    CUTE!
  • This single has done some nice things for Backspacer. After 19 weeks, Backspacer remains in the top 100 at 98, down 2 spots from last week.

I don't think many people on this board would have predicted that this album would have remained in the top 100 after 19 weeks. JB has been a huge success so far...like someone mentioned earlier, it's too bad they didn't have a television appearance to showcase the tune or an announcement of a NA tour. It could really take off...not that it matters but it's nice that after so many years, they are still relevant in the musical landscape.

One thing I've noticed with this song is that a lot of people I know who aren't PJ fans of any level, are buzzing about this song. At least a couple of them have said its the most beautiful song of 2009. And that was without any input from me! Nice to hear anyway.
  • I wonder what would have happened if JB was the first single, and it was the song they played on Conan.....

I don't think that "Just Breathe" has become a "great radio smash". Yes, it's exceeded my prediction that it was going to be yet another second single that didn't go anywhere (like "Life Wasted" or "Light Years"). But it hasn't, as of yet, blown up to a full blown smash. It probably has kept Backspacer from completely falling off the charts, but I don't know if I'd define it as a "sales spike".

Anyways, I'll go ahead and rename the thread ;) The song has not been a flop by any means, but it hasn't been a song that's hurdled Backspacer towards platinum status either.

I never predicted that "Just Breathe" would become a great radio smash. I theorized that it could become a crossover hit-- if it were worked to CHR/Top 40 radio. The fact that it has made it as far as it has with virtually no promotion (that I'm aware of) proves my point (if I do say so myself).

With promotion, the song could be a top ten hit. With a top ten hit, album sales would have a chance of getting to platinum level. As it is, the song's modest success will push the album to gold a lot sooner than it would have otherwise.
I gather speed from you fucking with me.

And let me also add that the Target exclusive has depressed album sales. If "Backspacer" were available at other major retailers, it would have sold at least 10 percent more copies, and I think that's a conservative estimate.

i have still not heard it once anywhere in the Uk

    That is a terrible waste...

i remain convinced if there was a label to ram this song home it would have been a smash.

Still the album has sold well, PJ must have easily made a shit load more coin off this one than advocado because of the terms they negotiated, less promotion costs, higher profits....similar sales....etc

i think they missed the chance to go huge again because of the lack of promotion but really i dont think they will care....seems they are enjoying themselves more than ever.

But i think it shows how effective the huge label promotion can be......and how the street team method doesnt really hold up on a band of this scale

i always post pj quote's and songs on facebook. and when i posted just breathe i got a bunch of "likes" from people that don't ever like pj stuff.
    mainly girls of all ages.
  • I have not heard it on the radio as I barely listen to music stations but I did hear it at my local grocery store the other day. I am glad it is getting out there as it is one of the best songs I have ever heard.

    100% Agreed.

Here's how I know just breathe did it...

I post covers of Pearl Jam songs on youtube occassionally. I posted a not-so-good cover of this tune a day or two after the album was released. It's now been viewed over 20,000 times. On top of that, on youtube, you can look at the demographics of who's viewing your videos. It doubles any other PJ cover I've ever done in the percentage of girls watching it.

Ladies love just breathe. This song will also be a bunch of people's wedding songs.... this tune has staying power because the chicks dig it.
Here's a new demo called "in the fire":

  • Yeah, it is kind of weird phenomenon. I had a guy come up to me at work the other day. He knows I like PJ but he's not really a fan. He listens to WMMR (Philly station) and heard it a bunch of times. He came up to me and told me how much he likes the song, wanted to know about the album, etc. I can recall the last time something like that happened. I think the song has definitely caught the attention of people that would previously not be moved by any new PJ material.

And as far as a wedding song, I really want to play it at my wedding next month. I am leaning towards having it played during the sit-down dinner portion. My fiancee likes it a lot too but I don't think it will be our 'wedding song'.

I have neighbors who used "Just Breathe" as their wedding song in November, and neither is a giant Pearl Jam fan. I have another neighbor who, upon hearing that I was a giant Pearl Jam fan (seriously, I'm nine feet tall) in December, volunteered how much she loved their song "Breathe" when a KROQ DJ who is her friend played it for her.

Anyway, "Last Kiss" and, to a lesser extent, "Just Breathe," are examples of a common phenomenon in popular music: often, the songs for which a band becomes most known are either unrepresentative of the band's broader repertoire, or not songs that the band's biggest fans would single out as their greatest work. The Grateful Dead has had exactly one top 40 single, "Touch Of Grey." I don't think many Deadheads would cite "Touch of Grey" as even among their favorite Dead songs. Springsteen's biggest pop hit was "Dancing In The Dark." Again, I don't think there are a whole lot of Bruce fans citing that one as his masterwork-- it's "Born To Run," "Thunder Road," "Badlands," etc. I could go on-- probably not many hard-core Stones fans who consider "Satisfaction" one of their best songs, not many huge Beatles fans who consider "Hey Jude" their best song.

By your standards, the title of this thread should be, 'No single in the last decade has done it'.

Platinum status would be virtually impossible with an independent release in the day and age of downloading.

They really haven't had a 'full blown smash' since their first 3 albums...and that doesn't really bother me at all. What they have had is some pretty successful singles...especially JB. In my books, it 'did it'.

I've always thought "Force of Nature" would be a hit on the radio. But, then again, I don't have the ear of mainstream radio. It seems the big hits on radio appeal the the lowest common denominator.
  • Everyday in the elevator at work i see Just Breathe on the news screen as top adult cont songs. Usually it was #2.
The past 3 week --- #1 on the chart!
    PJ - 36
    EV - 5

This wasn't an indie release. They used Target to distribute, which doesn't seem indie to me. The Eagles a few years ago released a CD only through Wal-Mart and sold multiple millions of copies.

Independent = not released/distributed by a major record company. In this case, it wasn't released/distributed by any record company. Does Monkeywrench Records have any employees?

it's still doing well in the Triple A and Hot AC charts. But slipping on the rock stations. Well except for the Alternative chart. But I hope they announce something soon. Hoping it gets that extra boost.

It still has a bullet on the most recent editions of Billboard's Rock Songs and Alternative Songs charts. It is #1 with a bullet on the Triple A chart. It still has a bullet on the Hot 100. So, it is actually gaining airplay across all formats. That could change in the charts that get released tomorrow/leaked today.

Target is a retailer, not a distributor. The distributor is the entity that provides the product to Target (and the coalition of record stores that signed on to sell "Backspacer"). "Independent" has a specific meaning in the context of the music industry. An independent record label is one that is not owned or controlled by any of the major media conglomerates. (As Wikipedia puts it, "An independent record label (or indie record label) is a record label operating without the funding of or outside the organizations of the major record labels.") Monkeywrench Records is an independent label; thus, "Backspacer" is an independent release.

The Eagles' "Long Road Out Of Eden" was put out by Lost Highway Records, which is part of the Universal Music Group. It was not an independent release, and the Wal-Mart exclusive has nothing to do with determining whether it was.

"Just Breathe" moves down from #88 to #89 on the Hot 100. Not sure if it keeps its bullet. Chart run: 99-92-88-89.
