Not that people aren't entitled to their opinions, but I think this should be less to do with how stylistic or artistic the video is. It's the message itself that we should all concentrate on taking to heart. We have a responsibility to take care of our planet. The more we practice, the better our kids will be and future generations to come. Let's not kid around, the future is going to be challenged enough already. We need to either get or remain conscious and involved.
I watched that and thought of my 5 year old daughter and taking her out for a swim or a surf. Made me cry and I'm fine with admitting that. Thanks to PJ for the video.
exactly! Some people on this board totally miss the point.
This is not a Pearl Jam video for their own promotion. This is a song that was used to bring awareness to how vulnerable our oceans are to the idiocy of people and other enviromnental damage we do.
The people surfing and play in the water are all "yeah! we have a great ocean! I had fun in it when I was a kid and now my kids can play in it! Yipee!" and they are juxtaposed against the devastating horrendousness that is the Gulf of Mexico. That's the future for our kids. Slimy yucky oceans teeming with dead and dying wildlife.
This is not about whether that's Ed or Ed's kid, or Ed's surfboard, or Ed's beach or any crap like that.
So yeah, I guess if everyone on this board watches the video just because it's Pearl Jam, and even bitch about it being a "crappy" video, at least they watched it and on some level, one can hope that something else sunk in.
how do you bring awareness with a crappy video no one will watch with a tacked on little thing about the oil at the end?
god some of you people act like if you admit its crap you are pro oil spills or something! ridiculous.
crap video, crap song, nice statement at the end. thats all.
BP is already planning on more digging in the Gulf as well as Alaska....stop BP from doing anymore drilling. I live in Canada, but I have enjoyed the Gulf's beautiful waters. If they start drilling in Alaska, they are getting way to close for comfort. STOP BP, STOP BP, STOP BP!!!!!!
Peace...
Peace,

Simmer down. Like I said, everyone is entitled to their opinions. Read my post again...I am not here to attack anyone.
It is actually genius. It is simple on purpose, as it is reaching to everyone. Holiday footage? It is supposed to be. Who doesn't want to be on that beach themselves or with their kid? That beautiful water!
And than they show us that it can be taken away, and how volatile it is. Those three images just creep in.
They make me angry and sad, even if I saw them for weeks now.
This video is, again, so simple it's unbeliavable.
No pretensions on the stage part as well. As someone said, Pearl Jam keeping it real.
Not crazy about the song when compared to their other songs, but it seems to be doing fine.
Oh, me and my room mate are in that video...No biggie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Front row center 10/30 He's in the Philly's shirt/hat and I am in a blue longsleeve.
1:49-1:52 of that video....and 2:07
"It's as comfortable as can be. But when you're on stage playing with Neil, well -- it's one thing to be at the zoo and watch an animal pace around its cage. It's another to be in the cage with him." -Eddie Vedder
This VIDEO (not the cause... the song, the band, etc) is something a 6th grader could put together. It's terrible. In fact, it's downright embarrassing. Then again, they probably didn't have to do a single thing. They were filmed in Philly and I'm sure somebody else put the crappy warm fuzzy ocean crap together for them.
p.s. terrible editing too. i'm surprised they were able to synch the girl touching the camera with the end of the song. For a 6th grader, an A. For a major act.... F-.
Meh...I definitely think the video is too choppy. I like the live version of this song (very well done) and the underwater footage is lovely but the thing as a whole doesn't work for me.
For a band that rarely makes videos, one would think that when they actually release one, it should kick butt...such as the DO THE EVOLUTION video. That one was amazing!
I laughed to myself when I read your reply, because right after watching it I said, "good, but it's not Do the Evolution." I also loved the underwater shots, surfing shots, and the little girl. Everything else was nothing special, but I do very much appreciate the cause and the scenes at the end are truly heartbreaking.
who cares how shitty the vid or how shitty the song is. it's for the mother ocean and for the animals will be extinct eventually if this fucking BP oil spill keeps happening.
you people could bitch bout a free concert if pj ever did one
unfuckingreal
Ron: I just don't feel like going out tonight
Sammi: Wanna just break up?
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. If you disagree, you can do it in a respectful way. There is no need to attack or insult fellow club members.

dude im not attacking anyone at all. it just bothers me everything this band does or did is always nitpicked to no end on here. it gets pretty fucking tiring. i coulda and shoulda said alot worse but i'm tired of fedding the whiners of this board. if pj hadn't done this i'm sure somone woulda bitched bout pj not making a vid bout the oil spill use the song amongst wave song.
also are you a mod, yea i didn't think so. DON'T ever tell me what to do. let the mods do THEIR job.

