"Just Breathe" DID IT

  • I didn't even realize Just Breathe was released as a single. I haven't heard it once on any radio station in Boston. Still hear the Fixer quite a bit though.

Personally, I don't think Just Breathe is a good song. The strumming, bass and vocals are great up until "Did I say that I need you??" I don't know why, but I hate that line and the way it's delivered...it's very un-Pearl Jam to me. And I love their slower songs like Man of the Hour, Parachutes, Come Back, etc. Just Breathe just isn't a song I like.

I honestly think most songs on the album could be singles, except for Just Breathe, The End, and Johnny Guitar. Everything else, definitely single worthy. Gonna See My Friend and Supersonic, to me, are the best rock songs they've had in a while, better than any rocker from their last album. Unthought Known and Speed of Sound are my favorites. Fresh sounds from the band.

I heard it over the speakers while eating a 12" BMT at Subway yesterday...it made my sandwich a little bit more delicious.

    Just Breathe = awesome

    that's all that matters.

Agreed. Fuck commercial radio....and yeah, seeing them in theaters would be a dream come true.

    I agree.

    - F**k Commercial Radio, F**k KROQ
    - Yes, Force Of Nature would have been a Great 2nd Single
    - No, I'm never getting married, but I would Definitely pick a Pearl Jam song
    - and even if BACKSPACER doesn't go Gold, I'm still gonna support Pearl Jam no matter what!!!!

  • if there are two songs on the album that are NOT meant for radio it would be "just breathe" and "the end". to fans they may be great songs, but for the masses? not a chance. they aren't epic heart-breakers like "black". they aren't sing alongs like "elderly woman". they aren't even a "daughter".

just a poor choice of singles if you ask me. if they were dying to get this one out there it should have been the fourth single after "amongst the waves" and "got some". no one wants some plodding pseudo-neil young wanna be song.

Totally agreed. It's comparable to like putting out Sleight of Hand as a single.

    It's a beautiful song.

I think it must be hard to predict what non-fans will grab onto. *shrugs*

    NO WAY!

Sleight of Hand is very experimental. It took me a dozen listens to get. A much more complex and VERY mellow song.

Just Breathe is a really simple song and has a hook. I didn't like what I heard from the clips, but was surprised to find myself really liking it after only a few listens.

Couldn't give a shit about ratings.

Just Breathe is one of PJ's best tunes of late and is far superior to "The Fixer".
If idiot America can't realize that, then that's THEIR problem and fuck 'em!

Just Breathe will hit as soon as it plays on Grey's Anatomy or something like that.

Just Breathe is still climbing on the rock charts. But we never know what's going to be a hit single. I hear songs on other people's albums. And think this should be a hit. But it's not even played here. I think every song on Backspacer has a potential to be a hit. I see Just Breathe, Amongst the Waves and Unthought Known as crossover hits. But it's up to the radio programmers to play them. And I love Force of Nature. But I don't know how well it would do. I think listeners would not know what to do with it.

  • Personally I think that The End, Just Breathe and Come Back "try to hard". When "Did I say that..." comes in with the orchestra I cringe. I love their mellow songs like Lowlight, of the girl, sleight of hand, all or none etc but on Avocado and Backspacer the lyrics are cheesy in its straightforward-ness and as stated, they try to hard to be emotional.

Listening tio Backspacer I don't see any song being a hit. I think that Got Some, Supersonic and Gonne See my Friends are catchy music-wise but I think the general audience have a problem with Eddies voice on the tracks. I think the voice sounds to worn out and out-of-breath (alot better than on Avocado though) for the general audience, if the Kings of Leon singer or Coldplay singer would have sung on those rockers they would have exploded.

I love Eddie and his voice. But on the two latest albums, everyone I know who are not into the band gets tired of how he's using it. But I guess I'm the only one thinking that eddies voice is a factor in why Got Some or any other song hasn't exploded on the charts :)

    this.

have they released Johhny guitar? I think that would be a hit.

I don't think he's trying to hard at all, I think the emotion is genuine. to each, his own

I think you will be largely on your own with this. Just breathe is a terrific song and the vocal delivery makes the song what it is, and unthought known is stunning, of course there is a great deal of bias on my part when i hear PJ but those people I have recommended Backspacer to have all raved about it after hearing it, usually saying things like 'I never knew Pj could make such great music'....wow , do all their albums sound like this etc...

Vedders voice is the key quite often too, although i do agree with your thoughts on the chris martin thing - not that hes got a good voice, but because the general music buying casual punter likes his voice.

although i think its hard to suggest Eddie is trying too hard to sound emotional in a tune that he wrote about the loss of someone who is perceived to have been one of his very closest friends. I'm sure if you asked Eddie about that he wouldnt confirm that yeah I was trying to sound emotional there as I wasnt really touched at all

Lets get our facts straight people....

    - Just Breathe was the most added song last week at Alternative AND Triple A Radio
    - Just Breathe had the most increase in plays last week at Alternative Radio
    - Just Breathe is #11 on Triple A Radio (this is the beginning of the mainstream crossover)
    - Just Breathe has sold more iTunes Singles than The Fixer (check the iTunes Store for proof)
    - Just Breathe will be a bigger hit than the Fixer and will be a huge overall hit
  • who even listens to the regular radio?

and i dont think those chart #s have anything to do with satellite

considering almost every PJ show is sold out and then some, thats what i look at
  • It actually was one of the greatest gainers in airplay on Billboard rock charts, only went down 1 spot as some other songs must have added more spins. Either way, air play is going up. It took KROQ playing it 4 weeks before it became the #1 requested song, now for 3 weeks straight. It will hang around, and it will lead to stations actually playing "Unthought Known" when it's released instead of ignoring PJ 3rd singles.
  • If they really wanted commercial radio success right out of the gate they would have released 'Got Some' as their first single....an obvious choice.....hype was built by playing it on Conan, it was the world's first taste of the new material(officially, at least) and it had me pumped, to say the very least....

remember, these guys are all doing just fine financially....they do what they want...it must be a good feeling.... ;)
