Army Reserve: The song that COULD have been....

ever since i first listened to "self titled", i always think that army reserve could have been its best song if it weren't for the chorus. don't get me wrong, i really enjoy the song, especially the guitar work.
if it would have been written like "the wreck of the edmund fitzgerald" ... just one long story... it would have been amazing. every time i listen to it i hope that the chorus will magically disappear lol

anyone agree?

I agree...the chorus is not as good as it could have been. Sometimes I wish that the second time it's sung that the words are slightly different. But I guess it's not as bad as Pilate for me - now that song has good music, nice bridge, and a chorus I just can't listen to.

I also wish Army Reserve had another verse.

I absolutely love Army Reserve. The guitar and Ed's raspy voice make for one great song.

Actually, I think the chorus is fantastic. Its a such a wonderful harmony/melody mix. You have eds vocals, which are not that melodic combined with the beautiful harmonies provided by Jeff and (stone or matt?). Anyway one of my favorites off of Self Titled, in fact any album.

On another note, I think life wasted is my least favorite on that album. Such an easy chord progression, every guitar player has come across or played that main riff.

But anyway army reserve rules and should be played more. Peace!

I love Army Reserve, but I see what you're saying. The song almost sounds like a Ten-era song in the beginning, but then the chorus is a little abrasive, not as smooth and melodic as you expect upon first listen. I didn't much like it when I first heard it, but it grew on me, like all Pearl Jam songs.

well the chorus is no "EVACUATION" but it's pretty good...
Further back and forth a wave will break on me, today...

I've always liked it, did that Damien Echols write the chorus? Is that maybe why it doesn't go well with the rest of the song for some people since Ed didn't write it?

No, they deserve a fair trial.

I think the chorus works well with the song.

...however, the chorus for Hold On could have been SO much better than it is.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)

Of course they're innocent. There is not a single shred of evidence that proves they're guilty. But there is a ton of evidence that proves they were either diliberately set up to take the fall, or that at the very least their trial was a witchhunt.

How can 3 teenage boys who do not drive kill 3 children and transport their bodies to a forest and leave zero DNA evidence behind? Meanwhile, 100 yards away on the same night a bloody and disheveled man comes stumbling into Bojangles restaurant. The police are called, they come the next day and take blood samples, which they later claim to have "lost".

"Army Reserve" is such a great song, major highlight of that album. I dig the chorus, although I can see how it throws people off, as the verse is a hypnotic, slower 4/4, then it turns into 3/4 time for the chorus with some quirky accents from Cameron. Wish they would've played it at MSG2 2010 and not MSG1, I would've gone bonkers for it!
