i've just finished reading the last 89 pages of this thread. yes, all of them.
observations:
- lots of bitching about the rock radio (gheydio) station
- the massive downturn in this thread after you all found out that PJ weren't coming
- lots of bitching about the rock... did i say that already?
hmmmm, to be blunt - fuck radio. i never listen to the radio, unless i have to, and thats rare. mind you, queenstown's studio.fm is the exception. the reason i dispise the radio is because i like to listen to what i wanna hear, not what someone else puts on to attract more listeners, all in the aid of selling more adspace.
and then there is the no-repeat workday, and as soon as 5pm hits, you hear the same old shit all over again. fuckin ghey! and to those of you that say the radio is important to attract new fans and to promote our fav bands (PJ for eg), well i'm still up-to-date with my fave bands, and with their music. i'd rather be introduced to a new band from a friend, than to have mainstream radio forcefeed it to me. </ radio rant>
so, where's all the PJ loyalty disappeared too? it seems to have disappeared faster than the 'planned' NZ tour. I wouldn't wanna be PJ and read this thread, especially the end. sure, you're disapointed, but PJ didn't do it on purpose just to spite you all.
@ i_am_a_wishlist - the email address you attached to the PJ petition doesn't work.
i flew across to sydney to see PJ live in concert for the first time, as a hardcore fan would do. sorry to those who waited to see if they'd announce NZ dates and then missed out. but hey, ebay is a great thing for unwanted tickets, so yet again, no excuses.
and yay for jetstar's birthday special: 2 for the price of one $500 return for 2 people.

All 98 pages? Geez, you're keen. I don't think anyone believes that the band pulled out on NZ on "purpose", but fuck, you still can't help feel a little gutted about being left out... again. Especially when they're so damn close.
I saw them in Sydney too, but regardless of expenses, I'd rather see my favourite band in my home town (or at least country) any time. I'd say that would go for anyone, the world over.
Regardless of expense? That's an extra $1,100 just to see them in my home country. Even if I wanted to go to Auckland, I not obsessed enough with Pearl Jam, to justify and extra $1000-odd dollars.
And yes, I'm gutted they never came here too, but until a desirable venue is found, we should get used to it.
'Oh but U2 and the Stones still came' - that argument will never hold, and you know why? We've now missed out on not one, but two Pearl Jam World tours because we don't have a suitable venue.
What's defined as suitable one may ask? Especially seeing that they played to 5000 people in Newcastle? Well it's obvious that we don't have one that 'fits' into PJ's 'venue specs'; the 8 year absence surely hammers that point in.
All the 'gutted-ness' that's present in here is misdirected. It should be directed at local body councils/government for not having adequate facilities, rather than packing a sad.

Ok sure, there's always going to be exceptions to the rule. Sometimes there’s going to be no sane option but to see a band play in a country other than your own. Price you pay for living outside of the major city centres I guess. But for most other people, those that are presented with two reasonable options, they’re going to opt for the show at home 9 times out 10.
And I don’t know if I really buy this suitable venue stuff. Surely, SURELY, there is somewhere here that would do the job other than Vector (if that ever gets completed and actually lives up to all its promised to be). But that said, you’re right in saying that this frustration needs to be directed to the local authorities… in this case, whoever it is responsible for getting Vector ready for use within the next friggin' 50 years.
a) I just started a new job in a field (journalism) that i've always wanted to be in. I can't take time off at the moment at all. As much as i've tried to convince myself otherwise, making it in my field of choice is much more important than seeing my favourite band.
b) I can't afford it. I ain't getting paid mega bucks at the moment so I can't afford to eat out/take holidays etc let alone fly to Australia to see PJ.
c) I'd love to see them over there, but it's nothing like seeing them in your home town.
I've spent thousands and thousands on bootlegs, shirts, books etc but when I saw on the tour program they were coming here I decided I wasn't going to Australia. If I had my time again I probably would've booked to go there, and as a result maybe wouldn't be able to go/afford it.
And the venue argument is bullshite. They played GA at Reading and Leeds in UK, and they played 5,000 capacity venue in Newcastle. It's all a bunch of crap and 10C are a bunch of morons for not at least giving us the courtesy of knowing why. They don't get my 30 bucks anymore.
Its been 8 years, but I still believe...PJ in NZ 06!

Home town, home country or both? Home town would rule out most of New Zealand as 'generally' acts of this nature would be hard to find in places outside Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. I'm still left with the same issue, being three-quarters of the way down the South Island. If money was my only issue (which it was this time around), then home country advantage may be a better option. Saves the strip search I got in customs.

Well said. An answer/explanation would be appreciated. The emails I've received back from Vector don't say much. More on that to come later.

HEY GUYS FYI - VECTOR AREN'T MAKING IT. IF YOU WANT TO FIND OUT WHEN IT'S READY, EMAIL MAINZEAL WHO ARE BUILDING THE FUCKING THING. OR THE AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL.

