I'd like to broaden my appreciation for Rush.
I love this tune and I am looking for favorites from you folks.
I listen to Rush on the radio and the internet.
Although I used to own several cassette tapes of Rush, I admit to not owning a single cd from them.

    2112 is an awesome place to start if you want an album. I'm no expert on the band but someone recommended it to me years ago, mentioning they are always cited as being some of the most accomplished musicians in the world, and I only got round to buying it when the guy who recommended it passed away. The first 'side' of the vinyl is amazing.

    I listened to them for the first time a few weeks ago & it was just weird to me. It sounded like Spinal Tap, Queen whilst sucking on helium.

    I've seen Rush 4-5 times, they are ridiculously good. I'd start with Chronicles-it might be out of print now, but you can certainly find it use somewhere for cheap. Then I'd go with permanent waves, moving pictures, or 2112.

    Where's g under p? Amazing band, Geddy Lee is one of the most tasteful bassists of all time. He can shred, but is also very melodic.

    Here I am, just call me The Working Man. Well in order to broaden your horizon with RUSH depends on the kind and style of music you prefer. Some Rush fans prefer their older music mid 80's back to 74' and some present on back to the 80's. I can tell you what I prefer and it may not matter to you, you may have to have some trial and error. For example I didn't completely like their last album Snakes and Arrows i felt it was an incomplete album compared to Vapor Trails which is within my top 5 of all Rush albums.

    Most fans speak od 2112 maybe due to how unusual it was at the time and still is today in the conceptual aspects it presents to the musical ear. Not many bands make records like that anymore where there's no difficulty in listening from top to bottom. I could suggest many different albums to you, they're many to choose from. Each one has something to like or is utterly captivating that you wear out the repeat button.

    However, visit a fansite such as www.therushforum.com they're many many different boards but the one dedicated to RUSH music is a start. It's free, pose your question and you'l get bombarded with answers but again it depends on what you like, your tastes etc. The thing that attracted me to the band in the late 70's was there musicianship, professionalism and they have never dissappointed me live I the 40+ shows I've seen.

    Grace Under Pressure is probably my most listened to and favorite album, depends on my mood or maybe it's due to the first time I ever saw them live. :D

    I'd try Moving Pictures (Tom Sawyer, Limelight and YYZ).

    Moving Pictures is probably the best place to start. Their best-known songs are on that album, and it's kind of a nice mid-point between the '70s progressive stuff and the 80s synth-based albums.

    Or you can pick up a greatest hits compilation like Chronicles or Retrospective and then explore certain albums in more depth. I find that my favorite Rush songs on any album are not the ones released as singles.

    YYZ is one of their best instrumentals but to me their best La Villa Strangiato and one of the best versions is on the live album Exit Stage Left their second live album. Another thing I like about RUSH is there abilty to create some of the best intrumental songs out there.

    From Moving Pictures my second favorite song The Camera Eye just behind Red Sector A from Grace Under Pressure.

    A great, great band....however, they seem to be a magnet for haters. :twisted:

    BTW, count me as another vote for "Moving Pictures."

    I'd also vote for Moving Pictures as a great place to start. If you like that, try moving one album back to Permanant Waves - also a killer album. If you want to hear them in all thier epic 20 minute song glory, check out Hemispheres. It was the first Rush album I ever listened to and got me hooked for the last 30 years!

    If you like the video for Mystic Rhythms http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYiFrb7tWEM then you might explore my favorite Rush album Power Windows. It's fairly heavy on synthesizers, but you need to view it as a product of its time (1985). Please try to ignore Geddy's spectacular poodle hair.
