I don't know why, but I left the venue that night feeling heavily underwhelmed... that feeling returned again after the second night - maybe a little bit less so than the first. That said, if you look at the show from a setlist's perspective, yes, there were some gems!

It was my first show, so I thought it was awesome until I saw them at the ACL festival. It had a good setlist w/ two of my favorites, Long Road & Comeback, but Eddie was a little off and I don't think the band was on top of there game. It has since been past by Kansas City and Belfast shows from this year, but all of the PJ shows I've been to have been great!!!!

man, the people who are bagging on this show baffle me.
ed comes right out and the first thing he says "we've got a lot of emotion to get through tonight". from the get go it was obvious this wasn't going to be a "normal" show. and as more songs passed... his comments in dissident, sad, given to fly, happy birthday right into come back, in hiding, man of the hour, love reign, the michael jackson speech into needle, smile.... the band wore their hearts on their sleeves. no it's not a balls to the wall rocker of a show- it wasn't meant to be. they told a story with that setlist. it is one of the more unique shows by them that i have seen, and i am glad i got to see it.

To be honest - I was at the shows and they never clicked with me - from the moment I got there, to the moment I left. I still listen to the boots from time to time, but they're not my favourite shows.

I was there and have the boot. I still listen to the boot. It was one of the more interesting shows I had been to. Is it a little disjointed sure, but there was a lot going on. I think the problem a lot of people have with this show is that people came from every where to see this show, we didn't know if we would get many more US shows Backspacer was not out yet. Remember all the complaining about the 10C ticket locations. I think expectations were so high for this show I believe that anything short of playing for 3 1/2 hours and playing really rare stuff (Black Red Yellow, Crown of Thorns, Fatal, etc) would be a let down for a lot of people. I think there are way to many that lose sight of the fact that this band is out there to play their music for us to enjoy and maybe forget about all the other crap that can be going on in ones life for a couple of hours. I know people have songs they like/love and would be thrilled to hear it live, I know I do. We can not forget that if not for Alive, Even Flow, Corduroy, Given To Fly, Do The Evolution you might not of become a Pearl Jam nut. Let's face it we are all Pearl Jam nuts and love this band.
It is because of these great fans and the wonderful pre-parties that my wife is know starting to understand why Pearl Jam is my favorite band. Since going to St Louis and Indy this year she had such a great time at the concerts that I have found her listening to more PJ then before.
Sorry to go on so long and on a couple of different tangents. I don't need to hear every song they play. I am just happy that I still get to my favorite band. They keep playing, I'll keep going.
Awesome boot and awesome show! Althought I did think that night 2 was better, night 1 was still pretty damn good. Come Back, Rats, Needle were the highlights for me.

I do not know what people are talking about being under whelmed from a PJ show. I cannot relate to that. Was there for both nights and I have been to a lot of back to back night shows but those were one of the most intriguing set lists for me. Very different from the night before. I think only 4 or 5 songs were repeated between the two nights. Also, I think that was one of the biggest fan club shows I have been to (stadium wise). Borgata night #1 was filled but the United Center had to be 70% fan club. Shit the bar before the bar could have filled the whole floor.I remember fan club were in the 300 level so that might have put a bad taste in their mouth.
My favorite boot to listen to right now is Bonaroo. That boot is just SICK!!!
Chicago 1 remains my favorite PJ show that I've seen so far. Interesting how we all have such different perspectives, but I was blown away by this show. The band just killed it and the setlist was insane. It was a very personal show and the band was feeling a lot of emotion on stage that night. Add night 2 (although the crowd wasn't nearly as good, as noted by Ed on stage) and I agree that these were two of the best back-to-back shows the band has ever played. Just my opinion.

The horrendous crowd both nights (in my opinion) is why I wasn't too into it, I think. Technically, it was a good show - even great.

I loved the setlist for Night 1, but it definitely wasn't conducive to a loud crowd. Very up and down mood wise. I think it had a better crowd than night 2, but they never left the fuse burnin long enough to go off. The night 2 crowd seemingly got more into it, but only b/c the way the band played.

Everyone needs to understand that classic shows do not exist outside of NY and Boston. Plain and simple. At least on this board.
The Chicago shows were great. I had a blast. For those that didn't connect with them, they've gone to too many shows and that's going to happen every 3rd or 4th show. It happens to me too. But again, if you are looking for good comments from this board about non-NY/Boston shows, it ain't going to happen. You'll hear it was a good show, but nothing past that.

I was at both Boston 06 shows, but San Diego 06 topped them both
Emotional shows are always a bit different ... take Berlin last night for example. If there was a well-known reason and buildup for the emotion at Chicago 8/23/09 like there was last night in Berlin, people would have been blown away by all the emotionally charged tunes ... as it was, people were just expecting an otherwise-normal type show and therefore the flow was a bit confusing ... i admit that at the venue i couldn't quite get into the show from a rocking perspective even though it had some amazing tunes, but listening to the bootleg now you can really hear how amazing the emotion was ... long road, sad, come back, in hiding, MOTH, Love Reign, Needle, Smile ... great bootleg

Right on. I remember comparing Chicago 1 to St Lou 03 in my head. I don't remember anything real heavy goin on in St Lou, as in Chicago, but the setlists just have a similar vibe to them.
I was at both Chi '09 shows, and while I fondly remember all PJ shows I've ever experienced, Chicago night 1 was without a doubt the most emotional for me out of the 8 I've seen.
Is it the best PJ show I've seen? Close, but probably not.
Was it the best crowd? Definitely not... I took a 1st timer to the pre-party and the show and he was shocked by the amount of bitching, moaning and crying taking place by all the fans who felt like their seats were shit...
But the fan beside me apologized ahead of time in case he "rocked out too hard", my buddy had a blast despite the fact that Pearl Jam (or any good music) is not his gig, and I let loose and singed, danced, cried, and probably got into it more than any previous show.
Every PJ show I've been to has effected me differently, based upon the behavior of the people surrounding me, the crowd in general, the set list, the band's mood, my state of mind at that point in my life, etc... I would suppose that it was that way for almost anyone...
If Adam and Eve had Taco Bell they would have never eaten that filthy fruit...
In terms of the setlist both nights...I'm just amazed that only a few songs were repeated on night 2, they just busted out a ton of stuff. Night 1 was very emotional because of the memorial for Jeff's friend, so you have to listen to the show with that in mind. I was at both shows, and I loved them both.