I see your point with being from Queenstown. Maybe if I lived there I would've had no dramas with going to Aussie. It'd be the ultimate experience to see them in your home town and to have Ed speak to you as a New Zealand crowd but obviously once the first note strikes it doesn't matter much.
In any case if we had've got a show Brendan said I could take his 2nd 10C ticket and i'd owe him quite a few beers. I don't need to be a member of a fan club that gives me a vinyl (that i've never listened to) that comes about 6 months late, and a magazine with banana bread recipes in it. Fuckin lame.

well really.....personally, if people want to be a fan club member and get the great perks out of the fanclub, then that is fine.....there really is no need to call it "fuckin lame"
obviously to alot of people, myself included, love getting a Vinyl record, even if it is a little late, its a great collector item. Getting a cool mag in the mail is like christmas....and if you dont like banana cake, then dont fuckin make it!
getting fan club tix is very very cool aswell.....please do go putting shit on something that means so much to a whole lot of people in here....its just not necessary. and yes, i am a defensive fan

Nicely said Tig!!
Stop having a dig at the band for something they have no control over.
There are 2 sides to blame in this fiasco:
1) The people who are actually in charge of building the Vector.
2) The tour promoter, because it's up to them to find suitable venues for events.
You all keep on saying that PJ could've played somewhere else. Sure they could've, but yet again that's the promoters' job, and in all reality a back-up plan should've been organised by the promoter just in case the venue wasn't going to be ready.

That's fine and all but you have to realise that when you're a member of Ten Club and they don't come to your country you are hard pressed to be happy. I personally love the vinyl (which admittedly I won't listen too but it's sentimental all the same) and Deep magazine but buying the fan tickets is the peak to the membership.
I myself went to Brissy because they weren't playing here (remember the last NZ show was how far back?) and I am happy with my Ten Club membership where as others weren't as lucky.
I can understand where NZJamFan's frustration is coming from even is his words are a bit harsh. I personally believe the promoters were the main problem, but feel that the band could at least make some thoughts on missing NZ public to ease the frustration.
You're also defensive over something you love, he's angry over something he loves but won't get to see anytime soon.
All I'm trying to say if you got your concerts (as well as 2003) and we missed out again due to something out of our control. It hurts and as a PJ fan you should at least to able to sympathize even if his anger was a little off...
It'd be the ultimate experience to see them in your home town and to have Ed speak to you as a New Zealand crowd but obviously once the first note strikes it doesn't matter much.
Yes, that is so true. Especially when Ed was going on about how he'd never met and Aussie that he didn't like. Maybe he should get out more, lol.

I stand by all I said. Obviously this is only an opinion and so is yours so we're all quite right to voice them. I was in the 10C for a year, but for my $50NZ I saw no value out of it. Im 23, how many 23 year olds have vinyl players? Almost none in my neck of the woods. It's not particularly a great collectors item as thousands of people have one as well. If you can get the whole set of them then sure, but I don't.
Fan club tickets....to what? We haven't had a show in 8 years. It's okay for an Aussie fan or an american (non-south) fan, but I have to pay the same as you yet I have no chance to use fan club tickets. If they don't wanna come down here then fine (our stadiums are shit so I can understand) but don't put us on the tour booklet then not give us a single piece of information as to why they are now not coming. Thats heartbreaking. Ever experienced that?Nah you haven't. I may never see my favourite band because I was misled that I was going to see them in November, and that sucks.
I didn't bake the banana bread don't worry. I dont care who's dog is who, there was fuck all exciting stuff in that Deep magazine (in my opinion). Don't get me wrong, you Australian fans get plenty for your buck coz you get better seats. Us Kiwis? All we get is 3/5th of fuck all.
The one thing that shits me is the lack of communication. One person got an email back after our petition etc saying 'it doesn't look likely'. Is that it? That's poor. Pathetic even. Challenge me if you like, but I guarantee these points are all prophetic because i'm your typical fanatical NZ PJ fan.
Please don't decipher it as me having a go at the band. I'm not. They don't owe me anything after so many years of great albums and so much happiness for me. I blame their management and promoters etc for keeping us in the dark.

So any one going to U2? I can't believe the hype. But they haven't been here in 14 years. But Next time (if ever) Pearl Jam finally plays here I doubt there will be as much hype.

It has been 19 years (?) since U2 here was here...I could be completely wrong on that figure but it's been a long time. Bono's tired old poverty and charity shtick ensures they're worldly known unlike Pearl Jams (now ex) anti policy on mainstream. I guess you have to expect it. But just look at U2's stage set and Bono's rantings, it's not all about the music.

tell ma about it. they pulled in $180 million last year. you'd think he'd throw some of his cash to africa. nope let's put on a concert to tell everyone we are sick of poverty in africa but keep out millions for ourselves. at least someone like bill gates puts shit loads of money into africa. And another thing that pisses me off. almost everyone goes apeshit about the fuckin stage set that's like 2 container loads and requires 2 747s to cart all their people around. Talk about kicking mother nature in the balls. Good ol' Pearl Jam's got the carbon reduction strategy. So it's about time Bono pulled his finger out stopped having tea and crumpets with George Bush and use his millions to make a difference.
PS I don't really have anything against U2's music. Bono just annoys me. Especially with his stupid sun glasses. Ireland isn't even that sunny.

