Musings of a Pearl Jam "Spouse"
Yes, I used my husband's log-in to post my own personal musings. (is that wrong?)
My name is Christine. I am a Pearl Jam spouse.
Most of you know/have one...someone in your life that isn't as "in to" PJ as you are but quietly (and in my case, with a bit of eye-rolling and complaining!) follow you to the concerts in various locations around the US, get excited when you win the PJ item on eBay you've been watching, traveled to the stores for Backspacer CDs, DVDs, t-shirts. We're out here and we love you.
I just wanted to share a bit of my experience. A view from the other side if you will.
My husband of just over a year, Mike, has been a PJ fan for a long time...may have let the Ten Club membership lapse so we are still waiting to win the lottery but a die-hard fan none-the-less. When PJ came to New England in 2008 and he wanted to go to Hartford and Mansfield twice, I did a LOT of eye-rolling and "Really. Three shows in 4 days? Really."
I am now proud to say that after my 10th show in a little less than 2 years, I get it. I really get it. The whole "community" thing, the whole PJ "4 shows in a row" thing, my bawling during Footsteps in Newark thing. I get it all now. I now find myself the one explaining to co-workers and friends "No. No. It's not the same show every night. Yes, Pearl Jam is still around." I may not be freaking when I hear Sweet Lew live cause I don't realize this is the one-time-and-one-time-only that I will hear it, but I get it. I get it to the point that I purchased a photo by the amazing PJ photog Brian Babineau for the Team McCready charity and have it displayed prominently in my home...it was my 2nd ever show. Traveling around New England seeing the tribute band Backseat Lover also helped me get it...a small "family" that I can learn and grow with in regards to PJ.
So thank you. Thank you to my husband, thank you to the band, and thank you to the community that has allowed me to share a little of their passion.
Chris

When I met my husband, I didn't really listen to them. Now, four years later, he tells me I'm obsessed. He created a monster

I'm so forwarding this to my wife.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Been lucky to attend every show in New England since 1996.0 -
I was sitting on my couch today, coming down from my PJ high. Hartford, Boston and Newark all in the last 6 days. I decided to check the boards with my new Itouch that my wife painstakingly pent several nights uploading 2500+ PJ songs unto. I saw the "Musings of a Pearl Jam "Spouse"" and thought: "My wife could appreciate that"...then I realized- MY WIFE WROTE IT!!
:!: :P
I am truly blessed to have such a wonderful, thoughtful, (and pretty damn hot), bestfriend like her to share my (crazy) passion for this band with...bandaged hand in hand.

I go to the shows with my best friend Andrea. We met in 7th grade 18 years ago talking about Pearl Jam. It is our thing. We take a road trip and get away from it all. My favorite memories are the trips we take to see PJ.
My husband always says "maybe someday, I can go to a show with you". I tell him that he can get his own tickets, but the Ten club tickets are for Andrea and I. He is offended by this...but, I cannot help it...it is something that I cannot change..and do not want to change. Is this wrong?
If I knew where it was I would take you there. There's much more than this0 -

Dont do it!!!! Don"t take down the posters. She has to accept it, if it is something you really enjoy. In return, you must accept things that she enjoys.

my girlfriend is so sick of hearing Pearl Jam she would kick Eddie in the nuts if he showed up at our place. Although she loves Just Breathe and ITW, funnily enough.0

Very cool thread... my wife is coming with me to MSG tonight, not much eye-rolling but she still does not enjoy it nearly as muchas me...
I hope she will

I get it. Yeah, Seattle native, I knew about PJ back in high school, and tried to get tix, but when you have no car and Tower Records was oh so far away on a looong bus ride from the boonies....well, sometimes you just give up on trying to get tix. They played bars, concerts would sell out in 6 minutes. I gave up on trying to see them, I got to see Nirvana and Soundgarden, never PJ. Then in '99 I met a guy who was bonkers about PJ, he would tell me about how they'd play Missoula, and being from Butte, him and his friends would always go.
I heard about a PJ concert that you could only win tix to (the kick-off to the Binaural tour), so I tried winning them... Well, I won, and that tiny theatre was the best place to see them the first time! Then they donated a few autographed items to a radio station for auction, I won a CD. Then they played 2 homecoming concerts, and yep I won tix to that as well. For his birthday, I had the CD, kick-off and homecoming show tix, and a promo postcard all framed up. He loved it, though I think I love it more than he does, he doesn't 'collect' PJ items, or anything else really. I'm the one who collects all kinds of weird band/concert items (guitar/bass picks, drumsticks, t-shirts, posters etc). But the PJ shows are such a rush, and now I regret not skipping school to go to 'Drop in the Park'.The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

Fun thread! I'm lucky that my wife is pretty much a die-hard like myself. She's not an offical 10c member or spends half her waking hours on the boards like I do (at least at work
) but she's still crazy for them. We actually began dating on a road-trip down to Ft Lauderdale to see them in 96 which was our first show. 14 years (and sadly only 5 shows) later here we are, happily married and more and more obsessed with this great band's music everyday. We actually celebrated our wedding anniversary at Bonnaroo in 08. Such a kickass wife and soulmate I have. Its a very special thing to share this passion with my best friend - all of our other friends still think we're a bit nuts :? We were but stones your light made us stars0 -
Very good thread. When I met my now wife in 2005, she actually said to me, "You still like Pearl Jam, didn't they break up in 1997?" It almost ended our budding relationship right there.
However, she was forced to listen to a lot of PJ b/c I always had them on and now she loves them again. We saw 2 show's together in 2006, 2 in 2008,(both MSG's) and last night's show at MSG and she loved all of them, particularly the Garden shows.(we live in midtown, getting to the Garden is a breeze and is a better venue than the Jersey venues) She puts on Backspacer more than I do now and she knows all the words to every song from the Avocado.
It's crucial in a relationship to have somewhat similar passions about music, IMHO.
I am going again tonight, but my wife can't go, which is unfortunate. But I will still have a blast and I want to say again that this is an awesome thread.0 -
My name is Slap(for short) and I am a Pearl Jam spouse
GOD - THAT FEELS SOOOOOOOOOO GOOD TO GET OUT!!!!!!
my wife of almost 26 years pulled me into the PJ experience in '98. Barrie was our first show
together. We were positioned Mike's side just outside the mosh pit, probably the equivalent
of about 10th row in an arena. I have to that say I probably spent more time than I wanted to just
trying to keep upright as there was quite abit of jostling and shoving from the people behind us,
some trying to get closer and some just being idiots and trying to impersonate rams in a
head butting contest. Sometimes you just have to roll with the enviroment and adjust to the
surroundings.
Overall though, it was a great night and little did I know but it was to become the first
of many great nights, weekends, road trips and meet-ups. We have had the pleasure
of meeting so many terrific people from so many different places that we would
never had had the opportunity to do so if not for the band.
Friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.
The band eliminate borders and promotes togetherness, peace, love and respect for your
fellow human being.
and it doesn't hurt that they play some kick-ass music and give their fans everything they
want and more.
This messageboard is a fun place to come and play. It's usually just harmless banter, the odd
argument, a wee bit of bitching and a whole lot of laughs. But the main thread that runs
through the forums is a great love for the band and a deep respect for most of what they do,
on and off the stage.0
