If you truely respect the flag:
    U.S. Flag Code (4 US Code 1)
Sec. 8. - Respect for flag
"(d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery, etc..."

and this does not mean, making a shirt from a flag:
Sec. 3. - Use of flag for advertising purposes; mutilation of flag
"... The words ''flag, standard, colors, or ensign'', as used herein, shall include any flag, standard, colors, ensign, or any picture or representation of either, or of any part or parts of either, made of any substance or represented on any substance, of any size evidently purporting to be either of said flag, standard, colors, or ensign of the United States of America or a picture or a representation of either, upon which shall be shown the colors, the stars and the stripes, in any number of either thereof, or of any part or parts of either, by which the average person seeing the same without deliberation may believe the same to represent the flag, colors, standard, or ensign of the United States of America. "

    ref. http://suvcw.org/flag.htm

Granted, this usually pertains to military... civilians can do whatever they want.

"Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a holiday held on May 5 that commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.[2][3] It is celebrated primarily in the state of Puebla and in the United States.[4][5][6][7] While Cinco de Mayo sees limited significance and celebration nationwide in Mexico, the date is observed nationwide in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.[8] Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day,[9] the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.[10]"

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinco_de_Mayo

I don't know why this is getting out of control, the 5th of May has nothing to do with Mexican independance day (Sept 18th?)

So, why is this an issue?

They should have worn a French flag to be insulting

As long as you're not military... it's all good.
    ...
Off topic. The people I see at the Tea Parties wearing Stars and Stripes Rex Kwon Do Pants... I wonder if they know the Flag Ettiqutte. Then again, elementary school and the Flag Day lessons are 6 decades removed from them today.
But, i know they mean well.

Mexican food is my favourite food. I had a big Taco in a restaurant overlooking Monument valley many moons ago. It was the first time I realized that eating food could be a transcendental experience.

There's this little place down the street from me that makes the best soft tacos... Asada or Chicken. I'm too much of a Gringo for the Cabesa or Lengua.
Great burritos and flautas (taquitos, to the Gringos).

can't you and these kids give the mexicans their day? they can wear the flag the other 364 days a year. these kids were doing it to either intimidate or marginalize may 5 and though i do not think they should have been sent home, they should have been put on notice for trying to make others feel uncomfortable. or at least do what we had to do, turn our shirt inside out. its all about respect...

First off these kids were Mexican Americans. From what I remember this is still the United States of America and they can do what they want. It is not like they were burning Mexican flags or using Mexican flags as rags or something.

    Bottom line...
They're kids. We expect kids to dress like shit because of the fact that kids typically dress like shit.
There was no reason why the kids should have been sent home... and there's no reason why people need to get their urine/feces encrusted Stars and Stripes panties in a twist. It's not a big fucking deal and definately NOT newsworthy... I mean.. the fucking market dropped 1,000 POINTS today!!!! Yeah it rollercoastered back to 350 under. THAT is a big fucking deal, kiddies.

Probably pretty good with most Americans if they are paying attention and care about the current state our country is in bcos an upside down american flag specifies only "...as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property." It doesnt mean any disrespect as which I suspect you obviously intended it to be or were hoping for.

The question is...should you be kicked out of school if you wear it? I don't think so.

What's your point? That if it was Mexico they wouldn't be allowed to wear tshirts with flags on them? I wasn't aware Mexico had laws against wearing tshirts with flags on them...
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

I wonder who these people are that thought it was a good idea to send kids home for wearing a t-shirt with a USA flag on it... I'm not a flag-waving patriotic by any means... but this is just retarded.

I don't agree with what this principal did. These kids civil rights were violated, bcos you cant tell one group that they cant express their beliefs and tell another group that they can. I also think it was un American, But at the sametime teenagers like to taunt each other, but I listend to an interview of one of the students step fathers and he said "that his son wears patriotc shirts all the time "
No one is telling the latino kids that they shouldn't wear the mexican flag or they shouldn't celebrate and so forth.
We are a very tolerant society when it comes to different beliefs, cultures and ethnicities, and our diversities shouldn't tear us apart.
