As i suspected they were just being asses. No one told them to not be proud to be an American. It was clearly an attempt to provoke some sort of response. They are probably just assholes. That being said, they should have been able to wear it, but the Principal should also be able to act in the way he sees fit to make sure that the school day is not interrupted by some sort of event, whether it be a fight, shouting match, or even worse an all out hate crime one way or the other.
My question to these kids is why is it so important that you show your American pride today? I would venture to guess they didn't do it on St. Patrick's day. I truly people like this, I hate people who always have to shove something in someone's face just to antagonize when common decency would just say leave it alone.

Just having another countries Holiday is going beyond being decent.
....if they want to celebrate and so proud to be Mexican why are they in America?....does Mexico celebrate the 4th of July............I never imagined this could ever happen..... aren’t the students opposed to this American from Mexican decent?

Man, you must be a real buzzkill on St. Patrick's Day.

By the way, regarding your point about July 4 - Cinco de Mayo isn't the Mexican Independence Day, and is barely celebrated in Mexico. For all intents and purposes, it's an American holiday, and is a chance to celebrate the Mexican culture.

Perhaps in the future you might want to take five minutes to educate yourself about a holiday before you insult it.
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

People of varying descents have traditions and cultures and 99.9% of the time, no one in our nation actually refers to themselves as American, but instead everyone is (insert place/location/religion here) "blank" American. We are the great melting pot - yet people at some point have become so over the top in the other direction, feel it is ok to ignore this or other people's enjoyment of their family history or culture, etc.

People who are so adamant about this stuff baffle me - do you really care if people want to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, St Patricks Day, Columbus Day or many of the other varying cultural things some celebrate? It's doing no harm to you, unless you specifically do not respect others right to culture and diversity. But when you escalate it in order to make a statement or point (like this kid did), you're just an idiot. Extremism in any fashion doesn't help things and that's who has problems with all these kinds of issues.

Lastly, everyone is so damned patriotic in our nation and over the top with this nonsense, yet as a whole, everyone is very uneducated, doesn't know our history and doesn't do their part in our nation's well-being (citizens' responsibility). In all honesty, if these people had their way, they'd actually undo all the things our nation was founded upon - not so American and patriotic after all.

OMG, we had such great Mexican food and margs last night, it's definitely one of my fav food cultures. No one should be intimidate by the idea of celebrating other cultures, IMHO. It reminds me of my parents teaching us about other cultures through dinner when we were young. Which, in turn, reminds me of this....

Why is the US flag it offensive to mexican-americans anyhow?

(*I think they should apologize cause it is a Mexican Heritage Day," Annicia Nunez, a Live Oak High student, said. "We don't deserve to be get disrespected like that. We wouldn't do that on Fourth of July.")

Funny that the mexican-american student apparently thinks Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence day or something.

This is a very good example of PC going way to far. Time for all to come back to reality.

can't you and these kids give the mexicans their day? they can wear the flag the other 364 days a year. these kids were doing it to either intimidate or marginalize may 5 and though i do not think they should have been sent home, they should have been put on notice for trying to make others feel uncomfortable. or at least do what we had to do, turn our shirt inside out. its all about respect...

You seriously think it's a problem for them to wear the shirts? They may have been doing it for a crappy reason, but c'mon.

I agree, also the administration did not need to act the way they did by sending the kids home. The teens are there to learn and a better lesson than sending them home could have been taught here. The end result the administration now probably has is some unnecessary resentment between cultural holidays which could lead to violence within the school.

absolutely i do. i think they did it to be dicks. like "we will show them, we are real americans.." how would the christians feel if on easter sunday me and a few friends show up at their church with rabinnical or muslim attire? i have the right to do it yes, but doing so would make me a dick.

i have a problem with the flag being used as a fashion statement in general. i don't like seeing it on t-shirts and especially on boxer shorts. i think it reduces the value and symbolism of the flag. like what happens to your flag t-shirt when you are about to take a shower? it gets crumpled up and thrown in the laundry bin. and the flag is not supposed to touch the ground, right? i feel worse about it rubbing up against some dude's sweaty ball bag in the form of flag boxers....

same way any imperialist nations flag is offensive i guess. perhaps the mexicans, who are american by definition anyway, knew these kids were jerkoffs and their reasoning for wearing the american flag was purely antagonistic.

personally i take offense at having the union jack displayed prominantly on my countrys flag.

If you truely respect the flag:
    U.S. Flag Code (4 US Code 1)
Sec. 8. - Respect for flag
"(d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery, etc..."

and this does not mean, making a shirt from a flag:
Sec. 3. - Use of flag for advertising purposes; mutilation of flag
"... The words ''flag, standard, colors, or ensign'', as used herein, shall include any flag, standard, colors, ensign, or any picture or representation of either, or of any part or parts of either, made of any substance or represented on any substance, of any size evidently purporting to be either of said flag, standard, colors, or ensign of the United States of America or a picture or a representation of either, upon which shall be shown the colors, the stars and the stripes, in any number of either thereof, or of any part or parts of either, by which the average person seeing the same without deliberation may believe the same to represent the flag, colors, standard, or ensign of the United States of America. "

"Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a holiday held on May 5 that commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.[2][3] It is celebrated primarily in the state of Puebla and in the United States.[4][5][6][7] While Cinco de Mayo sees limited significance and celebration nationwide in Mexico, the date is observed nationwide in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.[8] Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day,[9] the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.[10]"

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinco_de_Mayo

I don't know why this is getting out of control, the 5th of May has nothing to do with Mexican independance day (Sept 18th?)

So, why is this an issue?

They should have worn a French flag to be insulting

First off these kids were Mexican Americans. From what I remember this is still the United States of America and they can do what they want. It is not like they were burning Mexican flags or using Mexican flags as rags or something.

    Bottom line...
They're kids. We expect kids to dress like shit because of the fact that kids typically dress like shit.
There was no reason why the kids should have been sent home... and there's no reason why people need to get their urine/feces encrusted Stars and Stripes panties in a twist. It's not a big fucking deal and definately NOT newsworthy... I mean.. the fucking market dropped 1,000 POINTS today!!!! Yeah it rollercoastered back to 350 under. THAT is a big fucking deal, kiddies.
