Not that people aren't entitled to their opinions, but I think this should be less to do with how stylistic or artistic the video is. It's the message itself that we should all concentrate on taking to heart. We have a responsibility to take care of our planet. The more we practice, the better our kids will be and future generations to come. Let's not kid around, the future is going to be challenged enough already. We need to either get or remain conscious and involved.
I watched that and thought of my 5 year old daughter and taking her out for a swim or a surf. Made me cry and I'm fine with admitting that. Thanks to PJ for the video.
The little girl touching the camera makes me so impatient for summer to arrive and take my little girl to the beach and really let her experience the wonder of the ocean.
She turned four this year and has always loved the beach (as we all do living on the greatest beaches in the world) but has been too little and scared to let me take her under. This will be the summer.
These will be these beaches:
That's Dunsborough Beach
That's Meelup Beach
That's Yallingup
'Three Bears'
It would break my heart and soul to ever see places like this destroyed by man's greed or carelessness.
Protect the oceans!
Wow, those look amazing!!!
All within 10 mins of my home In fact my avatar pic was taken at a historic hotel overlooking Yallingup.
This is why when I hear of things like the Gulf Oil Disgrace or other issues affecting the ocean and beaches it really strikes a chord with me. We're so lucky and never take it for granted.
beautiful, top marks on that one. what a perfect way to try and get a message out there, some of the finest underwater filming ever captured. again, beautiful.

the little girl touching the camera makes me smile.
the picture of the oil-soaked pelican makes me cry.
Yeah, it's for a good cause, but this video is pretty poor. I though PJ was against putting out videos if they couldn't make a grand statement with it? This is just live footage + someone on holiday. The whole GUlf thing feels like it was just tacked on at the end so people couldn't bash it.

exactly! Some people on this board totally miss the point.
This is not a Pearl Jam video for their own promotion. This is a song that was used to bring awareness to how vulnerable our oceans are to the idiocy of people and other enviromnental damage we do.
The people surfing and play in the water are all "yeah! we have a great ocean! I had fun in it when I was a kid and now my kids can play in it! Yipee!" and they are juxtaposed against the devastating horrendousness that is the Gulf of Mexico. That's the future for our kids. Slimy yucky oceans teeming with dead and dying wildlife.
This is not about whether that's Ed or Ed's kid, or Ed's surfboard, or Ed's beach or any crap like that.
So yeah, I guess if everyone on this board watches the video just because it's Pearl Jam, and even bitch about it being a "crappy" video, at least they watched it and on some level, one can hope that something else sunk in.

I couldn't agree with you more. I also have a 5 year old daughter and got teary eyed watching the video.
p.s. I get the point... people are pigs and ruin everything. humans are the best at ruining things and then trying to fix them when they were too stupid to prevent the disasters in the first place.
I being a music video Pearl Jam fanatic and then sum - I just watched the video on a nice computer monitor with no lights on and head phones - This is the first post I agree with
Have to say I am completely underwhelmed by this video...it seems really disjointed to me and the live stuff mixed with the sea stuff just doesnt work for me
Great cause though and I will buy it to support the overall aim but as far as music videos go its pretty poor IMHO...so its PJ up to their usual tricks
I love this vid. The ocean pictures that flow into the live concert footage and back again... make total sense to me. As there have been so many PJ lyrics inspired by the ocean waters. The outcome of this disaster in the gulf is more out spread and serious then anyone perceives...I can't believe there hasn't been more of an outcry in the U.S. over what BP has done? Am I missing something up here? I love this band!!

I think the video is about Eddie being saved by love-- in the case of the video it's reflected by his daughter and how life altering it is to love your child. The clips of the ocean coincide w/ the lyrics. I really appreciated that. It wasn't just slopped together-- there was an intention there and I feel like it was achieved. The BP spill awareness is a benefit for video- but I don't think the video itself is about the oil spill.
Lucky me, I immediately recognized Ed's shirt, the fan on the stage and the building! I was there, on Ed's side section 218 (still have ticket on my fridge!) that night. I swear we made eye contact and he gave me a knowing nod and smile!! Acknowledgment from Eddie Vedder himself, awesome! Incredible night!

You complainers are so sad.
Thanks to the band for doing something to help.
I'm sad because I don't like a fucking video? I didn't knock their cause, I'm saying I didn't like their video. But I forgot, we're not allowed to NOT like ANYTHING this band does.
Thanks EPOTTSIII!

good to see that pearl jam released it as a single. i don't get why they film lots of live music videos though. i would have used the album version instead. but there are a few good things i can bring out too. one, it was a decent performance of amongst the waves. i like it how pearl jam tell it how it is and keep it real. two, i really enjoyed the footage of the ocean and the surfers. and three, it's good to see pearl jam making some noise about the oil spill.

i watched the vid about 4 times over with a daughter on each knee, seemed to make more sense the more we watched. Surf, dolphins, wildlife etc, the wee girl and a beautiful track to top it off (nice sing along for us too). We dig it and had a good talk about whats happening out in the gulf, awareness at all ages is got to be good. The oil spill is such a huge deal and my guess is we will be dealing with the fall out from this disaster for a long time. Good stuff from people who really care.
No complaints about the video here, as I love the ocean, and love watching the band. Nice touch with kids. Would like more of the whole band. I caught myself toning the sound down at some parts, not liking the whole song. Will probably be a hit. Those poor birds at the end.

Great video. Pearl Jam isn't about making stylish and flashy music videos. They never have been. Once in a blue moon they work with a director on a specific vision, but it's not something that has ever been at the top of their priorities.
Pearl Jam is all about the music and their live performance. They always have been and it's rare and beautiful. That's what you get in this video. Beautiful images of the ocean and a spectacular performance of an incredible song. (Makes my trip to Philly all the more worth it!)
Look at that ocean shot at 3:25 in the video! I would be satisfied with just that shot juxtaposed against the BP oil disaster pic. Awesome that the boys are stepping up. I know they don't go "uber public" on a lot of the issues they care about, but I would love to see them do even more on this one. Great first step!
Does anyone know WHO is in the ocean footage? I would love to know.
