Original SOLAT better

A friend and fellow PJ megafan commented how bad he thought the remixed version of State of Love and Trust sounded. I know it goes against the grain here, but I agree, that is one song from the early days I wish they'd left alone. It definitely would have sounded out of place in the newer remixed version on the Singles soundtrack. You can't improve upon perfection.

I like them both.....but if I HAD to choose....the original is better.

    I prefer the original.

I willingly listen to either version, but the original is better in my opinion.

  • Of course the original is better. The original is the official studio version. The SOLAT on the Ten reissue isn't a remixed version. Read the liner notes. It's an early demo. I like it for what it is. The drums have a distinct "garage" sound to them.

Yeah but the vocals have a distinct "echoey over-engineered ass" sound to them, IMO.

This is the version we love, and I think PJ do thier best to replicate it live. Awesome, awesome live :D

I was listening to the latest All That's Sacred podcast last night and there was a rough version of SOLAT on there that I'm pretty sure isn't the Ten reissue version (although I could be wrong - i was pretty tired and wasn't paying full attention). I'd be interested to know the origin of this version - anyone know?

+1, the Ten reissue is by far my favorite studio version.

The version with Dave is best. Tons of energy, lots of energy, a comfortable speed, and lots of dynamic and nuance on the drums.

The Redux version sounds like a practice session which just draaaags, and has boring drums.

Redux version sounds too simple, like this:

I agree there, but I was actually referring to the different studio versions.

Gotcha! ...my comments are identical for the studio version too. :D

I was under the impression that the singles version was the de facto superior version. It's quintessential punk-rocking Pearl Jam: fast and awesome. The Ten Redux version is called a demo, and is just meant to be a different version, right?

That is my understanding. They threw in a demo version as a bonus. Not really something to complain about as if this is the "new" and/or "better" version.

Are you talking about the Ten Redux version or the Rearviewmirror version? Both are vintage mixes (not remixes) and neither are as good as the Singles Soundtrack mix.

Agreed, Singles mix is the best.

I thought that the Singles version and the Rearviewmirror version were the same version of SOLAT?

Same version, different (and inferior) mix.

I was referring to the original version on Singles and the version on Rearviewmirror. I guess I didn't realize the RVM version is different yet from the Ten Redux and that both were early mix versions. I was under the impression those two were a newer mix from Brendan O'Brian. Now that I've thoroughly confused everyone including myself...

I think you all know what I was getting at though, right?

The RVM mix is the mix used in the original film. I can't imagine why they used it, considering that it is swamped in reverb, and they just spent all that time remixing the Ten songs to remove reverb! Strange. Maybe they wanted to give us something different and didn't feel like remixing it.
  • Ill have to look into the Singles soundtrack so I can listen to the "best" mix of SOLAT.

I love the song too much lol