Chill, I wasn't aiming that at you. This board is something I find fun to do in my spare time (what little I have of it). For the most part everyone on here seems like really cool people and obviously we have some things in common. However, it seems no matter what, on any topic, people seem to disagree (we are all different, with our own opinions, it's bound to happen). I'm not sure why people (people in general, not you) find it necessary to aim insults at others. This happens on most every topic and I find it disheartening. Like I said, I come on here to have fun and now, thanks to you, I'm a bit bummed. I honestly wasn't aiming that at you personally, yes, your post was a little more outspoken than some of the others, but I just made a general observation. I wasn't tying to be a mod, I don't think I said anything that insinuated that. I just wanted to remind my fellow board members that we're all on here to have fun and we should be respectful of each other, I don't think you (or any other member) can disagree with that. At a recent PJ show, I was talking to a fellow Ten Club member and I asked her if she ever got on here. Here reply (while snarling her nose), "no, people are mean on there." I haven't been a member since 2003 and I recently rejoined. So, I'm kind of new to this and as much fun as it is to carry on conversations with fellow fans, I'm starting to see what she meant. I'm not sure if it's worth it and that's a shame, because this message board is suppose to be fun. Anyway, peace, sorry you felt the need to be hostile toward me.
Edit: Anyway, back to what this thread is suppose to be about, this video really makes me want to go swimming.

are you smoking crack again?
its not bitching. this is a message board about Pearl Jam. when something new about PJ gets put on here, people will give their opinions on it. its not bitching to say it looks like it was put together by a grade schooler, and just because its about "mother ocean" or some crap doesnt mean that every one should be forced to sit around having a circle jerk to it. get over it, dude.
(and no one would complain if they didnt make an oil spill video. thats just ridiculous.)
I like how the band come off second best to the majesty of the ocean in that video, but the two styles do seem to bump up against each other some what. Wonderful stuff all the same, don't think I've ever had the chance to swim in seas that clear, maybe in Thailand...man I need a holiday!
beautiful, top marks on that one. what a perfect way to try and get a message out there, some of the finest underwater filming ever captured. again, beautiful.
I love seeing surfers duck dive
Looks so cool....
I wonder what that wave is?
This video is a fan-boy compilation of quasi-cool HD surf/ocean footage mashed with some home video and concert footage. I would expect to find this caliber of work posted by someone's 12-year-old nephew who just learned how to use iMovie. I actually face-palmed when the B&W footage transitioned into colour as the camera went underwater.
And why can't you use the studio recording of the track? This live version is less than stellar. I would have rather seen a straight lift of the song from the Austin City Limits special as-is (if they played it). Music videos were never a PJ thing, but what is this?
If you're expecting people/fans/supporters to pay for this video on iTunes (yes, I realize its a donation for a good cause) you should give them something of value.
Spend some money. Make something good. Or don't release it.
Wow what a dumb video. They sure are getting lazy with music videos.
Oh well who cares about music videos Backspacer is awesome enough to sustain me for a long time.
Did people complain about how amature the videos for Alive and Oceans were?
For being thrown together pretty quickly, I think the video is what I expected. The band playing live and pictures of the ocean. What's not to like?
The videos for alive and oceans are way better, The video for oceans kinda tells a story and you get teh feeling of the song, same with alive gives you that vibe, but amongst the waves is just boring and the oceans and videos of the band playing don't seem to really sync up at all.
I still love pearl jam but I'm not gonna pretend its a great music video. They have accomplished alot this music video doesn't really matter.

So when u purchase from itunes do u just get the mp3 or the video?
as nearly? always with a delay, so
I just saw it now!
...and being back in reality after my wonderful holiday.
My comment on the official site to it was a huge thank you to Pearl Jam aka Eddie, Stone, Jeff, Mike, Matt, Boom.
This video is just very touching. I got goosebumps all over my skin. It perfectly shows the beauty of the ocean and its inhabitants but also us enjoying it all sooooooo much.
And I thank them very much for doing action now, for drawing the attention over and over to the tragedy that is going on in the Gulf of Mexico. We just need to stay aware of this.
They have somehow a voice and they always use it so gently and in peace,
wise and very creativ but still to understand because it is in MUSIC.
So I am somehow indeed back in reality with all our huge problems and a clock ticking.
rock on Pearl Jam, please rock on... you are needed!
