It seems just as that song was released and as it has gained momentum Pearl Jam is totally gone.
Now they are doing Europe and it seems highly likely that they are touring NA, and I'm sure once those things start to happen then it will be like they never left.
It's just a part of me wishes they were doing the promotion circuit still. Getting the word out about Backspacer.
(and yes I realize they featured a song on a tv show recently).
I don't know I just don't feel the push for this album is close to what S/T was. And with Just Breathe doing so well I hope they don't miss an opportunity to reach out to more fans.
yup. its a huge mystery to me. especially considering all their interviews last summer talking about wanting to expand their audience a bit
I read they had a big commercial spot on the Grammys, so that is cool. Hopefully some of the 'dopes' that watch the Grammys will cross over.0 -
I think we all know that the My City of Ruins cover, while very nice, will plummet very soon. Just Breathe, on the other hand, has staying power and is moving up the charts.
I think it's a shame the band isn't trying to capitalize on that movement, or at least promoting the song a bit more. Once people hear it, they tend to like it. I really think a good marketing campaign for this song could really push up sales for the single and the album. For instance, it would have been great if Target showcased "Just Breathe" a bit in it's more recent ad for Backspacer on the Grammys.
I still feel like Just Breathe will climb up a bit in February before peaking. If promotion doesn't occur... which it looks like it won't, the one other thing that could push this song to new heights is use in a TV show/movie or a cover on American Idol. Yep, I said it, and honestly, I would not be surprised in the least if the Idol thing happens. If there's a rock-type guy or gal... it would be a smart move. Here's a new demo called "in the fire":

"Just Breathe" moves up from #92 to #88 on the Hot 100. This song will underperform its potential due to a complete lack of promotion.
"My City Of Ruins" debuts at #92 on the Hot 100.I gather speed from you fucking with me.0 -
I gotta say, I didn't think that Just Breathe would be a good single. But the very fact that the song has climbed to #7 on the alternative chart and this thread has grown to 26 pages shows that Just Breathe DID do it....whatever it is "it" is.2000: Camden 1, 2003: Philly, State College, Camden 1, MSG 2, Hershey, 2004: Reading, 2005: Philly, 2006: Camden 1, 2, East Rutherford 1, 2007: Lollapalooza, 2008: Camden 1, Washington D.C., MSG 1, 2, 2009: Philly 1, 2, 3, 4, 2010: Bristol, MSG 2, 2011: PJ20 1, 2, 2012: Made In America, 2013: Brooklyn 2, Philly 2, 2014: Denver, 2015: Global Citizen Festival, 2016: Philly 2, Fenway 1, 2018: Fenway 1, 2, 2021: Sea. I don't think that "Just Breathe" has become a "great radio smash". Yes, it's exceeded my prediction that it was going to be yet another second single that didn't go anywhere (like "Life Wasted" or "Light Years"). But it hasn't, as of yet, blown up to a full blown smash. It probably has kept Backspacer from completely falling off the charts, but I don't know if I'd define it as a "sales spike".
Anyways, I'll go ahead and rename the threadThe song has not been a flop by any means, but it hasn't been a song that's hurdled Backspacer towards platinum status either.

Lets face it, nothing is going to hurl Backspacer to platinum status, those days are over for most rock bands. I think it was the perfect choice for the 2nd single but I can't understand why the hell they haven't gone on any shows to promote it. Have you seen some of the so-called guests on late night tv lately? My best friend works at a casino and texted me asking what's the newer PJ song that's out. Apparently it gets played there all the time, thought that was cool but not surprising. Last night I had switched on 'Pop Hits' on Music Choice and JB had just come on. My 2.5-yr old stopped dead in her tracks, came over and laid down with me and we listened to it. She says 'I like that song!'0

I just posted this in the TV appearance thread, but I thought it fit in this discussion as well.

"There might be a horrifying encounter with a host and stuff. But if you could just play...
If you could play a song...I would like to play on Ellen DeGeneres' show.
Nice, nice. So do it.
I think she's tremendous.
Yeah, she's cool.
But, you know what? I wouldn't do it based on know what her -- what's the word...?
Demographic?
Demographic. It wouldn't be based on that. It would be based on that I think Ellen DeGeneres has done. Tremendous things."
I think if Pearl Jam appeared on this show, and then Ellen advertised the CD at itunes and Target we might see a sales spike.
Basically, I think housewives would swoon over this song.0 -

it's played on the shitty mainstream normal radio morning show thing that my alarm clock wakes me up with at 6am several times a week. when it plays i stay in bed a little longer. to listen.. i mean...0

This single has done some nice things for Backspacer. After 19 weeks, Backspacer remains in the top 100 at 98, down 2 spots from last week.
I don't think many people on this board would have predicted that this album would have remained in the top 100 after 19 weeks. JB has been a huge success so far...like someone mentioned earlier, it's too bad they didn't have a television appearance to showcase the tune or an announcement of a NA tour. It could really take off...not that it matters but it's nice that after so many years, they are still relevant in the musical landscape.0 -
One thing I've noticed with this song is that a lot of people I know who aren't PJ fans of any level, are buzzing about this song. At least a couple of them have said its the most beautiful song of 2009. And that was without any input from me! Nice to hear anyway.0

I wonder what would have happened if JB was the first single, and it was the song they played on Conan.....0

I never predicted that "Just Breathe" would become a great radio smash. I theorized that it could become a crossover hit-- if it were worked to CHR/Top 40 radio. The fact that it has made it as far as it has with virtually no promotion (that I'm aware of) proves my point (if I do say so myself).
With promotion, the song could be a top ten hit. With a top ten hit, album sales would have a chance of getting to platinum level. As it is, the song's modest success will push the album to gold a lot sooner than it would have otherwise.I gather speed from you fucking with me.0 -
And let me also add that the Target exclusive has depressed album sales. If "Backspacer" were available at other major retailers, it would have sold at least 10 percent more copies, and I think that's a conservative estimate.I gather speed from you fucking with me.0

i have still not heard it once anywhere in the Uk
That is a terrible waste...
i remain convinced if there was a label to ram this song home it would have been a smash.
Still the album has sold well, PJ must have easily made a shit load more coin off this one than advocado because of the terms they negotiated, less promotion costs, higher profits....similar sales....etc
i think they missed the chance to go huge again because of the lack of promotion but really i dont think they will care....seems they are enjoying themselves more than ever.
But i think it shows how effective the huge label promotion can be......and how the street team method doesnt really hold up on a band of this scale0 -
here's how i know just breathe did it.
i always post pj quote's and songs on facebook. and when i posted just breathe i got a bunch of "likes" from people that don't ever like pj stuff.
mainly girls of all ages.0
