Okay so i got the cd yesterday, listened to it and wtf it sucks. I was expecting fat grooves and riffs like a Kyuss + Zeppelin type thing but its just the same sucky weird qotsa type shit, everything just sounds really boring and samey. Josh's voice is really lame and the music, well, nothing special about it all.
Seeing them on the 18th of Dec though..

Here are some reviews to help other forum users relate (or not) to the Them Crooked Vultures debut:

Well, you can colour me slightly disappointed as well. The only part of this group who I've never been a fan of is Homme / QOTSA, whereas I'm a massive fan of both Grohl and JPJ... so I find it pretty annoying that the TCV sound is so heavily QOTSA influenced. The album is ok, it's a decent rock album, but I sit here wondering what could have been. If someone had handed me this last year and said it's the new QOTSA album, I wouldn't have batted an eyelid.0

Josh seems to be a polarizing figure. hmm. even my girlfriend hates queens of the stone age. she respects what josh does but would never play his music willingly.
i happen to love the guy and his style. for me, it doesn't get any better than him jamming with grohl and JPJ. it's a badass record :twisted:0 -
I beg to know if people love QOTSA and TCV whether they have listened to Kyuss' Blues for the Red Sun or Welcome To Sky Valley...0

Seems a bit silly to purchase an album before you even listen to it, considering Them Crooked Vultures uploaded the entire album to youtube. I listened to the whole thing and loved every song.
I really can't listen to anyone who complains the entire album sounds the same. It doesn't. Unless you're familiar with the intricacies of John Paul Jones and David Grohl, it's easy to think that everything sounds like it's influenced by Josh Homme. There's definitely some Zeppelin and Foo Fighters to be heard in the songs. I swear the opening riff to Elephants even sounds like something by The Black Crowes, which John Paul Jones never participated with, but Jimmy Page did and I'm sure the two talked while Page played with them.
If you have your mind made up, then you have your mind made up, but you're doing yourself a disservice by filing this band away as a Homme knockoff band. Say what you will about The Eagles of Death Metal, but Them Crooked Vultures are dynamite.
If anyone is interested, this link will bring you to youtube where every song off of the album is posted.

If you've made up your mind, good for you -- given that you know and "speak the truth" (to use your words), let us common folk figure out our version of the truth ourselves. Peace (and out).0 -
not going to say im disappointed in the whole thing yet, but what I have heard has not been impressing me, considering the talent pool in the band is massive.Van '98, Sea I+II '00, Sea '01, Sea II '02, Van '03, Gorge, Van, Cal, Edm '05, Bos I+II, Phi I+II, DC, SF II+III, Port, Gorge I+II '06, DC, NY I+II '08, Sea I+II, Van, Ridge , LA III+IV' 09, Indy '10, Cal, Van '11, Lond, Van, Sea '13, Memphis '14, RRHOF '17, Sea I+II '18, Van I+II, Vegas I+II, Sea I+II '240

Just heard half the songs on youtube. the production on this album is great for mainstream rock. There's no use of over compression, the instrument's recording sounds like it took place in a live room and there's also spacial relations going on that are absent from mainstream rock.
The songs though....it sounds like another QOTSA album. Sounds like 3 rock superstars coming together and having a good time, nothing ground breaking. Didn't hear anything from that album that I would want to purchase and voluntarily play for repeat listens.
that being said, the album's going to be huge with a mainstream audience.0 -

That's what I'm saying...I'd definitely check an album out that I wasn't sure I'm going to love (e.g. anything from Pearl Jam, The Black Crowes, Beck, just to name a few)7/2/06 - Denver, CO

1) I can't believe anyone would rag on someone for going and buying a cd.
2) he's obviously a fan of Kyuss and Zep, so to me that's not "blindly" buying a disc.
3) the man has a right to his opinion.

agreed, I do blind buys all the time. In fact, come to think of it, I don't think I've ever listened to an album in full before I bought it.0 -

I'm not "ragging" on him for buying a CD. I'm saying that they posted every song on the album on youtube, so why not give the tracks a spin? I don't buy a car without test driving it.
Sure, he can have his opinion, so why can't I have mine? It seems like kind of an oxymoronic defense if you want to shut down my opinion by saying he can have his.Brisk. wrote:Seeing them on the 18th of Dec though..
Well that seems to be the kicker. Sell your tickets dude! http://www.stubhub.com! If you didn't like what you heard on the album, you'll probably hate the concert!
Look, last thing I want to do is get in an argument on an online forum with people I don't know, so this will probably be my last post on this topic. The point I'd like to make is, you knew Homme was in the band, so of course their songs were at least going to sound a little like QOTSA. Grohl was a member of QOTSA for Songs for the Deaf, I believe, so he clearly loves the QOTSA sound. I just get the feeling if Grohl were singing and Homme was playing drums (He drums for The Eagles of Death Metal) all of the same people would be saying, "I was expecting some kind of extraordinary collaboration but it just sounds like the same crappy Foo Fighters sound."
And that's all I have to say about that.
Peace to all and best of luck always. If hope can grow from dirt like me ...0 -
i gotta say as much as i like the album now i dont think itll have much longevity... i was really hoping for more... just talking to my friends about it actually... the layering is thick and heavy and all that good shit but theres never really a moment where any of them shine individually... where is jones on these tracks?? definitely a fair critique... bandoliers and gunman are pretty solid but the rest blends a bit... moments where josh sounds a bit like bowie so thats a plus IMO... and im a big QOTSA fan so its hard to judge
guess i havent quite made up my mind yet... i think itll be a good live show... a fair starting point if they keep making stuff... their individual skills will come out more with time... anyway - a step in the right direction i guess is what im saying... room for improvement0
