A great loss. He is one of the greatest American historian's ever. I was privileged enough to have him speak to my class when I was in college. He was an unbelievable speaker and storyteller and his words are still fresh in my mind. His contributions and interpretations of history will be remembered and revisited for years to come. RIP.PJ:

Howard Zinn is my hero. What a wonderful man he was. So sad to lose him.0

can you edit your title so it says "has died" or something, so people don't gloss over this rather significant event?
i watched "you can't be neutral..." not too long ago and found him incredibly fascinating. it's no wonder the band members took a liking to him and his approach.
It's not the best, but if you're not really familiar with him you could do worse than to watch it.

we have lost a true american hero today.
this is very sad news indeed

I tried to explain. Oh, somehow.0 -
"A People's History of the United States" is one of the most important history books ever written, in my opinion. I believe it's one of the main reasons we are starting to come out of the period of our history where a selective past is being taught in our public schools. I recently read that Columbus Day is now really downplayed as well, which is great. I went through school thinking that guy was a hero! What a joke!
People always say that history is written by the winners, but Howard Zinn showed that it doesn't have to be. He has offered the people at large a chance at the truth, and for that we are all winners.
Thank you for your courage and your life, Mr. Zinn.Apr 07, 1994/Oct 01, 1996/Jul 07, 1998/Jul 08, 1998/Aug 29, 1998/Aug 31, 1998/Sep 01, 1998/Sep 03, 1998/Sep 04, 1998/Sep 06, 1998/Jun 01, 2000/Jun 04, 2000/Jun 06, 2000/Oct 20, 2000/Oct 21, 2000/Oct 22, 2000/Oct 24, 2000/Oct 25, 2000/Oct 20, 2001/Oct 21, 2001/May 30, 2003/Jun 01, 2003/Jun 02, 2003/Jun 28, 2003/Jul 02, 2003/Oct 25, 2003/Jul 15, 2006/Jul 16, 2006/Jul 18, 2006/Jul 20, 2006/Jul 22, 2006/Jul 23, 2006/Sep 21, 2009/Sep 22, 2009/Sep 26, 2009/Sep 25, 20110 -
Howard Zinn, Radical Historian
Howard Zinn, historian and author of A People's History of the United States, has died of a heart attack. He was 87.
Zinn was born in New York and worked in the Brooklyn Navy Yards and served as a bombardier in World War II. He attended school on the GI bill, was active in the civil rights movement, and protested Vietnam.
On his last day at BU, Dr. Zinn ended class 30 minutes early so he could join a picket line and urged the 500 students attending his lecture to come along. A hundred did so.
A People's History should be required reading for every high school student in the nation. Zinn is survived by his daughter, his son, and five grandchildren.

We have lost a great American! I just watched this inightful speech at BU on Nov 11 and was again amazed at his intellect- http://www.democracynow.org/blog/2010/1 ... _holy_wars
When 911 occurred, I was overwhelmed with bewilderment. It was Zinn's work that helped me understand this event and inspired me to approach life differently.
May his inspiration and good work live on!!!0 -
