the wolf wrote:first off, im not a sheep. i happen to really like the song. it was the first thing that really grabbed me off of Riot Act.
then again, i have a pretty broad range of musical tastes. and i like different cultures music. while i agree its not for everyone,
knowing the meaning behind the song, i would hope, would keep remarks like his to a min.
anyway, you can go on with you vast knowledge of "EVERyTHING" if you would like.
good day.
good day? ha! i'm not done with you yetlol
all i'm doing is trying to defend the original poster of this thread who had a very legitimate personal opinion about a song and who also had a valid question about the song...and then people come on here bashing this person...who, quite obviously, didn't know the background story behind the song
when i said i "know everything about everything" i was being very sarcastic, but, um, well...wudeva!
when i first spun riot act the song i liked the least was help help, followed by arc.
help help is a bad song, regardless of the meaning of it. there, i said it0 -

how can a song without words be about something in particular?
i have always struggled with this...and i'm not talking about arc here...rather instrumental jazz...i could never grasp the concept that a song could have a meaning/story without actually having words in the song...weird shit.
some people need words to have them believe it's a song.0 -

Bayleaf is fucking a gem. Stone sings great. His backgrounds remind me of the kings ray davies.
Girl should have been on ten, it really should have been a double album. Some people have religion I have Pearl Jam.

if i dont really know who MLK was, and what he was about, then say, go to a black history message board, and say "why the hell does everyone like this guy so much, so he made a few good speeches, big deal. he wasnt even a real Rev. "
if i did that i would take my beating , as it would be deserved.
i know you were being sarcastic. so was i. its all good.

So the only way to express feelings and emotions is through words? You must be a very left-brained individual (not that there's anything wrong with that).
In your mind, I suppose Van Gogh was just a dude with one ear who painted pictures of flowers. Since, you know, none of his paintings had words.
Emotions/feelings/sentiments can be expressed in a variety of ways. Arc expresses a grief that is too big for words, which is why there aren't any.everybody wants the most they can possibly get

pulaski wrote:how can i 'trash' a song thats not a song. all im saying is, if it didnt exist, or if it was never played again, or never mentioned again, i wouldnt lose any sleep over it. to me its album filler, same goes for bugs and all those other cutting room floor songs. Putting that on an album is about the same as letting stone sing a song on an album.
It might not be a song, but it's music, incredibly meaningful music.0 -

I can't tell if this is a joke or not. He famously cut one off to send to a lover, probably because of the syphilis.

true. i think i saw it 3 times in '03, and it is utterly amazing live. waaaaayyyy more emotional and powerful in the live setting, plus its totally extended, and eventually just turns to chaos with all the looping...fantastic!6/26/98, 8/17/00, 10/8/00, 12/8/02, 12/9/02, 4/25/03, 5/28/03, 6/1/03, 6/3/03, 6/5/03, 6/6/03, 6/12/03, 6/13/03, 6/15/03, 6/18/03, 6/21/03, 6/22/03, 7/12/03, 7/14/03, 10/3/04, 10/5/04, 9/9/05, 9/11/05, 9/16/05, 5/16/06, 5/17/06, 5/19/06, 6/30/06, 7/23/06, 8/5/07, 6/30/08, 8/23/09, 8/24/09, 5/4/10, 5/7/10, 9/3/11, 9/4/11, 10/11/13, 10/17/14, 8/20/160 -

who said anything about "every" and "ever"
classical music compositions are songs but what i find hard to understand is how each song is about a certain particular thing, according to the composer of the song. so in the same line of thought, when you hear an instrumental song do you know what its definitely about? i don't.0 -

im not saying the only way to express feelings/emotions is through words...rather just that i have a difficult time understanding the TRUE meaning of a song without any words in it.
who knew arc was about Copenhagen?...when you heard it for the first time did you automatically say "oh, thats about Copehagen"? i didn't.
personally speaking i have a hard time knowing what a song is about without any words. sure it's still a song, but not necessarily everyone thinks the same way as me.
keep in mind some classical songs/instrumentals are actually about actual specific things...not just merely aboutconveying general emotions/feelings.0 -
jesus christ people, back off.
just because a "song" has meaning for someone, doesn't mean everyone else has to like it. I also don't like Arc and don't think it's a song. I can't stand listening to it, but I respect the meaning it might have for Ed (or whoever), although I'm not going to fall all over it. I hear people talk about how Come Back has so much meaning for them...I simply cannot stand that song. I personally love Footsteps and it has meaning to me, but I am not going to bitch someone out for "not understanding the meaning" or throw them overboard because they disagree.
I think the original poster has the right to post that he thinks it sucks JUST as much as you people have to give your opinions against it. But don't go making him look like a bad guy or insensitive because he doesn't know why the non-song was written or what.
sometimes people can be so mean. maybe he just didn't know.Need a tour Travel Agent??? Pick me :-)

You have the right to hold the opinion that Arc sucks. But you don't have the right to hold the opinion that it is not a song, because that's not an opinion. That's a narrow-minded stupid as fuck thought process that has no reason to ever be verbalized or in this case typed out. Arc is a song. That's a fact.Yield!
