There's tremendous variations on everyone's top 5, which is quite awesome and interesting.
For me, I'd say Pearl Jam has pretty much been at the top for a long time, but the rest of my top 5 are pretty fluid, depending on my mood. If I want classic rock, The Who, Springsteen, The Beatles, and Jimi Hendrix are the rest of the 5...but if I am in the mood for something more modern Ben Harper, The Roots, Michael Franti & Spearhead, and The Black Keys round out the rest of the 5.
Pearl Jam is by far my favorite band and has been for a very long time!
as for the rest...
The Whigs
Sleater-Kinney
Pete Yorn
Wilco
The Mother Hips (love these guys...they have been around a long time, but not too many people know about them! They're a great live band...I found a link with them playing live! Check them out!)
Pearl jam is #1 the rest in no particular order:
NIN
Metallica
radiohead
