Pearl Jam and U2 have had quite a history together over the last 5 years. In 2005, Bono joined Pearl Jam on stage in Toronto to sing Rockin' In The Free World. In Melbourne in 2006, a few guys organized a charity 'Make Poverty History' concert. Pearl Jam and U2 happened to be touring in Australia at that time and Bono and the Edge joined Pearl Jam on stage to play a monster 8 minute long version of Rockin' In The Free World a second time. Then at the end of that year, Pearl Jam opened for U2's final concert for their Vertigo Tour in Honolulu. At the end of the concert, Eddie and Mike joined U2 on stage to play Rockin' In The Free World one last time.

I was at the Honolulu show and it sounded pretty good to me.
  • I'm jealous. U2 even brought Billie Joe Armstrong out at the end.

U2 is a great band. I used to hate them for no reason then I started listening to them. If U2 and PJ toured again I would be so down. (except I would be pretty disappointed knowing PJ would be the opening band) :(

I am a U2 fan but Pearl Jam is by far my favorite band so when I got the chance to see them both, I jumped on it. There were shirts being sold in the parking lot with the slogan "Next time, U2 opens for Pearl Jam." Still disappointed I didn't pick one of those up. Only wish Pearl Jam had been able to play a full set. I had heard rumors they were, but it didn't happen.
  • I don't think that Pearl Jam opening for U2 made U2 look better. I think Pearl Jam was invited to open by U2 to kind of end the tour with a bang. But I thought they played a decent opening set.

I think your correct. U2 had cancelled a show earlier in the year and this was the make up show.

They played with U2 in Melbourne on the 17th of November 2006.

On the 18th I checked pj.com and they said U2 and Pj join forces. I turned the tv on right as the make poverty history song was being broadcast. RITFW was the first song played. I was seeing pj in Sydney that night and it got me so pumped. I recorded the song and played it over and over about 10 times, It was such a great warm up for a great night.

That nights pj concert was the best one I have been to by a long shot. It was criticised for being a bit of a 'greatest hits' night but the atmosphere was electric and everyone agreed. Get the boot :)

  • I've got the Make Poverty History concert on dvd but I had no idea that they paired up that time though.

This would have been an awesome performance if Bono and that Edge dude would have been off buying sunglasses or something instead of being where I could see them.

slower than how PJ plays it the last few years. Its actually about the right tempo if you go by Neil's version

  • i think they played it slower because adam clayton and larry mullen jr may not have played it before.

Pearl Jam, U2 and Rockin' In the Free World... is something that should never, ever, ever be repeated.

    Embarrassing for all involved.

(...except Bono who's too much in awe of himself and his questionable "talent" to ever get emabarrassed)
