Texas Board of Education cuts Thomas Jefferson out of its textbooks.
The Texas Board of Education has been meeting this week to revise its social studies curriculum. During the past three days, “the board’s far-right faction wielded their power to shape lessons on the civil rights movement, the U.S. free enterprise system and hundreds of other topics”:
– To avoid exposing students to “transvestites, transsexuals and who knows what else,” the Board struck the curriculum’s reference to “sex and gender as social constructs.”
– The Board removed Thomas Jefferson from the Texas curriculum, “replacing him with religious right icon John Calvin.”
– The Board refused to require that “students learn that the Constitution prevents the U.S. government from promoting one religion over all others.”
– The Board struck the word “democratic” from the description of the U.S. government, instead terming it a “constitutional republic.”
As the nation’s second-largest textbook market, Texas has enormous leverage over publishers, who often “craft their standard textbooks based on the specs of the biggest buyers.” Indeed, as The Washington Monthly has reported, “when it comes to textbooks, what happens in Texas rarely stays in Texas.”

Wow.
Just wow.Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V0 -
It still pisses me off that a single state's bureaucracy that just happens to be dominated by right wing buffoons can dictate to the rest of us what can be taught to our kids."It's not hard to own something. Or everything. You just have to know that it's yours, and then be willing to let it go." - Neil Gaiman, "Stardust"0

exactly...texas should not be able to dictate to anyone what should and should not be taught. they take out jefferson but i bet they spend 2 weeks on sam houston, and 3 on the stupid alamo, and throw god in there when talking about the american revolution, because it was god's idea wasn't it???...weren't they talking about seceding from the union again last year??Starfall wrote:It still pisses me off that a single state's bureaucracy that just happens to be dominated by right wing buffoons can dictate to the rest of us what can be taught to our kids.
and those buffoons in texas wonder why they never get any pearl jam shows..."You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

The Gov. here only talks that way when it's election time.

No shit. What are they going to do, rewrite history? Kind of the way gwb rewrote the constitution, or rather ignored the constitution.fuck 'em if they can't take a joke

no offense to you personally in my prior post..."You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

i am not sure what he did to be eliminated. i remember last week a few people on here were saying how great he was...is it because he is on the $2 bill? anyone remember the old saying "queer as a 2 dollar bill"?norm wrote:keeponrockin wrote:Would anybody REALLY miss Texas?

i wonder how texas will explain it when the first kid says "who is that guy on mount rushmore between washington and theodore roosevelt??""You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

let them breakaway and start their own theocracy.
Take florida as well0 -
Sure is funny how Thinkprogress conveniently are spinning this one. They didn't say anything about how the board members on the left wanted the State Board of Education to remove the Chritmas Holliday in a section on culture for 6t graders and add Diwali, a Hindu festival. Also they wanted no mention of any of the founding Farthers, The constitution, The Bill of rights,Capitaliism or free enterprise.
Instead they wanted a more globalist view and wanted to make america look bad.
Id be willing to bet some kind of deal was struck as far as Thomas Jefferson goes.0 -
Amazing how history is re-written.0

Seriously -- why broadbrush everyone in this state with these idiots? It's bad enough I have to live around them without being grouped as one of them. Got it BUFFOON ??!!0 -
sorry, but i could do without texas and the backwards ass thinking of the people in power there that are affecting what my kids might learn in school.. not to mention, this is the state that gave us LBJ and GWB...as far as i'm concerned, they can secede and deal with their problems on their own. i can't be bothered with them...flywallyfly wrote:gimmesometruth27 wrote:

so what is wrong with our kids being more worldly? we can not continue to go generation after generation telling our kids how america is the greatest thing since sliced bread when we clearly have skeletons in our closet that we should not be proud of. you forget that in 25 years white people will be a minority, so why not expose the kids to customs of other countries? what is wrong with a globalist view? god forbid we raise more well rounded kids that are considerate of other people in this world. WE do not own the world, got it?prfctlefts wrote:Sure is funny how Thinkprogress conveniently are spinning this one. I wonder if this is the same Board that I saw a piece on TV about......that plan was to NOT teach any U.S. history prior to 1870....as we all know....nothing important happened before then. :ugeek:All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.0