Seriously mate....i know what you are saying...i really do. Unfortunately for me I missed out on this tour, not tickets, had to go OS for work.....im feeling the pain of no concert for me!
And I feel so freakin bad for you guys in NZ. I think it was me who first brought the booklet to everyones attention. I remember seeing it and getting so happy for everyone in NZ cos it said New Zealand in the booklet.
again, i know what you are saying and I totally understand your sadness, its just sometimes we make a point about a certain thing and it is taken ... by others like myself....totally to heart.
I love the band, and if I never got to see them again.....ever, i would be happy because I have been lucky enough to have seen them once in my lifetime......you guys....im feeling for....and you know what, ever since I found out I was gonna be in the States when the Aus tour was on, i have been praying for a New Zealand tour announcement so i can head to NZ when I got back to see them....to no avail.
I guess .... im just pissy at the "lame" comment....and whether or not i know the history begind the comment, i get defensive. I am sorry mate, i just wanna defend the fantastic piece of memorabilia I get every year in the mail....even if it is not a massive deal to all......it is to me.....and I did cook the banana bread......fuckin sunk on me!!

Well, finally managed to get back online after over a week of being back (too many things to do!).
Yeah, U2 were pretty good, but that Friday show, what a lame end to the concert! It couldn't have been more of an anti-climax. Now, Saturday they ended with One Tree Hill, a much better choice in my opinion!
As for my four PJ shows, they were all we'd hoped for. It's been so many years since I've seen them (Auckland 98) and my g/f had never seen them, but these shows really made up for it. It didn't hurt that we managed to score front row centre tickets an hour before one of the shows, but even from our other seats these shows really lived up to our expectations.
We managed to score a setlist, and a couple of Mike picks from the first row, so I guess we're going to frame them up with our tickets, hopefully that'll turn out nicely. As if the trip didn't cost enough, now I gotta get the 4 posters framed!
My only regret is that we didn't get to more shows! Newcastle would've been nice, but I think the pair of Adelaide shows were really very good, the crowd rocked!
i personally feel very bad for you, for all of the NZ fans :( i can only imagine that gut wrenching feeling when you realise they are not coming your way yet again on a world tour. I can understand that angry dissapointment, i did think they were going to do a special tour when i saw on my tour booklet new zealand, and i felt awful when it wasn't to be .. but one thing i know is that they truly do love NZ, they always talk about them with such love, especially since the Finn Brothers are there, they have many friends in your country, and i hope that they do a special tour just for you guys very soon. I know when i'm upset about something not working out i lash out too, i really hope that something happens for you all!

i've just finished reading the last 89 pages of this thread. yes, all of them.

"No matter how cold the winter, theres a springtime ahead'
Yeah well if the same venues around the country are ok for other random acts to perform at... maybe they are little too fussy...
P.S. See how I don't really care how you use the quote function?
Home town, home country or both? Home town would rule out most of New Zealand as 'generally' acts of this nature would be hard to find in places outside Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. I'm still left with the same issue, being three-quarters of the way down the South Island. If money was my only issue (which it was this time around), then home country advantage may be a better option. Saves the strip search I got in customs.
Well said. An answer/explanation would be appreciated. The emails I've received back from Vector don't say much. More on that to come later.
Yep, touche
HEY GUYS FYI - VECTOR AREN'T MAKING IT. IF YOU WANT TO FIND OUT WHEN IT'S READY, EMAIL MAINZEAL WHO ARE BUILDING THE FUCKING THING. OR THE AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL.

I realise that, but Mainzeal are not the ones that the promoters approach, hence the email conversations with Vector.
"No matter how cold the winter, theres a springtime ahead'
well really.....personally, if people want to be a fan club member and get the great perks out of the fanclub, then that is fine.....there really is no need to call it "fuckin lame"
obviously to alot of people, myself included, love getting a Vinyl record, even if it is a little late, its a great collector item.
To sum it up....DON"T BLAME THE BAND!!!

"No matter how cold the winter, theres a springtime ahead'
tell ma about it. they pulled in $180 million last year. you'd think he'd throw some of his cash to africa. nope let's put on a concert to tell everyone we are sick of poverty in africa but keep out millions for ourselves. at least someone like bill gates puts shit loads of money into africa.
I went Friday night, and in no way an I a U2 fanboy - I don't own any of their music whatsoever.
But they brought it.
And no matter what you say, they turned up, unlike Pearl Jam. And don't give me that venue shit, as Pearl Jam played the same venue in 1998.

Anyone hear the dumb 'Eddie Vedder is gonna be on stage with U2' rumour that spread on the Friday? Never mind the fact they played Perth that night.
"No matter how cold the winter, theres a springtime ahead'
Glad you had a good time! I haven't seen them since 98 too, but I also saw them in 95.
Oh - if you're in Auckland there's a good framing shop in Apollo drive in Mairangi Bay that I can recommend.

Factory Frames? Yeah, they did my other poster. They're good, but it's still pretty expensive.
Also the Rock just played Aaron Lewis' version of Black (he's from Staind) and if you've heard it you'd know how cringe-worthy it is....why can't they play the original? That version sucks. "her legs spread out before me". Fuckin idiot.
