What do you think is the heaviest riff in rock? i don't mean best riff; i mean what riff is so heavy that it just makes your body feel like it's full of iron; indestructible to all that comes across its path.
for me it has got to be "sad but true" by metallica. that song just makes me envision a 10,000 man army about to walk into battle with their footsteps and mentality in unison with that of general hammett and assistant general hetfield.
seeing it live with +10,000 fists pounding the air as they simultaneously jump up and down is pretty frickin' heavy too.
so what does everyone else think?

Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
Butthead: Huh huh.

One of the heaviest riff I can clearly remember in front of 55,000 at RFK Stadium in DC at the Monsters of Rock Tour.......has to be Metallica's *Harvester Of Sorrow* and seeing ALL that hair flopping in the wind is unforgettable for me.
Another heavy riff has to be Joe Satriani's *Hordes Of Locusts* I can hear those tiny creatures marching with destruction of the earth's greenery on their minds.

So many nice heavy riffs out there. I like most of the ones mentioned.
I'll have to say I can't think of one right off.
No one has mentioend Mastodon though so I'll throw a couple of theirs out there.
The closeing riff to Siberrian Divide off of Blood Mountin kills me every time.
When The Czar kicks in around the 3:44 mark off of Crack the Skye fucking pure head banging fun.
Love the Melvins the bit too and their song Revolve.Charlotte 00 | Charlotte 03 | Asheville 04 | Atlanta 12 | Greenville 16 | Columbia 16 |Seattle 18 | Nashville 22 | Ohana Festival 24 x2 | Atlanta 25 x20 -

I'll see your Millionaire and raise you 'A Song for the Dead' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USKnKTSpZZA That ending is absolutely insane.
Here's a pretty kickin version of Millionaire from Jools Holland back in 02/03.
