AP - The Vatican.... made it clear for the first time that bishops and other high-ranking clerics should report such crimes [sexual abuse] to police if required by law.

-- I don't even know what to say... logically, this means that previously the policy was to conceal sex abuse? Is this the Catholic church or NAMBLA??? And only "if required by law." :shock:

Methinks the Catholic church needs to crawl out of the dark ages.
Everything not forbidden is compulsory and eveything not compulsory is forbidden. You are free... free to do what the government says you can do.

    The fact that the Vatican can not come out and morally condemn the sexual abuse of a child clearly demonstates that -

    funny how the catholic leaders are against gay rights, yet they look the other way when the priests can't keep their hands off of the alterboys...that is the definition of hypocracy to me...

    all this says to me is that celibacy is an outdated and illogical lifestyle choice. when your job requires you to deny yourself of basic urges and drives such as sex, then the job is the problem, not the human...

    Honestly, I really cannot believe the idiocracy of the Catholic church. I've not got much more to say on the subject really, this just makes me despair more of there being any sanity in there.

    i was reading yesterday how christopher hitchens and richard dawkins have asked human rights lawyers to produce a case against pope benny in regards to his cover up of sexual abuse within the catholic church.

    in a letter dated 1985 the current pope signed a letter arguing that the "good of the universal church" should be considered against the defrocking of an american priest who committed sex offenses against 2 boys. this was when benny16 was incharge of the congregation for the doctrine of the faith, which deals with sex abuse cases.

    the pope will be in britain in september and dawkins and hitchens believe he will be unable to claim diplomatic immunity as he is not the head of a state recognised by the UN.

    If this was pulled off it would be a victory for logical thinking world-wide.

    I don't see celibacy causing men to RAPE CHILDREN!

    And it's not just altar boys who are victims. My best friend was a little girl of 4 or 5 when she and the other little girls who lived near the 'rectory' were molested by one of the priests. Her family had never attended the church.

    Although Vatican City is not a full member of the UN it is recognized as an independent country and has observer status within the UN. Thus, the Pope maybe able afforded status of recognized diplomatic immunity.

    As the crimes committed by the Catholic church were world-wide, a case for crimes against humanity could be made, which would then negate his claim of diplomatic immunity from prosecution. That's such a long shot when you think of the countries like Spain and France that would object to such a prosecution. Yet, such a filing would restrict their movement and open their activities to public scrutiny.

    anyone here a practicing catholic? ... i find it interesting that there is really not much media attention to this matter considering it's implications ... i mean ... any political head of state or politician would have resigned in disgrace if he/she was caught looking at kiddie porn ... yet, here is a man who chose to allow young children to be abused for the sake of maintaining some fallacy that is the catholic church ...

    someone explain to me why there isn't an internal backlash?

    I think your question goes to the heart of the matter......I think a backlash would require people to examine what they believe in and why......That kind of introspection would likely shatter everything they've been told. It needs to happen, but I worry that it won't. It's high time that these crimes are seen for what they are and the perpetrators (the clergy/nuns/bishops/pope) need to be prosecuted.

    The Catholic church is now claiming that celibacy is not at the heart of these sexual abuse cases. The Catholic church is claiming that homosexuals within the church are the abusers and offenders. How special!!!!

    The Catholic church's doctrine of celibacy contradicts its very teachings and policies.

    1. If the main purpose of God for creating man and woman is to procreate, then celibacy is, by its very nature, a contradiction to God's law.

    2. To state that church officials should report sexual abuse "if" required by law, indicates that the Catholic church condones, but, will not seek prosecution or church sanctions against priests who engage in sexual activity with children determined to be of legal age, which varies from State to State and from country to country.

    -- The Catholic church, by its implication of legal age, is condoning homosexuality, pedophiles and the continued rape of minors around the world.. If, in the eyes of the Catholic church engaging in homosexual activity is a sin, then age should not be an issue. Pedophiles like very young children, so they are not going to change, thus, the sexual abuse of children by these priests will continue. Since children and minors can't consent and most repeatedly, sexually abused children lack the capacity to say no, these priest are engaging in rape, even after legal age is obtained.

    3. What the Catholic church failed to acknowledge by its statement "if" required by law, is "CONSENT".

    --The one thing the Catholic church can not do, is to acknowledge sexual activity by CONSENT. To acknowledge that sexual activity must be by consent, would be to acknowledge the breakdown of the veil of celibacy and that these priests are simply engaged in rape no matter what form it takes.

    --The Catholic church also knows that priests - having taking a veil of celibacy - knows their sexual activity with a minor is not for the purpose of leading to marriage, it is not for the purpose of procreation, it is simply for the need to fulfill their sexual desires.

    4. The Catholic church, by trying to protect is doctrine of celibacy has created a save haven that has cultivated the continuous predatory and degenerate acts of sexual abuse and rape of children around the world.
