the ceos and record label owners who when rock music began in the 1950's, discriminated against, shortchanged, stole from, lied to, and took advantage of blues musicians and the creators of rock music.


the ceos and record label owners right now, who refuse to walk into the world we all live in, 2010. A world where most, hundreds of millions of people worldwide, would rather torrent an album for free rather than plunking down 20 bucks for another reissued cd. Those who fine, prosecute, and go after criminally, file sharers, in the clinically insane idea that somehow, fining a mother of 4, 1.6 million dollars, for downloading 22 songs illegal, is prudent, wise and makes sense.

the commodification of music in 2010. Some of it is inevitable, musicians arent making money with cd sales anymore, so some have to do, what was 20 years unthinkable, liscence music to commercial interests. However, the American Idol, talent show type crap that passes for legitimate music platforms is beyond profane. Flat out, music, the music I have felt, and loved, and has changed my life, has been music that goes against the grain, is subversive, experimental, boundary pushing, and intelligent. The lie that permeates society, now is that, to become a musician you go on American Idol. Thats sad. I also am aiming this one at the record labels and ceos, who think uping cd prices, and ticket prices, is legitimate buisness practice and is justified. Music to Simon Cowell, or to these ceos, is nothing more than something that can make them money. Music to me, is something that can alter my life. I take music seriously. Its obvious no major, or ceo, or game show judge feels the same way.

The inherent exploitation in a major label contract. Not owning your masters is a flat crime. And the fact most majors tip the balance of power in a contract in favor of the label rather than the artist.

Piggy backing off that previous point, the ceo's, bands, media outlets, radio stations, magazines and such who refuse to acknowledge, most fans dont consume music the same way they did 20 years ago. The action these people seem to take is, basically to do nothing. They think fining enough, jailing enough, or just flat out praying to your god will somehow, make it so, tomorrow, people unplug the modem, and subscribe to Spin or RS, or tune into the local alt rock station.

The consolidation and commodification and commercialization of radio. Most radio station traffic in pushing the same 10 songs ever hour, every day, all day. Few hosts and dj's take chances, and few are doing what radio stations are supposed to do. Gasp...turn people onto new and exciting bands...gasp. If you want to get a taste of the new sound, the new scene, good new music, you aint gonna find it on the radio.

lastly, the dying out of the a and r rep. Picture this: you are 20 years old. Your band just was featured on Pitchfork, and was given a "best new music" rating. Your band starts getting press, and your gigs start selling out. Your band is the new it band. How does a 20 year old deal with that? How do they deal with the pressure of fame, with the drugs, the musicians lifestyle, with the feelings that arise from anyone when they go from being broke, to being the next big thing? Who do you turn to? Who do you talk to? A and R reps, would have been that person. In my mind, every band, when signing to major or indie, should be given free of charge their own personal counselor, or A and R rep, someone they can talk about their feelings to. The fact this isnt common practice is a flat out crime.

Not for me, I bought the albums I liked after downloading them.
It is illegal for artists to rip us off with crap albums after we paid money for them.

i think the whole digital age, itunes/mp3, thing is a huge mistake. i feel that 'albums' are on their death bed. before my girlfriend went to college i basically put my entire music collection on her ipod, hoping should would find some music she would really like, but now i think that was a bad idea.

some stuff needs to be listened to as an album. sit down and just listen to it. i remember in the peel slowly boxset lou reed says something he makes music for people to sit down alone and listen to. but now its more likely people find one or two songs they like and just listen to them and miss the whole picture. if you told someone to check out lou reed's berlin they would download caroline says II and be done with it. but if listen to the whole album, there is an experience in there.

i almost feel sorry for people today that will probably never hear a neil young album or a beatles album, or pearl jam for that matter. even if they are a big fan and know all the songs they may never listen to an actual album....
