here as far as my personal savings and 30 years plus of a pension. But I know reality... and I know people. If given the money today... it's going to that 46 inch flat screen and the latest game console.
Should we just let them live inextreme poverty til they die for being foolish?
No, but I guess they are going to have to work to supplement what they cannot live on from the welfare their particular state gives them.that’s right! Can’t we all just get together and focus on our real enemies: monogamous gays and stem cells… - Ned Flanders
